21.01.2022 Thank you and Happy Fathers Day to all the Fathers out there!

21.01.2022 SES currently have hundreds of jobs to attend to across Victoria. Please be patient if you require assistance as jobs are done by priority, not by when they were phoned in. Please remember all SES people in orange are volunteers. CFA are also flat out. Offer them a nice cool drink if you can.

18.01.2022 As of the 1 July 2017 Drivers in Victoria will face big fines if they do not slow to 40 kilometres per hour when passing emergency vehicles with flashing lights... or sirens that have stopped on the roadside The rule will apply to Victoria Police, Ambulance Victoria, Metropolitan Fire Brigade, Country Fire Authority and State Emergency Service vehicles.

17.01.2022 Last night our members welcomed in our new controller Steve Kern. Steve is a dual volunteer with both the CFA and VICSES, whilst running his own consultancy business. We look forward to his leadership, knowledge and skill sharing over the next 2 years. Our members would also like to congratulate our outgoing Controller, Marc Pitt, for his time and dedication for the past 6 years as Heathcote Controller. Marc has worked tirelessly to increase unit membership to a thriving 20+ ...members. Marc has always had safety driving his decisions and encourages VICSES values at all times, with all members. Marc maintains that VICSES is my second family, here we look after one another and share our knowledge. Pictured is our outgoing controller Marc Pitt, receiving a thank you plaque from our Regional Manager Mark Cattell, and our incoming Controller Steve Kern, receiving his new epaulettes. See more

14.01.2022 Due to the nature of COVID-19, in recent times we’d taken a break from face-to-face skills maintenance and training to focus only on responding to emergencies. From this week, you might see us back out undertaking training in small groups to ensure we have the essential skills and capability required to respond to an emergency. Emergency services as a permitted industry are able to conduct critical training and exercise under the directions, as endorsed by the Victorian Chief... Health Officer. Our crews are following all the COVIDSafe principles, wearing masks, and working hard to ensure we are there for our community.

10.01.2022 At Work - How will floods affect your business? It’s not just homes that can be affected by flooding, flooding may also be a risk to your business. Think of how much you could lose in stock, equipment and fittings due to a flood, along with the profits you could lose for the days and weeks it might take you to clean up after the flood. https://www.ses.vic.gov.au/web/www/get-ready/at-work

09.01.2022 Heathcote SES have recently given their shed a new facelift and concrete apron. This will help the members greatly by enabling them to train on a clean solid surface and help maintain the shed in a neat and inviting state. The Heathcote SES is a volunteer based service assisting the community with emergencies arising from storm, earthquake, landslides, and flooding. They also assist police and ambulance services with road, air rail and Industrial emergencies. The Heathcote SES members would like to invite members of the community to visit their Unit at 3-7 Wright street, Heathcote, and see the improvements they have made. Come and have a chat. They train each Thursday between 7pm and 9pm.

07.01.2022 La Nina confirmed in Victoria: what it means for you VICSES is urging Victorians to prepare for wet and wild weather, with the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) confirming today that a La Nina system will affect Australia this spring. A La Nina is a weather pattern that brings high rainfall, that increases the risk of flash and riverine flooding. These flood events have occurred in 12 out of 18 similar La Nina weather events since 1900 - somewhere around Australia.... In 2010/2011, 140 townships, 68,000 properties and 7,500 people were impacted by flooding across Victoria, with now the time to prepare for potentially similar outcomes. VICES has developed 120 easy-to-read local flood guides, in a bid to raise flood awareness for community’s on their local risk profile and save lives. Many of us don’t know that floods are the second deadliest natural disaster in Australia, with the majority of fatalities due to people being washed away in vehicles. It takes only 15cm of water to float a small car, with Victorians urged to never take the risk of driving or walking through it. Before the impacts of La Nina take hold, VICSES also wants Victorians in low laying areas to know the basic steps of sandbagging and what to do when impacted by a major flood. This entails 1.) Sourcing sandbags prior to a flooding event and knowing how to bag doors and water entry points 2.) blocking drains and toilets to prevent back-flow with sandbags inside a garbage bag 3.) lifting valuable items onto tables or benches and 4.) leaving your home for somewhere safer such as the home of family or friends on higher ground. It comes as VICSES volunteers return to critical small group face-to-face training and skill maintenance in preparation for spring. Training was conducted exclusively online during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, while operational response continued as usual and included several storm events, searches (supporting Victoria Police) and road rescues. You can read more on BOM’s La Nina outlook here: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/enso/outlook/, and VICSES sandbagging guides and here: https://www.ses.vic.gov.au//0d2fa032-dfc6-f277-ea8a-2a0c36

03.01.2022 Did you know that it can take as little as 15cm for a car to float. Thats the size of an average pen! The danger of driving in floodwater is a community safet...y issue. The Victoria State Emergency Service (VICSES) has responded to over 100 requests for assistance related to vehicles that have become stranded in water over the past nine months. In 2016, VICSES responded to 126 call outs regarding vehicles trapped in floodwater, Says Tim Wiebusch, Acting Chief Officer Operations. Weve seen incidents already this year that just shouldnt be occurring. Vehicles that become stranded in water places our SES volunteer crews and other responders at risk, he adds. Thats why we are launching the 15 to float campaign, to highlight just how easy it is for a vehicle to become stranded in water. Research conducted by UNSW demonstrates that as little as 15cm of water is enough for a vehicle to start to float, reducing the drivers control and endangering occupants. For more information on the 15 to float campaign and to see your vehicles float point visit www.15tofloat.com.au

02.01.2022 The members of the Heathcote SES would like to wish our community a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year for 2021.
