24.01.2022 Is this a Belgian Malinois or a kangaroo?

23.01.2022 Bred to work, born to serve, the meticulous thought before these wonderful dogs even begin to learn their jobs is extraordinary. Huge respect for these amazing animals who spend their lives in the service of us humans <3

22.01.2022 Here is a great video. The philosophy behind this is fabulous, whatever type of training you do. Pet, competition, whatever. Mutual swapping of energy and play. Any move becomes desirable to the pup. They come willingly to be and work with you, rather than hyper-engaging with the world around them and being unruly.

22.01.2022 For the Golden Retriever owners, this to this day is one of the best dog dance performances I've ever seen. Yep, this is a sport but you don't really see it done this well in Australia. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqbVbPvlDoM

21.01.2022 This is a very good thing to think about when wearing masks (which I strongly agree with and feel we should be outside of the lockdown areas, so this is not a post against masks). From the fantastic K9 Company. Highly recommend you pay them a visit for some training at their club if you live over Eltham way. Dogs react as stress 'layers' build when out and about. Sometimes it only takes one more thing to tip them over...

19.01.2022 A little cross promotion... in my 'other' life I've been a children's educational author for more than 20 years (as well as writing for adults here and there), with over 150 readers and other books published for mostly primary school-aged children. These books help children along on their reading journey all around the world. If you have children that are home from school at present, you may want to like and keep an eye on my author page as within the next couple of weeks I w...ill begin placing some free learning ideas relating to literacy, for parents to help children get inspired and do work from home that I'm sure their amazing teachers are providing them with. COVID-19 has made learning tough for all - children, parents and teachers. So having worked in this area for so long now I thought I'd try to give something back at no charge. LET'S KEEP THE KIDS OF THE WORLD LEARNING! :-) See more

18.01.2022 Here's a fascinating YouTube video from a very clever trainer and her little Sheltie. Humans can do things without much effort that require a great deal of patience and a totally different approach to get dogs to do. Here, to get her Sheltie to actually look at an object and 'match' it, it's not as simple as it seems. You first must train the dog to understand a target stick. You must also train the dog to wait on a start pad which it will associate with the place you go to a...ctually make something happen. Then watch how she cleverly uses the target stick to teach the dog to see one toy and pick the same toy. Then the dog has a 'lightbulb moment' on the yellow toy and goes to go to it by herself :-) They don't do it because they go, 'Yeah, that one's the same'. It's a learnt behaviour for reward. This is where when training your dog the simplest things, you often have to throw out your own deductive reasoning and 'human thinking' and really think like a dog to teach well :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch See more

17.01.2022 Here's a particularly important couple of pie charts for people who have gotten new puppies over the time of COVID-19 - as well as other times. Socialisation during the first sixteen weeks of life is absolutely critical for pups because what you do during this time is pretty well hard wired for life. Scientists worked this out back in the 1950s (Scott and Fuller for anyone interested). This stuff makes a difference to the happiness of your puppy's whole life <3 *** Edited to ...add that these pie charts were created by Jackie Abikhair of AbiK9 in NSW. If you're looking for a really good trainer in NSW Jackie is the one! And you can like and follow her fb page here for more good info: https://www.facebook.com/abik9dogtraining/?eid=ARA4CZEEJ1dcVjHE_9T2v_-znwaVVzGvpXk30tREQrEyTVTBDbG2tJwEnHn210jifvSznl0jdmY5fiwF&timeline_context_item_type=intro_card_work&timeline_context_item_source=717842797&fref=tag See more

16.01.2022 These two amazing Northern Territory Police K9s are my lovely girl Bara's sons. You may see us out and about working, though our work isn't quite as dangerous and important as these two young guys do! Two brothers working to keep the community of NT safe, bred by Garsova Working Line German Shepherd Dogs <3

16.01.2022 A STORY OF ONE IN TEN THAT IS SO IMPORTANT TO YOUR DOG'S HEALTH! So with the warmer weather on its way I thought I'd put an important post here for people who live on the Island and in Bass Coast area. I know many who don't give their dogs heartworm treatment and I understand why - it can be expensive (try having German Shepherds, usually two!). But the population here is changing and more people and dogs are in the area than ever before. Let me give you my personal view, whi...Continue reading

15.01.2022 Got an older dog that can't move around so well? Many people have but old dogs can learn new tricks and they truly love to do this. Many old dogs seem depressed to me, either by painful conditions or lack of being able to chase a ball or do things they like to do. Django here can still go for walks and play limited games of tug, but this exercise below is fun to teach, not that hard and looks very cute when your dog will cross his paws on command. Give it a go! Teach shake hands first. Then ask the dog to lie down and have him target your hand with his paw as shown in the video. Then gradually remove or 'fade' your hand, until the dog simply crosses his paw over the other on command. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=az4waRn1N1s

14.01.2022 Got a Kelpie in your back yard? This is the kind of thing working dogs thrive on. If they can't herd sheep all day they need lots of other thinking activities rather than just walking. This is taking it to a whole other level though :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch

14.01.2022 We love this pic! It pops up every now and then, and we love sharing it, again and again.

14.01.2022 Here's a very interesting video about scent detection. I can tell you from personal experience that when doing nosework of any kind with your dog and particularly this work or tracking, that if you read your dog well, it's as close to having a running conversation with a workmate as you can get. Working dogs isn't just 'working' them. It's all about communication and timing with another being to get a great end result! https://www.youtube.com/watch

