25.01.2022 This is a perfect example of how our system overtreats for just in incase instead of offering choices or treating women based on their circumstances instead of like we are all the same.

25.01.2022 This week, after receiving a large number of inquiries on this topic, I've updated my blog post on how to cancel a labour induction. "It is more important than ...ever to ask questions. The key one is why induction is being recommended. Is this a routine recommendation, or are there specific reasons why it is recommended for you in particular? It may be the case that the population statistics tell you that A is a bit safer than B. But you are not the population, you are an individual. And both A and B will have consequences. There are no guarantees, and no ‘no risk’ option. Sorry. It’s up to you which path you take, as each one has pros and cons. (If you’d like to look into this more, you might like my book, What’s Right For Me?) If you are told that induction is a safer or better option than waiting for labour to start on its own, ask for an explanation. Why is the person saying that? Ask for the research on which this statement is based. And ask for the actual numbers. And the paper which they came from. If someone tells you that something is twice as safe, that’s not a helpful statement on its own. Has the chance gone from one in four to one in two? That’s a considerable change. Or from one in 2000 to one in 1000? Maybe not so much." https://www.sarawickham.com//how-to-cancel-a-labour-induc/

25.01.2022 In 2012, the year Caroline Lovell died, there were 27 maternal deaths in Australia. It is an absolute tragedy that Caroline died, particularly given the circums...tances, and she left behind a beautiful family who absolutely did not deserve what eventuated. I can't comment on what happened at that birth. I don't know whether the midwives were negligent, though the reports come across that way. What I do know is Caroline died during her birth at home and it was tragic, and that the midwives who attended her birth are being held accountable for her death via the legal system, but also by the Australian population in general - the midwives are being demonised, along with homebirth, everywhere you look. However, what of the other 26 women who died in 2012? Did they die in hospital? Does that make it ok? Are their deaths not splashed all over the media because there's noone being held to blame? Or are those deaths not addressed because they happened within the hospital system? Why does every maternal death reported by the media happen to be one attended by a private midwife, when the reality is that the vast majority of adverse outcomes actually happen in hospital, often under the care of obstetricians? What about the countless women who end up statistics of maternal suicide, because of the birth trauma they sustained in the system? Do their deaths not count? Should we not demand reporting on them? One such example of the discrepancy in reporting between obstetric and midwifery led care was when, within the same year, two women safely birthed twins. Both sets of these twins were 'undiagnosed' (i.e. their care providers did not know the mother was carrying twins). One set of twins were born safely at home, under the care of a midwife, and the other set birthed safely in hospital, under obstetric care. The difference? The private midwife was reported, suspended and eventually forfeited her registration, while the obstetrician was applauded for dealing so well with a twin birth. Are we not yet done burning midwives at the stake? How much longer will we allow this to happen?

24.01.2022 Long term effects of birth interventions is something that crosses my mind regularly. Will how I birthed my daughters affect how they birth their children https://theconversation.com/how-birth-interventions-affect-

19.01.2022 Home Birth Without Fear This little bundle was born at home by the most fearless mother, although this was her third baby she had never experienced natural labour, but this didn’t deter her from her goal one little bit. Having her first end in a csection at 41+5 weeks she was lucky enough to have a vaginal birth following an induction at 42+1 weeks with her second child but this still came with many interventions and complications and she just knew that this time she wanted s...omething different, something more. Having armed herself with all the knowledge she could and trusted entirely in her own bodies ability she was able to not only birth but also catch her own baby at home in their bath without the need for induction or any other intervention under the loving and trusting eyes of her amazing husband. It was truely a pleasure to share in their experience and I hope this memory will remain strong forever as part of her journey through motherhood and the birth she had only dreamt of See more

17.01.2022 Did you catch your baby when she was born? How was it? . Being the first person to touch your baby can be an intimate and exhilarating experience. This w...ill be the very first contact she will have with the world outside your belly. . You may be able to do it all on your own or by having your partner or midwife help by guiding your hands to reach down and bring baby up to your chest. 14.01.2022 Unfortunately birth trauma is becoming more and more common. I believe this has something to do with the fact that we are veering away from more natural births with the rise of interventions and more medical based births. Knowing your options and being well informed is the first step to ensuring you have your best birth so contact me for an obligation free chat about your birth anytime.

12.01.2022 I don’t agree. That we can fill stadiums with fans to watch a ball be thrown... but Fathers are barred from appointments. I don’t agree that we can gather in gr...eat numbers at a pub...but not gather to celebrate birth. I don’t agree, that with the right self provided PPE, women can’t have their mothers, sisters, photographers, videographers or friends by their side as they journey into motherhood. Our bodies. Our journey. Our choice. Always. Defend it. Push for it. Make noise about it. Birth isn’t medical, it’s spiritual See more

10.01.2022 Researchers believe that giving birth in an upright position can benefit the mother and baby for several physiologic reasons. Physiologic refers to a healthy bo...dy’s normal function. In an upright position, gravity can help bring the baby down and out. Also, when someone is upright to give birth, there is less risk of compressing the mother’s aorta, which means there is a better oxygen supply to the baby. Upright positioning also helps the uterus contract more strongly and efficiently and helps the baby get in a better position to pass through the pelvis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies have shown that compared to the back-lying position, the dimensions of the pelvic outlet become wider in the squatting and kneeling or hands-and-knees positions (Gupta et al. 2017). Finally, research has shown that upright birthing positions may increase maternal satisfaction and lead to more positive birth experiences (Thies-Lagergren 2013) - Evidence Based Birth Posted @withregram @devynnleannephotography There were moments of doubt and pure exhaustion but it was beyond worth it. . . . #uprightbirth #physiologicalbirth #birthphotography #naturalbirth #labour #birth #midwife #birthing #activebirth #hypnobirthingaustralia #Geelong #torquay #justborn

06.01.2022 Wondering if anyone would like to share their thoughts on the placenta ? Did you give it any thought after the birth of your child, its purpose ? Did you consider taking it home for encapsulation or burial under a tree to celebrate the birth of your child or does the simple idea disgust you. Do you wish you had being informed more about options and benefits ? Feel free to share any thoughts or feeling all are welcome

05.01.2022 If you have had a baby before chances are your familiar with many of these phrases and simply didn’t realise how deliberately most things are just done to you like your not entitled to have a choice or opinion or the capacity to be educated in labour. If you haven’t had a baby yet now is the time to educate and prepare yourself. https://birthsmalltalk.com//lets-just-pop-you-on-a-trace-/

05.01.2022 Yes 1 in every 3 woman will have a cesarean birth. Its estimated that aprox only 1 in 10 woman actually need one. Educating yourself and getting the right support is your best deference to avoid unnecessary intervention and understand the benefits of natural birth for you and your baby.

05.01.2022 The last month has been a big whirlwind but I had the privilege to be apart of 3 absolutely amazing births despite everything else that’s going on in the world. Over the next month or so I’d love to share a short story of each of these amazing and strong mothers on their journey to avoid inductions or VBAC after 2 c-sections. Their strength determination and pure willpower gave them births they had only dreamt of and left me in awe of their ability to believe in themselves and their bodies. There was nothing more amazing then watching each of them catch their own babies and begin their journey of motherhood once again

02.01.2022 Something I often say to mothers is that it’s your body, your baby and your birth. You can do whatever the heck you want however you want and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

02.01.2022 My first few pregnancies I did every test I though I had to have later on I learnt that some of the results changed nothing for me except the fact that they were used to limit my options. Decide what test are right for you. My doula clients have access to all of this information in simple evidenced based form so you can make your own decision based on what’s right for you.
