Fortes in Fide: Strong in Faith Participants will be encouraged to explore faith from an expansive and philosophical perspective that takes account of the meaning each has drawn from their own life experience. An MSC understanding of strong in faith begins with the conviction that meaning and purpose in life comes when we learn to believe in God’s love for us and we allow that love to transform our lives. To be ‘strong in faith’ is more about seeking the transcendent through an openness to mystery and unanswered questions than it is about dogma and the possession of true belief. Faith is the courageous search for meaning, and rituals and beliefs are at the service of this search. Faith is more about questions and doubts and the courage to follow the heart’s call than it is about certainty and absolute truth. From an MSC perspective the mark of faith is to ‘be an imitator of the Heart of Jesus. to radiate mutual affection and true charity while acting with consideration and kindness.’ Faith and belief are identified as distinct from each other, while at the same time inextricably linked. The definitions that are offered for faith are expansive and inclusive. The connection between religion, belief, spirituality and faith is explored. Participants will be encouraged to identify the faith and meaning that animates their own lives and to listen to the call to come deeper.
