17.01.2022 Wearing a face mask provides an additional physical barrier, and helps to slow the spread of COVID-19. . How to put a mask on: 1 Wash and dry (or sanitis...e) your hands. 2 Take your clean, unused mask by the ear loops or strings. 3 Put them over your ears or tie them behind your head. 4 Make sure your mask is completely covering your nose, mouth and chin. . Don’t touch or adjust the front of your mask while wearing it it’s the part that’s protecting you from COVID-19. If you do touch it by accident, wash or sanitise your hands right away. . How to take a mask off: 1 Wash and dry (or sanitise) your hands. 2 Do not touch the front of your mask while removing it. Use only the ear loops or strings. 3 Store cloth face masks in a plastic bag until you have an opportunity to wash them. When disposing single-use surgical face masks, place in a bag or lined bin. Do not put masks into the recycling bin. 4 Wash and dry (or sanitise) your hands. . To learn more about face masks: www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/COVIDmasks

11.01.2022 Nice little post here about the current research around when different sounds develop as kids learn to talk... now we just need a little catchy rhyme to help us remember which sounds are in the 13, 7 and 4. Any ideas?

08.01.2022 So you put out an array of three or four delicious options at mealtime and what does your baby/toddler do? Reach for endless amounts of fruit and throws everyth...ing else. Frustrating? Heck yes. End of the world? Nope. Not even in the slightest. Will you tag a mama/papa who is struggling with this? . Although you may worry that fruit has too much sugar, or your child is a fiend for all things sweet, let's put things into perspective: . Take a deep breath. Fruit is super healthy and full of many of the same vitamins and nutrients that veggies have! Yes there is sugar, but I promise that sugar from fruit is not the cause of obesity in our society :) Unless it's causing your child to have diarrhea, there's no need to worry about "too much" fruit. . That being said - THINK VARIETY! You get control here as the parent and can totally choose not to serve fruit every meal! If you're concerned they're not branching out to try other food, limit how often you offer it to once or twice a day. . When you do offer it, don't restrict! If you choose to serve it and put it out on the dinner table, then be prepared to be totally ok with your child eating as much as they want (this goes for all types of food for that matter). Trying to alter how much of something they should eat is an intuitive eating and picky eating disaster in the making. . Take advantage of the situation! You can use fruit as a bridge to expanding their diet. Smash fruit on a type of bread or cracker they're not keen on. Put it in oatmeal or yogurt if they don't fancy it. Serve it alongside meat on a kid safe skewer to make the meat more appealing. You get the point. . What fruit is your child obsessed with?? 07.01.2022 First Then Visuals A first then visual helps to show a sequence of events of activities that will take place. Visuals are put on a board to show the order of ...the activities that will occur. These can be used with any pictures and be presented in paper or digitally (e.g. iPad app). A first then visual can be a helpful tool to support children through transitioning between activities or events. It can be used to give clear expectations and to prepare the child for what is going to happen next in a visual way rather than only relying on verbal instructions. Some examples of when to use a first à then visual can include: Dressing: First socks on then shoes on Bedtime routine: First bath then bed Moving to a preferred activity: First shower then TV Packing away: First play then pack away

07.01.2022 Research done by Anna Sosa (2015) at Northern Arizona University found that the type of toy used during play is associated with the amount of parent-baby commun...icative interaction. The study looked at the number of adult words, child vocalizations, conversational turns, parent verbal responses to child utterances, and content-specific words spoken by parents during a 15-minute play period with their baby (age 10-16 months) and found this: During play with battery-operated, button-pushing toys (baby laptop, talking farm, and baby cell phone), there were fewer adult words, fewer conversational turns, fewer parent responses, and fewer productions of content-specific words than play with traditional toys (puzzle, shape sorter, and blocks) or books. Conclusion of the study: To promote language development, non-electronic toys are best. While all the bells and whistles of electronic toys may command the young child’s attention, they detract from what matters most: parent-child verbal interactions. Sosa, A. (2015). 03.01.2022 A reminder about those little hearing aid batteries. They are very dangerous if swallowed. Always keep batteries in a safe place, up and away from children who... could swallow them. If you think someone has swallowed a battery, call the Poisons Information Centre on 13 11 26 and they will tell you where to go for help. Do not let the person eat or drink until they have been seen at the clinic or hospital. Do not make the person vomit. Put dead batteries in a bin that children can’t reach.
