25.01.2022 7 DAYS TOMORROW, until the lights are on and the doors are open again to Heavy Metals!! With today’s announcement, we can now open sooner than the original date. So we have set our official re-opening date to Monday the 8th of June, as we retrieve leased gear and finalise on going repairs to our facilities, so you all come back to a very heavy, Heavy Metals We are committed to maintaining the social distancing standards outlined by the government. We are lucky to have ou...r members spread training across different hours of our day, so the 20 person limit at one time should not effect operation. Should it become an issue around the busiest hours of 5-8pm, we will make further arrangements to adhere to these restrictions. We are looking forward to seeing all your faces under the barbell again next week! #heavymetalhorde #noFear #Pbtime #strongereveryday See more

Here’s Trish doing some shoulder work on her recovery day.... Troy pulled this smooth 205kg deadlift Julie smashed some pull-ups with Coach Ricardo. Troy and James are two of our lifters competing at the Townsville Open held right here at Heavy Metals. Come down and support them on comp day. 25.01.2022 No lights? No problem. Huge crowd yesterday during a massive thunderstorm that made us lift in the dark. Brian had some very disrupted training recently so we decided to do a little test to fully reset and we came away with PB’s across the board. Congratulations on your first 6 plate pull, now to hit it on the platform in April! #heavymetalhorde #noFear #Pbtime #strongereveryday

21.01.2022 At Heavy Metals we pride ourselves on being different to the large commercial gyms. We're not just a gym, we're a community and we train, compete and socialise together. A few ways we're different are: We have gym dogs. Coach Ricardo's dog Freya is a regular at the gym and many of our members also bring their furry pals along for a session. Everyone says hello to each other. Because we're a smaller gym, all our members get to know each other. ... We supervise you while you lift and provide technique advice. We don't just sit at a desk. We allow kids. We have plenty of members with young children. As long as you can keep your child safe and entertained you can bring them along to training with you. We allow chalk. Many commercial gyms have banned chalk because it can be messy but at Heavy Metals you'll find a chalk bowl smack bang in the middle of our deadlift platforms. Everyone is welcome. We have members who are young, old, have disabilities, are complete beginners or seasoned athletes. No matter who you are, as long as you're keen to improve, you're welcome at Heavy Metals. No lock-in contracts or registration fees. If you've had enough of the big box gyms and want to try something different, we're offering a free, 7-day trial. Just flick us a message.
21.01.2022 A very smooth squat PB at 150kg for Christie with a bit more in the tank. Christie just completed her first strictly powerlifting program so we are very excited to see how she improves on her lifts with more specific powerlifting training over the next year! #heavymetalhorde #noFear #Pbtime #strongereveryday
19.01.2022 Big PB for 16 year old Harry with this 160kg squat with plenty more in the tank. Harry just completed his first 8 week Powerlifting program after a short introductory block and is making great progress! #heavymetalhorde #noFear #Pbtime #strongereveryday
19.01.2022 Young Chris is another Heavy Metals athlete competing at the Australian Powerlifting Union North Queensland State Qualifier being held on February 13 at CrossFit Townsville. Chris has shown great dedication to training and is one of our few powerlifters who trains in the morning. He's in the gym and lifting by 6am. His hard work is paying off and he's had some great strength gains. Here he is pulling 115kg for a triple. This will be his first powerlifting competition and w...e're keen to see him hit some PBs. #heavymetalshorde #strongereveryday #youthpowerlifting
18.01.2022 A very successful day on the platform this weekend for our ladies at the Para Powerlifting Nationals in Brisbane!! Trish came away with second place and a 5kg competition PB of 65kg with a bit more in the tank. Cheree place third, narrowly missing her final attempt of 58kg, but came away with 56kg, also a competition PB. For those that don’t know, Para Powerlifting is absolutely one of the strictest sports in the world in terms of rules and standards of competition. Lifter...s must not only lift the weight successfully, they must execute the lift flawlessly, with a perfect pause on the chest and no twisting, turning, unevenness and jagged motion on the press We are super proud of our ladies and their work. They train hard and never miss a session. We look forward to all the work ahead of us to fulfil their dreams of competing in the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
16.01.2022 Our Christmas Party is on the 21st of December, all our extended Heavy Metals family and friends are welcome to come!
16.01.2022 A common question we get asked is whether conventional or sumo deadlifts are better. The answer is... complicated. Sumo deadlifts have a shorter range of motion and place more emphasis on the quads. They are often favoured by lifters with shorter limbs. Sumo deadlifts are also more technical ... Conventional deadlifts place more emphasis on the back and are are often viewed as the harder of the deadlift variations strength wise because of the longer range of motion. They are often favoured by longer limbed athletes, especially those with longer arms. To make it even more complicated, hip structure also comes into play. To decide which variation is best for you, we recommend giving both a go and seeing which one you feel most comfortable with.
16.01.2022 Hi folks, we’re still here and thriving well! The 2020 NQ Games have been cancelled, to no surprise. This means we have had to sadly cancel the Powerlifting, the event that we were hosting. Heavy Metals had athletes competing in 7 different sports out of the 40 or so offered in the games. But the closure of the games is an absolute necessity due to the current global circumstances. Heavy Metals has taken significant measures to ensure the facilities are cleaned daily, and ...that wipes, cleaning products and hand sanitisers are made available for members to use as they go. In these difficult times we’d like to remind our extended community to heed the advice of health authorities, sanitise thoroughly and to avoid unnecessarily being out in public. So nevertheless, here’s some of the sports we were excited to compete in, featuring the worlds favourite commodity. #heavymetalhorde #noFear #Pbtime #strongereveryday
14.01.2022 Lifting in competition is very different to lifting in the gym. For starters, there is commands delivered by referees that you have to follow or your lift won't count. If you're lifting in the Townsville Open, make sure you're familiar with the below. Squat commands: Once you’ve unracked the bar, you need to lock out your knees and ensure your torso is upright. You must then wait for the head ref to say SQUAT before you can start your descent. Once you’ve finished the ...lift and you’re standing upright again, the ref will say RACK and you can then rack the weight. Bench commands: After you’ve unracked the weight, make sure your arms are locked out, feet are flat on the platform and your butt is on the bench. You must then wait for the ref to say START. Then you can start lowering the weight. Once the bar is motionless on your chest, you’ll then hear the ref say PRESS and you can start pressing the bar upwards. Once you’ve finished pressing, the refs will say RACK and you can rack the bar. Deadlifts commands: Once you’ve lifted the bar and you’re in your finished deadlift position, the ref will say DOWN and you can place the bar down on the platform. For your lift to count, your hips and torso must be upright with shoulders back and knees locked out. Got a question about competition commands? Pop it in the comments.

