21.01.2022 Why are children more prone to middle ear infections? In children the Eustachian tubes are smaller, narrower and more horizontal compared with adults. Consequently, a build up of fluid in the middle ear, for any reason, is less likely to drain away. If a child has a cold or other respiratory illness, the Eustachian tubes may themselves become swollen and blocked due to mucosal accumulation thus preventing any middle ear fluid from draining. As childrens immune system is stil...l developing, they are less likely to be able to fight the viral infection. Further more, the adenoids, which are part of the immune system can sometimes trap bacteria passing through the nose and mouth which can result in a chronic infection that can pass on to the Eustachian tubes and consequently the middle ear. If there is effusion in the middle ear (fluid behind the ear drum), than this acts as an ideal medium for bacteria to multiply, thus causing a middle ear infection or Acute Otitis Media. If there is Chronic Otitis Media ( when fluid remains in the middle ear for a long time or returns over and over again, even though there is no infection). Your ENT may recommend grommet insertion. Children with grommets must keep their ears dry, so for swimming or bathing it is recommended that you protect the ears from external fluid with an external barrier. 14.01.2022 Health professionals are warning that the steady onslaught of loud noise, particularly through the ear buds of smart phones is damaging the hearing of a new generation of children whom are wired for sound, the trouble is they and their parents are unlikely to find out until they are in their 20s or later. Earlier this year the World Health Organization(WHO) warned that 1.1 billion young people are at risk of hearing loss because of personal audio devices, and rock festivals ...where sound levels can exceed 120 decibels. Such levels in industry are not permitted with out specialist hearing protection and limited time of exposure levels. Current thinking by health professionals is that teenager hearing loss is about 25-30 percent higher than it was 30 years ago. Why? The reason for this increase is the dramatic rise in use of ear buds with smartphones that can increase the sound level reaching the Tympanic membrane by up to 9dbSPL when compared with standard headphones because the sound has less distance to travel, and greater digital clarity at high volume levels. Audiologists recognise that sound levels at and above 85dbSPL can cause permanent hearing loss and that level is easy to achieve with any smartphone ear bud. Experts say the best way to protect young ears is to apply the "60/60" rule: Keep the volume on the smartphone under 60 percent and only listen for a maximum of 60 minutes a day. When listening to smartphones in a noisy place like a bus, train or airplane, the tendency is the turn the volume up, so use headphones that cover up outside noise and they have the added bonus of preventing music leakage...in other words, people around you dont have to listen to your music. For small children at loud sporting events, music concerts or riding on the train/airplane, buy ear protection. If your a musician, only use over the ear headphones or customised in ear monitors that protect your hearing, dont use ear buds..ever.

Because babies are more interested in the unexpected sound, which could be any frequency. In other words babies are listening in broadband. The development of the ability to differentiate, directionalise and focus on a narrower band of frequencies occurs later in infancy and developes rapidly. when brain speech centres become activated. However in some children this process of sound differentiation does not develope appropriately and the child may suffer from Cognitive Auditory Processing Disorder. CAPD is often innitialy treated as ADHD, because the social and cognitive impacts can be similar.

" Of course you can, the power of the human brain is phenomenal, and so is the power of the Auditory Cortex (AC) of the human brain. When your cochlea sends auditory information to your brain (right ear to Left AC, left ear to Right AC), the AC focusses on the primary source of language information, high frequency language cues. These high frequency language cues are the consonants of speech, in most words this is the first few and last letters. The vowel sounds (the middle of most words) need not be completely heard for a person to understand what is being said as the AC can fill in the gaps, especially if the context of the conversation is known. So what happens if you have a hearing loss. Almost all industrial related and age related hearing impairment is located in the higher frequencies of the audible range (from 2000 Hz onwards). If you look at the below photo, most of the consonants of speech are located in this range, thus people with "high frequency hearing loss" are not hearing the first and last letters of each word thus they struggle to understand speech. In quite situations such individuals can compensate for this by maximising all available visual and speech cues, however, put them in a noisy room and suddenly they can no longer hear the consonants of speech. This is because the information contained in high frequency speech cues do not travel very far, and are easily smeared, wiped away by any other background noise. The background noise doesnt have to be much, a few people speaking, the TV on, or radio is all that is required to hinder speech understanding for a person with a high frequency hearing loss.
