22.01.2022 Please support a Melbourne man who has permanent protection as a refugee from Bahrain, but risks being returned there
19.01.2022 NEED A HOUSESITTER? A lovely young man (late 20s), recently granted a bridging visa WITHOUT work rights is looking to housesit while he waits on his protection visa to be processed. As he can’t work, he can’t pay rent but very happy to look after pets, do errands and keep the garden watered and mowed. Please PM if you know of anyone who may need a reliable, very clean and quiet housesitter
16.01.2022 Watching Australia from Canada over these 2 weeks has been surreal. Arriving here was the epitome of welcome - sign language videos on arrival/departure screens, multi-lingual volunteers roaming the arrivals areas, customs officials that greet you with wide, delighted smiles, taxi ranks with a map that tells you what to pay.... And it continues day by day. It’s made me think how easy life is for me and how hard it is for other humans who didn’t win life’s lottery. Everything... is set up for me to be welcome, to be safe, to succeed in life. Even when I screw up, people are kind and fair to me. Because I’m white, because I’m a citizen, because I was born into a country that values my life. Meanwhile friends and loved ones in Australian immigration detention suffer the daily torment of what is inexplicably labelled ‘administrative detention’; locked up indefinitely, treated like numbers, handcuffed for medical treatment, denied fair process, harassed by guards, separated from family and friends .... the list goes on. This week, there will be protests in Northam (WA), Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne IDCs. I hope we will all find some way to show our support - your MP is a good place to start. 03.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who came to the Open Table dinner last night at the Moroccan Soup Bar. Many of us are trying to work out where to start in terms of standing together with people seeking asylum in Australia. With so much spin and misinformation, it’s really important that we get the facts straight and share them with other people. Here’s some links that will help:... 1) myths and facts https://www.asrc.org.au/pdf/myths-facts-solutions-info_.pdf 2) evidence-based proposal for a better way https://www.kaldorcentre.unsw.edu.au//new-report-kaldor-ce 3) Costs of Detention https://www.kaldorcentre.unsw.edu.au//cost-australias-asyl 4) Listen to refugee and asylum seeker voices http://writingthroughfences.org/writers/
