23.01.2022 One of my favourite GRM messages is about how the medical model not only intelleculaises grief but also takes the fine work of Kubler-Ross and applies it to all experiences of grief. Her work was based on cancer patients who knew they were going to die. Having a 'denial' stage is inappropriate for someone how has lost a loved one. They are fully aware of what has happened. I much prefer the person-centered Cal Rogers approach that the Grief Recovery Method employs since it attends to feelings and not some intellectual construct of which emotional "stage" I should be in. The following articles goes into this topic a bit more.

16.01.2022 I am back at Uni this year to complete a Graduate Diploma in Psychology at Murdoch University. So I doubt I will be doing much posting this year since I have a thesis to write.. I have an excellent thesis topic - empathy - and how it can be manipulated - increased and decreased. So I have been doing a lot of reading about the subject over the last month. For April I have to narrow down the literature to a specific research question, develop a timetable for the next 6 months, ...and, as part of the group I am in, submit a research proposal to the Murdoch ethics teams for approval. I have also been reading a lot about Social and Cognitive Psychology, and in particular, a few theories that treat feelings and emotions as sources of information, that in turn shape our thinking. I think some of these theories can explain, to some degree, how the grief recovery method actually works. I would love to do a Masters Degree in Psychology around this theme - since the main driver of the grief recovery method is accessing and completing the undelivered communication (or information) that is contained in grief. So perhaps more on this next time. Take care, Andrew See more

15.01.2022 My thoughts this month have been with the families who lost loved ones on the Malaysian Flight MH370. I cannot begin to imagine what it must feel like, losing a loved one under these circumstances and then to know the search for the aircraft has been called off. In the case of the missing flight MH370, the human brain will want to naturally know and understand what happened on the flight; where did the aircraft finally end up and the final moments of our loved ones? This de...sire is completely understandable. Sometimes the answers to our questions and the body of our loved one is taken away from us. This seems to be the case with MH370. A feature of the grief recovery method is that is looks at the whole length of a relationship - from the moment you first met someone or became aware of them right through to the last memory of being with them. In the case of the MH370 flight where the location of loved ones and details of their final moments are unknown, grief recovery is possible. The method allows for all the memories and feelings to be worked through to complete the communication, to say goodbye from an emotional perspective, rather than focusing on the unknown circumstances at the end of their life. From my heart to yours Andrew Loreck See more

04.01.2022 Below is a link to the obituary in the New York Times to Russell Friedman, who passed away recently. Russell was a co-founder of the Grief Recovery Method.

01.01.2022 If I had a spare couple of grand I would jump on a plane and attend this conference in San Diego. The conference explores the emotional fallout and social/political consequences of the recent US election through the prism of Carl Rogers person centered approach - listening to each other by not judging, criticising or blaming. This approach is very much at the heart of the grief recovery method - and is very much an application of Carl Roger's work applied to the issue of grie...f that John James and the late Russell Friedman have worked so hard to establish and to teach others. However, the approach of Carl Rogers can be applied in any interaction between people, or opposing groups and this is what the conference is about. An approach that is very much needed to make sense of recent events. http://www.centerfortheperson.org//Mailchimp_Blast_2017_Co
