03.01.2022 Meet Emily and Ginger from Hearing SA, a service that visits Hutt St Centre each quarter. Last week they came in to test the hearing of a few of our clients, in...cluding an older man known as Bob*. Bob has had trouble with his hearing for around 20 years. He finds he struggles the most in group situations or when there’s background noise. His concerns about the potential cost of having his hearing tested then doing something about it - meant the constant struggle to hear had become something he had learned to live with. I live in a boarding house and am on a fixed income, so I was worried about the cost, but when they told me I could come in for a free test I thought I might as well, said Bob. Bob’s audiogram results found that he should be wearing a hearing aid in each of his ears. Ginger and Emily gave him a referral to get them, then calmed his fears about the cost by telling him about a Government scheme that means pensioners like him are now eligible for free hearing aids. They then accompanied him over to Can Do to make an appointment. It’s really rewarding to find solutions for people like Bob who have had problems with their hearing for such a long time, said Ginger. There can be a lack of understanding about affordable healthcare options and we want people to know that we’re here to help. We want to help rebuild people’s confidence in healthcare.
