14.01.2022 Swami Vivekananda conceptualised this motto for those who joined the Ramakrishna Mission as a monk. But there is no reason to limit its import to them alone. The ideal for the monastics as stated in their answer to what the novice is expected to do, it says: After joining the Order, you have to devote your entire life to achieve the twin ideals: tmano mokshrtham jagat hitya cha one’s own liberation and the good of the world. For the rest of your life, you will therefor...e immerse yourself in spiritual practices and selfless service....Along with these practices, you will also engage yourself with equal zeal and sincerity in selfless work, thus playing your part in the service activities of our organization. And whatever work you do, ... you are expected to do it in a spirit of worship so that your work becomes yet another form of spiritual practice. By spending your days in this manner, you will strive to grow in the qualities of a Sadhu (monk) such as purity, devotion, detachment, unselfishness, truthfulness and Brahmacharya and realize God. One can extrapolate the essence of these noble aims in one’s life regardless of one’s station. There is a Chinese saying that ‘a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.’ A spiritual journey starts when you take the first step towards attaining a Spiritual goal for oneself. What that goal is is left for each one of us to decide. It cannot be spelt out in the relatively unconstrained world of a householder or common existence. There are those who prefer to lead just an ethical existence, others prefer a life of continuous service, some seek knowledge and yet others try to express their inner emotional life through art or devotion. But the path remains vast and like an endless and trackless desert. We keep walking but there seems to be no unifying purpose or goal. We dabble in many beginnings but realise no ends, or conquer a peak only to weep that there is nothing else to conquer. The outward striving ultimately results in an inward quest. We have to get to the core of our being and unless we subtract the ‘less ness’ from ‘restlessness’ we can find no ‘rest’. To unify the three pillars of striving: action, knowledge and devotion, we must pay equal attention to realising our inner being and from a position of reaching this depth of existence, experience effortless action, and thus contribute to the world uniting the fragrance of Being with the wisdom of knowing when, where and how much to act or remain actionless. Thus, life becomes dedicated to the twin purposes of realising the highest potential within and expressing the Being through perfect action without. Hence, the motto ‘Self realisation and to benefit the world’ can become a powerful motive in our own lives, if one chooses to make it so or at least consider its life enhancing potential. May all beings be enlightened and illuminate the world with their wise actions! Love, ABHIJEET See more

02.01.2022 The essential principle of meditation is that you become what you meditate upon. You absorb the qualities of that object of meditation. It is a journey from com...plexity of the mind to simplicity of the heart. It is largely for this reason that we involve the heart in meditation.
