17.01.2022 The Queen Bee: Ruler or Slave? The queen is the mother of the hive. A queen bee has a barbless sting and can sting repeatedly to defend herself when required, but a queen bee cannot feed herself and relies entirely on her attendant bees for her food, grooming and waste removal. She will lay up to 2000 eggs a day (that’s more than her own body weight!). She releases pheromones that keep the bees happy, content and united as a hive.... As she ages/declines, or if the hive is without a queen, the bees will replace her. It is the worker bees who initiate swarming and select the new hive’s location. 15.01.2022 We’ve got something VERY special to share: Our first, and very likely only, crop of White Box Honey. It’s very rare to get a crop of this honey even though the tree flowers every 8-10 years. There are significant health implications for the bees if they work a White Box flow and bee keepers actively avoid it. ... Knowing it was likely to flower this year deliberately over-wintered our bees with plenty of honey. They worked the White Box flow, but stored it rather than used it as their food source. Which means... Well, this! We now have White Box joining our range of speciality honey varieties. It’s a light to medium strength honey, smooth, mellow, and slightly fruity in flavour. 07.01.2022 Hate being botbered by wasps during the warm weather? It’s not too late to set a trap for queen wasps still establishing their nests. Catching a queen now, means one less nest to deal with later. There are plenty of DIY instructions for creating simple, cheap traps using a plastic soft drink bottle. At this time of year, European wasps are attracted to sources of sugar. We’ve attached the recipe we are currently using in our traps. Alrhough it’s honey based, vanilla is added to repel bees, and it’s working well. We caught another two queens today!