14.01.2022 We cant believe it has been over an entire year since we met our first puppy graduates! Weve been sent some lovely updates over the year and even managed to c...atch up with a couple of puppies since their graduation photos. Have you had a graduation photograph with us? Wed love to hear how your pup is going! Please leave some pics and an update in the comments

13.01.2022 A very important and thought provoking article that may have you asking yourself quite a few questions about you and your dog. It's definitely NOT just for people who do dogsports. This philosophy applies across the board in all pet dog training - leash walking etc. etc. Worth the five minute read it might just change your dog's life :-)

13.01.2022 I wanted to share this clever Border Collie video with you guys from one of Austalia's best dog trainers, Vicki Austin in NSW. Impulse control means teaching you dog to sit tight and think and listen before they act. To be honest, I rarely see it in pet dogs. Rarely. The reason? People don't know about it and how important it is to teach it as a puppy, right from the start. It means that dog who may leap about on visitors or not hear you when you call becomes a much better 'listener' and it's important to teach this in a very good and positive way if you want success in your training and in your life with your furry friend. Teaching it through games is the way to go and a game of tug is so much more than it seems...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLUywFZCwrU

13.01.2022 For anyone considering getting a 'rescue' dog, this applies really to all breeds. These dogs have a history that requires a lot of patience and understanding. Rescue dogs are often hard hard work. But then any dog is hard, hard work. That's how you show them love. By the work you put in to give them the the best possible training and lifestyle <3.

11.01.2022 Whatever you're doing with your pups this weekend, stay safe and have a good one!

09.01.2022 And on the subject of tricks, here's my dear dog Dunja, who Iost earlier this year. She was a very clever tricks dog and thrived on learning them in her old age. She's 11 here in this video! Practising a new trick carrying a basket in an area of distraction. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_3Ms7571iw&t=8s

09.01.2022 This is little Ralphy and his lovely owner Lisa. They were thrilled to receive a gift of a photo of Ralphy pushing a trolley full of presents (he's a very clever boy and I trained him to push this trolley in just over two weeks!). The photo and framing was done so beautifully by Island Paw Prints. HIGHLY recommend their services for anyone looking for the best photos ever of their pets. They make the process so easy and do a superb job :-)

08.01.2022 Hi everyone, important post here! Please read below:Hi everyone, important post here! Please read below:

06.01.2022 This gentleman is one of the world's most successful dog trainers. He makes a point that applies to all dog owners/animal trainers I think :-)

06.01.2022 Remember the K9s <3

06.01.2022 Paul McPhail - one of the best working Kelpie breeders and trainers in the country. His dogs are working herding dogs and are very well trained. Will your dogs do this? As part of a good training regime, they should... :-)

06.01.2022 This is a very important read. I've had people contact me about certain breeds like the German Shepherd for instance and when I ask why they decided to pick that particular breed (and it's not the only one) the response has often been, 'We like the look of it'. Sadly, this is often a recipe for trouble and heartache. Many breeds are unsuitable if you are looking for a good family dog that will fit a busy family lifestyle. And sadly, a number of breeders won't tell you that be...cause unfortunately, not all breeders are scrupulous, even if they are registered. Now, not every dog looks 'badass' like a Cane Corso. But many - and that includes the German Shepherd and PARTICULARLY the Working Line German Shepherds (yes, the 'flat backed' ones) that the services use and I own, are NOT suitable for first time big dog owners and come with particular needs that absolutely must be met. And that means many hours of work. Many. This article is gold. See more

05.01.2022 Having lost my two old friends in the past few months, since March, this lovely meme rang true <3

04.01.2022 Note to all my lovely clients :-) Due to the current increase in Victorian Govt. restrictions because of the increase in COVID-19 cases, my protocol pinned to the top of this page will continue for a while yet. Please read before booking. It includes training outside only and contactless training wherever possible. Let's all hope this virus is soon crushed and that Victoria begins to have the success that other states are having. Stay safe everyone <3

03.01.2022 I like this one!

02.01.2022 Here's another one folks. This is the rule I live by for all my dogs, big and small. My dogs are not for playing with, they don't need doggy friends as they are not children. They play with each other in their own family at home. And learn to politely ignore other dogs. In this way they also listen to you much better as they see you as a more valuable playmate than all those dogs at the park.

02.01.2022 So dog breed shapes are so often influenced by fashion and not functionality, unfortunately. This leads to health problems in both body and mind. Look how different the St Bernard was back in the day, when it was used more as a working animal!

02.01.2022 It doesn't matter whether you're training good in-home and leash walking behaviours, high calibre competition behaviours or anything else with a dog for that matter - success is totally, totally dependent on the commitment of the owner. Practice, patience, consistency and commitment. That's what it takes to have a well behaved, well trained dog :-)

01.01.2022 Those who know my dear old boy Django will know that he is quite elderly and has a wobbly back leg these days, thanks to a spinal injury caused by a grass seed. However, here he is in his younger and very fit and strong days. He's an awesome dog and has learnt to do so many things over the years! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igaJB9CBRT8
