10.01.2022 The owner of the 22-year-old grade A showjumper, who is still successful at 1.20m level, has urged others not to write off older horses...

05.01.2022 If you can no longer look after a TB with my brand on it please return it to us so we can. Recently an ex racehorse of ours was rescued by some wonderful peopl...e. This horse is 16 years of age. He was well loved as a baby and as a racehorse and by his first owner post racing . He spent a number of years in the performance industry and then sadly ended up needing rescuing. We can’t blame an industry that hasn’t had him in a registered stable for 12 years. We can’t blame the owner who sold him on. We can’t blame the performance industry. We CAN blame the last arseholes who had him in their care. It is an individual that let this horse down and all the horses that end up in the knackery. Whether that individual is a Trainer, an owner, a pony club mum or dad, a show jumper or any of the myriad of disciplines that a TB is used in. Racing is not squeaky clean but no industry is. There are great re training programs in place in some states and I look forward to Queensland following suit soon. In my opinion the initial period post racing should still be the responsibility of the owners who were involved in racing the horse. I’m not sure what length of time maybe 6 months would be fair or until rehoming is established. When retired they need to be assessed as to their future viability. We are naive in thinking that every horse is suitable for re homing. Some will have broken down in wind or limb and euthanasia is the kindest and most humane option. Some have temperaments that would be dangerous if the horse was given to the inexperienced. Those that retire sound have to be given a chance at a second career or retired to a caring knowledgeable home and not to a paddock and left to starve. Thousands of thoroughbreds are excelling at second careers in all disciplines. We love our TB’s
