25.01.2022 It’s hard for them too. But with some kids, asking a direct question such as are you sad about not going to school? won’t get you far. You might find yoursel...f just getting a big, defensive NO! fired right back. If this sounds familiar, here’s another approach. I’m EXHAUSTED. Does anyone else in this house feel exhausted? Who would have thought staying home could be so tiring? Do you think that’s why I’m tired? Or is it something else? Maybe it’s because everything is different to normal. Maybe that’s why I’m tired. I need a lie down. I feel like I miss all the things we normally do. Like going to work, and school and Nanna’s. Everything feels so strange and weird. I think I might call Nanna for a chat. I wish everything would hurry up and go back to normal! I’m sorry if I’m a bit snappy. I just don’t feel like myself. Maybe I need to have a cup of tea and some big deep breaths. I feel a bit angry about all this today. I miss my friends. I even miss my work! Do you miss anyone? What do you think we should do about it? ...Share your experience and how it feels for you (in an age-appropriate way). In doing so, you’ll show them it’s ok to have feelings. It’s ok to talk about it. We’re all in this together, and there’s things we can do to help ourselves cope just a little bit better.

23.01.2022 COVID-19 and the effect on parenting arrangements The effect of the changing landscape of our world on child-parent relationships COVID-19 and the effect on Family law parenting arrangements... This is certainly a time of unprecedented uncertainty in our living memory. The ongoing impact of the virus upon society will have a flow on effect to the arrangements for children moving between households and spending time with both of their parents. The Family Court has issued a statement about the effect of the pandemic situation on parenting Orders. Click here to read the statement from the Family Court. The Family Law Act states that both parents having a meaningful relationship with children is a primary consideration. Bearing in mind what limitations of movement may be put in place, it is important that children continue to maintain their relationship with both parents. This will need to be balanced with any safety concerns, or restrictions on movement, in each specific case. Unless specific circumstances of risk or restrictions of movement indicate otherwise, it would appear that all arrangements for visitation for children remain in place. The safety and well being of the children must be considered in the context of the particular circumstances of each case. Disagreements may arise about whether a child will attend visits or not. If they do it is important to seek immediate legal advice, because in these very uncertain times, legal advice based on all the circumstances surrounding the family will be necessary. By law, Parenting Orders must be followed unless there is a reasonable excuse for not doing so and it is in the best interests of the child. At this point It would appear that there would need to be some specific risk rather than simply a blanket concern about the COVID-19 situation. Protective measures including full and frank disclosure of any risk of exposure by parents, social distancing, agreements about how and whether the child will be isolated from members external to their family seem appropriate. The Courts remain open for business, albeit by telephone except in the most urgent of cases. Parenting matters can still be listed and returned before a Judge if necessary. That being said, in this period of significant strain on Courts and all of society, there would appear more than ever the need for parents to act in a child focused way and attempt to co-operate with each other in the best interests of their children. If you or a family member require family law advice on parenting or any other family law matter do not hesitate to contact our office. Call us for a no cost initial discussion for advice on your circumstances. Millwater tyrRell law Level 1, 215 Brisbane Street Ipswich QLD 4305 07 3447 0416 Copyright 2019 Millwater Tyrrell Law

20.01.2022 Do not be too upset if your plans for your supervised contact do not go perfectly. Even after tailoring the activities and expectations to your child’s interest, their age, and the length of your visit, sometimes things still won’t go perfectly. Your child’s emotional state, or even your own, may work against everything clicking into place perfectly, despite any preparation. Supervised access can be a stressful time for parents and children alike. If your child is feeling anx...ious or upset, be understanding and empathetic to their situation. Be flexible with the activities you plan, and perhaps bring a backup just in case. Where your child may not feel up to a competitive round of chutes and ladders, a short story read to them by their mum or dad may be more their speed. Supervised contact is an opportunity to build a strong foundation for relationships that are meant to last a lifetime. Don’t be discouraged if the occasional visit does not go according to plan. As long as you’re taking positive steps toward a healthy relationship with your children, you’ll be moving in the right direction.
