24.01.2022 Does your brand have a personality? A vibe? A feel? Or is it just your average business that doesn't really stand out from the competition for any noticeable reason? I know when I'm looking for products or services, I'm WAY more inclined to shop with brands who make me feel EXCITED at the prospect of working with them! Who make me laugh. Who make me feel connected.... Brands who have fun with their copy absolutely nail it in the making-me-a-customer stakes. Who Gives A Crap are a prime example of a brand who shows their personality through their copy and, as a result, have me as a very loyal customer who has no intention of ever buying any other brand of toilet paper ever! Another one is Go-To Skin Care. Their copy is playful, down-to-earth, and SO relatable! And I love how they break the rules and make up words if they feel like it. Totally on board for that. If your copy lacks personality, you're missing out on forming a strong connection with your target audience in a BIG way. Uh-oh... that's not good! Not sure how to inject some personality into your copy? Or worried about taking it too far? Or not far enough?! Hit me up - I'm happy to help! Do you fangirl over brands with personality-popping copy too? Which ones have scored your loyal heart with their winning personalities? #YouHeardWrite

23.01.2022 Here's cheers to me finishing my uni degree!!! This week I handed in my last two assignments for my last two subjects and MAH GAD does it feel GREAT!!!... For the last 8ish years I've been plugging away at a Bachelor of Arts (Professional Writing and Publishing) through Curtin University via Open Universities Australia (It's a brilliant way to study and I highly recommend it) Although I was already well ensconced in the world of writing and communications, I just really wanted a degree. It's kind of like when you're full after dinner, and you know you don't need it, but you *really* want that dessert! It had been a thing in my head for years (throughout my 20s), but I kept talking myself out of it with a variety of excuses and reasons (many of which were based on logic - refer to my last post!). When I moved back to Adelaide around eight years ago though, I decided I was going to stop thinking about it and just bloody well do it! So do it I did! And now, eight years later, here I am - ready to fly to Perth and graduate in February with a fabulous hat and flowing gown and everything! (for the borders being open!) So, if you need me, I'll be over here doing WHATEVER THE HECK I WANT because I don't have any lectures, assignments, or discussion boards to worry about! Huzzah! #YouHeardWrite Visual description: Sarah's wearing a long, flowing orange dress with sunnies on her head, and is holding a glass of rose. Her face says she's quite excited about drinking said rose! She's sitting inside at Down The Rabbit Hole's cellar door, on a white wooden bench with orange, pink, and yellow cushions behind her.

21.01.2022 For anyone who needs or wants reminding every now and then, as I do: 1. Only say yes to things you’re willing to do joyfully. 2. Stop trying to be liked by everybody. You don’t even like everybody. ... 3. The most important relationship you’ll ever be in is the one you’re in with yourself. 4. Be a good person, but don’t waste time trying to prove it. 5. Be yourself today. You look beautiful like that. #YouHeardWrite Visual description: Sarah's sitting at a wooden table with her chin resting on her right hand. Her left hand is resting on the table in front of her. She's smiling softly and wearing a white shirt with black hyphen-like dashes all over it. Behind her is a gorgeous white brick wall with a 70's-style red, orange, and yellow design on it. See more

07.01.2022 Let's talk narrative perspectives, i.e. using 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-person perspective in your copy. First up - what does 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-person even mean? ... 1st person = writing as if YOU are talking. You'll use 1st-person pronouns like 'I', 'we', 'us', 'our', and 'ourselves'. *example* Owls are majestic creatures and I love spending time with them - it's a real hoot! 2nd person = you're talking directly to the reader. You'll use 2nd-person pronouns like 'you', 'your', and 'yourself'. *example* You're never more hootiful than when you have an owl on your arm. 3rd person = you're talking about someone (or something) else who is neither you nor the reader. You'll use 3rd-person pronouns like 'they', 'their', 'he', 'she', 'its', or you'll use a subject's name. *example* Studies show owls are fond of The Beatles; the song, "Love is owl you need" is a particular favourite of theirs. Choosing the best narrative perspective for your copy can make a huge difference to how(l) effective it is. Consider this sentence, written in each of the three perspectives: I will love the pair of earrings I bought just for me. You will love the pair of earrings you bought just for you. They will love the pair of earrings they bought just for themselves. When you read each one, do they - even subtly - make you feel a little different? How do they make you feel? And, on a site selling earrings, which one would make you feel more like buying a pair? (In a future post I’ll talk about which narrative perspectives to use for what) #YouHeardWrite

04.01.2022 Working with an absolute gun of a proofreader makes me feel like I'm shimmying through life like this. But, I'm a copywriter aren't I? Shouldn't I be a pro at proofreading? Well, yes. I'm pretty darn good at proofreading. But, I'm also human, and we humans - once we've looked at something a few times - we stop seeing what's right in front of us. Our brain does this thing where it fills in the gaps and shows us what we think we should see. And that's when small typos have the ...opportunity to sneak in and ruin everything! They slip under our radars, even though we know better - chumps. This is exactly why I employ a proofreader as a value-add to my copywriting services - to make sure we catch any pesky typos you and I don't see during the draft and revision process. So, when you work with me, you also get to work with Di. Di is fabulous. She's been in the word business for over 30 years and has an impeccable reputation. She's super-fast, loves cats, and has experience in everything from Greek marble to Australian comedy (so chances are she's going to know a bit about what you do too). Once you've signed off on your final copy, I send that copy through to Di for her to run her eyes over. Once she's worked her magic, your final, smile-inducing copy is all yours to use, safe in the knowledge it's 100% error-free and ready to shine! Doesn't that sound shimmy-worthy? #YouHeardWrite
