25.01.2022 It was so nice to finally catch up and have a volunteer committee meeting tonight. Due to Covid-19 we havent met since March. Therese showed us the lovely Aboriginal print material she has seen on puppets Sam and Lucy and we welcomed new member Trish Henry. Helen, Amy and Jason attended via zoom. Stay tuned for an online auction later in the year we will be organising to raise money and spread the word about hearing loss prevention.

25.01.2022 Hi, Its Amy Barling the Hear our Heart Ear Bus media and sponsorship officer. I’m just touching base to make you aware of the importance of keeping your children’s ears dry while swimming if they have had ear health issues (ear canal sensitivity, perforations) or had grommet surgery. Especially now the hot weather has hit us! By keeping them dry, you are preventing possible infection. The bacteria that lives in (including swimming pool water with leaves/debris) can get into ...the middle ear, which may cause nasty infections. You can buy swimming ear plugs from the chemist. There are a few choices, but they can be quite costly. Another way which is a lot cheaper, and easily accessible is to use blue tack as the ear plug. Here is a lovely little video I found on YouTube that demonstrates how to use the blue tack. https://www.youtube.com/watch (Please note we do not have any affiliation with Dr Clancy, ENT Surgeon). 24.01.2022 Hands on learning a success for our Audiologist Hope! Last week Dr Ridha saw some of our children with our volunteer Directors Rachel and Donna through their Department of Education Ear Specialist program. This ‘Schools Day’ program is a supported appointment with Dr Ridha and healthy ears education / support provided before and after the child’s appointment. For our Hope this was a perfect opportunity to see the end results of her hard work and a great way to learn more fr...om the best in the west- Dr Hayder Ridha. We had HoH children from Orana Heights, Dubbo West Public and West Preschool in Baird Drive, Dubbo Aboriginal Medical Service, Dubbo Public and Dubbo Christian School. A big shout out to Dr Ridha’s lovely office staff who always go out of their way to accommodate our needs. Thank you also to Dr Ridha’s Registrar Dr Joe Jabbour who is now a big fan of our work. Please share with you friends. See more

19.01.2022 Hello Its Virginia, Media Officer with HoH Ear Bus here, I caught up with Rex Ridley from the Dubbo Motorcyclist & Drivers Club Inc. this week, as they had a very generous donation for the Hear our Heart Ear Bus. Heres their story. Each year the Dubbo Motorcyclist & Drivers Club Inc. holds a Show & Shine at the Ballimore Pub for their Car & Bike enthusiasts. At the conclusion of the day they donate the proceeds to a charity. Dubbo Motorcyclist & Drivers Club have made ...pledge to help a LOCAL charity, & for the past 3 years have decided to donate the proceeds of the day to the Hear our Heart Ear Bus Project. Special thanks to all participants of the 2019 Show & Shine, as it was a particularly difficult year as the Show & Shine continued on despite a HUGE dust storm. Thankfully, it didnt dampen the enthusiasm!! We are so very thankful to the Dubbo Motorcyclist & Drivers Club Inc. enough for choosing to keep their fundraising LOCAL and supporting us. We are humbled & grateful for their ongoing generosity. Pictured is Rex Ridley from the Dubbo Motorcyclist & Drivers Club Inc handing over the proceeds from the Show & Shine held in September 2019 to Virginia , Program Manager from Hear our Heart Ear Bus Project.

The Central School at Gulargambone, as well as all the child care facilities including Gular Preschool, Aussie Kindies & Gilgandra Preschool. ... This term things were a little different due to COVID. We certainly missed our gorgeous Nurse Audiometrist Rachel Kirsop & volunteer retired Nurse Audiometrist Margo Piggott & some of our normal stops at schools, but we still were able to test at most of the schools & centres we normally test at. The Hear our Heart Ear Bus would also like to acknowledge & thank Gilgandras CWA for their assistance in providing us with a venue this week to catch some of the children we werent able to test at their school due to COVID restrictions & the parents that took the time to personally bring their children to the Bus. The HoH Ear Bus would also like to thank all the wonderful Directors, Principals & Learning & Support Teachers (LaSTs) from these schools for their amazing organisation, in this current COVID crisis to assist HoH Ear Bus so testing could safely proceed. Even though things were a little different, we loved testing & providing Healthy Ears Education/ Puppet Shows in Gilgandra & Gulargambone this week. 15.01.2022 Hello it’s Virginia Testing Manager for Hear our Heart Ear Bus Project. I’d normally write Media Officer, but I’ve passed that role on, to our new Media Officer Amy. Congratulations & Welcome to Amy. You’ll be seeing and hearing from Amy in the coming days & weeks & I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing her all the very best in her new & exciting role. ... I will still do the Weekly Wrap of the testing and Healthy ears education for the Bus that week. So here’s it is. This past week the Hear our Heart Ear Bus visited Orana Heights, Dubbo West Public School & Preschool, Burrabadine Christian School & St Mary’s Parish School in Warren. Providing around 100 children with an Ear health Check and or a full Hearing Screen. It was 4 seasons in one week, with what seemed like a day of torrential rain while testing at Orana Heights & gusty winds that made testing a challenge at St Mary’s in Warren although another opportunity to view some stunning countryside on route to Warren. Wet & windy weather aside, we all agree we love what we do in delivering Healthy Ears Education and hearing testing to as many children as possible to ensure normal hearing & learning outcomes to all that pass through the Bus. Next week the HoH Ear Bus will finish off Term 4 testing for Orana Heights, Dubbo West Public School & Preschool and visit our little friends at Warren Preschool. Our Healthy Ear’s Educators will be delivering Puppet shows/ healthy Ears education to Mungrey & Tottenham. That’s all from us, enjoy your children.

15.01.2022 Our volunteer Director Donna Rees daughter Hayley has written a moving post on her own Facebook page about her struggle being deaf and the use of face masks. With her permission we are sharing. It makes you stop and think! Maybe now would be a good time for our local member of Parliament to take this on board too? Is wearing a face mask being inclusive for the many people in our community that are hard of hearing, use english as a second language or have a language disorder that RELY on lip reading to communicate. Good on you Hayley for sharing your story. It seems helping others with hearing loss runs your family!

09.01.2022 Hi its Virginia, HoH Media Officer here, This past week we have been very busy back testing at Schools. 09.01.2022 Partnerships are what make our project so successful. Over the past 2 weeks out teacher Therese Quigley has partnered with Dubbo Public Teachers of the Deaf Donna and Rachel to deliver hearing loss education at Dubbo College. We used our Sound Scouts devices that Walter and Eliza Hall Charitable Foundation bought for us to teach Senior, Delroy and South High Campuses about teenage hearing loss. It was a pleasure to work with both Aboriginal organisations Clontarf and Girls Academy and we have made plans for hearing checks with them using Sound Scouts next year. Pictured are staff from Clontarf and Girls Academies from all 3 campuses.

06.01.2022 As Speech Pathology Week draws to a close, this ones for all our #speechies. Our #ScientificSunday is Auditory Perception vs Speech Production in Children, w...hich explores the support of auditory and speech outcomes for children with hearing loss and the overarching benefits of both hearing technology and speech therapy for speech development. Whats the verdict? A child with normal hearing learns to imitate speech through babbling. They will develop an understanding of speech and language and eventually learn to produce words. Children with hearing loss will not progress like hearing children do without supplementary support. But if they are fitted with the right technology and provided with support, they can develop spoken language "similar to that of their typically hearing peers". This support includes (but is not limited to) an audiologist, who will test, assess speech perception, and provide the appropriate hearing technology. A speech-language pathologist (SLP) will work to help a child with hearing loss develop essential auditory skills through speech production, motor, visual, or tactile means. SLPs across the globe wear many hats in their role, devoting their profession to help their patients communicate with confidence. What should I do? Ensure that you test your childs hearing regularly. This means that if a child does develop a hearing loss, you can detect it early on and get them the support that they need.

05.01.2022 Hello its Virginia, Media Officer here, It was a great week again in the Hear our Heart Ear Bus. We called in on Orana Heights & Redgum Child Care Centre and tested over 100 children this week. A fantastic week, however a reminder to all the parents and carers out there, now that winter is truly upon us, were seeing lots of kids with Eustachisn tube dysfunction which often leads to fluid in the middle ear space. This fluid impacts on the mobility of the Tympanic Membrane... (the ear drum) and potentially impacts on your childs hearing. This then can have the domino effect on their speech, language and overall education. So its a good time to remind you all to practice nose blowing with your little ones or remind the older ones, to blow their noses, to help keep their middle ear healthy. Just like good oral hygiene we clean our teeth twice a day to keep our teeth healthy, its also important to keep our middle ear nice and healthy, so blowing your nose twice daily (at least) is recommended for healthy middle ears. Till next week. Cio And enjoy your children. See more

04.01.2022 Hello, its Virginia, Hear our Heart Media Officer here, As Schools and Preschools/Childcare are taking enrollments for 2021, you may be thinking its a good time to assess your childs hearing and ear health & tick it off your School/Preschool readiness checklist? 04.01.2022 Meet our new team member. Amy Barling. Amy will be taking over Virginia’s role of Media/ Sponsorship Officer. You may remember a lovely story about Amy in the Narromine News around June this year. The Newspaper article told of Hearing Loop Australia sponsoring Amy to complete her Audiometry Nurse course. CEO of Hearing Loop, Ian Riddle, said he is proud to be sponsoring Amy as Audiometry Nurses are scarce in the country and being able to detect and overcome children’s hea...ring problems when they are young is imperative as this is when their brain is developing. To complete her audiometry degree Amy has been doing her practicum at Coonamble Community Heath Centre last term under the guidance of Audiometry Nurse trainer Robyn Hull. Amy thoroughly enjoyed her many hours with Robyn. Pictured below is Amy during her Prac. Amy was inspired to study as an Audiometry Nurse because of her experience with her daughter Matilda, being born deaf. Amy has been volunteering for us for two-years. So it is with much pleasure we offered her the media/sponsorship role to start off her career with us before eventually moving into the hearing testing side of things in the future. Welcome Amy :) See more

03.01.2022 Media officer Amy here! Just thought I would share these dolls as Christmas is only 50 days away. How beautiful are they! Might have to get my Tilly one

03.01.2022 Hi, its volunteer Directors here Donna and Rachel. We have been busy behind the scenes working on making videos to put in with a grant application we are currently working on. We came across this one that we made for the Rural Farmers grant back in 2017 and it bought a big smile to our faces. We thought we would share it again with you. Lovely to see our retired Audiologist Robyn Little feature in it. She helped our project grow and we miss her.

03.01.2022 Partnerships and trust are what makes a difference. Thats what we find in our project anyway! In the last week of school Learning and Support Teacher Liz Ede from Gulargambone Central and our volunteer Director Rachel Mills who works for Department of Education as a Teacher of the Deaf made a visit to Dr Ridha just happen in 48hrs for young JaKeal. And why not squeeze in a visit to Hearing Australia before seeing Dr Ridha at 9:30!!Sam Wellman and Kayla McDonell made thi...s happen for us. JaKeal was such a happy young chappy and enjoyed all the attention. His hearing journey is now well underway thanks to our wonderful testing staff Virginia and Hope who initially followed him up. Next stop for JaKeal is back to Hearing Australia to get his new hearing aid in a hat to help him hear while he is waiting for his ear surgery. We will let you know how he goes. Local partnerships are gold! #doingitforthekids See more

02.01.2022 Hello, its Virginia, HoH Media Officer here, Its with great pleasure I bring you this little story, as its the thoughtfulness and generosity of some of our smaller towns and centres, that make you thankful and really appreciative of their tremendous efforts. Yesterday the Ear Bus tested at Yeoval Preschool. A little preschool that operates 3 days per week. ... And at the time they did their fundraiser & Hear our Heart awareness day, they had 8 enrolled students. Mind you this was on the back of a once in a 100 year drought and what seemed like daily dust storms. But despite these factors, the fantastic team at Yeoval Preschool did a week of pancakes & milkshakes for morning tea which required a gold coin donation to enjoy the morning tea treat. Yeoval Preschool, we are so very humbled, thankful and inspired by your determination. And the support you show of our Hearing Bus. Pictured is 3 of the little cherubs from Yeoval Preschool handing over their wonderful fundraising efforts to Virginia from Hear our Heart Ear Bus.

01.01.2022 Thanks to our service, this year alone we have helped 5 children qualify for Teacher of the Deaf Support with the wonderful team at Dubbo Public School. They travel out to schools, childcares and homes to provide specialised programs.