10.01.2022 Here’s a massive set of 6 from Trish last week for a huge PB. We were very happy with the precision of the first 5 reps here. Trish will be transitioning to the standard Bench Press next week as she prepares for the Deep North Powerlifting Challenge in Cairns in 8 weeks time along with 8 other lifters from Heavy Metals. We might see some sneaky attempts at national records from two or three of our lifters. #heavymetalhorde #noFear #Pbtime #strongereveryday

07.01.2022 If you decreased your training or took a break over the Christmas period then now’s the time to jump back in and get started on conquering those 2021 goals. If you’re not sure where to start here’s a few tips: Don’t try to get any new PBs on your first session back. This can put you at risk of injury.... Don’t be disheartened if you don’t feel as strong or fit as you did before Christmas. While the first few sessions might be hard, you’ll quickly get back to where you were. Don’t skip warm-ups or recovery. You’ll be more prone to being sore after a break from training so proper warm-ups and recovery will be more important than ever. Do ease back into training. You might be a little bit de-trained so there’s no harm in taking it easy on your first few sessions back. Get back on a structured training program. This will give you routine and direction in your training. Make some short and long-term goals. This will help you stay motivated.

05.01.2022 Should women lift heavy weights? Many women are worried that lifting weights will cause them to turn into a female version of the Hulk. This is definitely a myth as it takes specialised training, nutrition and lots of time for women to gain large amounts of muscle mass. So, don't be scared to pick up a barbell because you could be missing out on huge benefits including:... Gaining muscle. While you will gain some muscle you'll also likely lose body fat making you look leaner and "toned". Increase strength which also helps to build confidence. Improve flexibility and joint strength which can in turn reduce joint pain Improve balance and posture Lifting weights has been linked to higher bone density which can reduce your risk of Osteoporosis. Improve performance in other sports or activities like Crossfit We find many women are nervous about lifting weights but once they get started they quickly become addicted and never look back. Some of our female members had never touched a barbell before joining Heavy Metals and are now confidently lifting more than their bodyweight. If you're keen to reap the rewards of strength training we can show you how. Just send us a message to ask about our free 7-day trial.
05.01.2022 How’s this!!! 180kg single for a 5kg PB on bench for @james__oh_ in training today. This is the heaviest bench press for u18 in Australia regardless of weight class. Should he hit this weight in competition in under two weeks it will be 25kgs over his own national record, and an unofficial WORLD RECORD by a whopping 9kgs! We are looking very forward too the #deepnorthpowerliftingchallenge in Cairns on the 26th of September where 10 of our athletes will take the platform. ...It is looking to be a fantastic day full of PBs and fun, with some record attempts being thrown in for good measure! #heavymetalhorde #Pbtime #noFear #strongereveryday

03.01.2022 Due to new COVID-19 restrictions introduced by the Queensland Government, it is now mandatory to wear masks inside recreational facilities such as gyms. Please make sure you bring a mask to training with you, unless you have a medical exemption. Thank you to everyone who has been wearing masks at Heavy Metals. We know how uncomfortable wearing a mask is
03.01.2022 Programs aren't just for powerlifters. We find them so beneficial that we include programs in the cost of our memberships. It helps give our members direction in their training and then results follow. Following a program that is tailored to you has plenty of benefits: Ensures you're progressing through either increasing weight, number of reps, or a combination of both. Helps you to track your progress. We encourage our members to keep their old programs because it's gr...eat to look back and see how far you've come. Gets you in a routine with your training. When your motivation dwindles, it will be routine that keeps you in the gym. Ensures the work you're putting in at the gym is aligned with your goals. Takes the guesswork out of exercise selection so you don't have to think about what to do when you arrive at the gym. Got a question about programs? Pop it in the comments section.
02.01.2022 The Power Sisters are in full action with their preparation for the Para Powerlifting Nationals at the end of February in Brisbane. 6 weeks left till comp, and we will be following along with their preparation to keep you all updated. Let’s go girls! #heavymetalhorde #noFear #Pbtime #strongereveryday
02.01.2022 Heavy Metals will be closed on the Australia Day public holiday on January 26. But, we won’t be kicking back in the pool with a Great Northern in hand. Instead, we’ll be at the Get Active Expo at Jezzine Barracks spreading the word about Heavy Metals. If you’re in the area stop by and say hi
02.01.2022 It's been great to see everyone back in the gym after many of our members took a break over Christmas. The gym's been busy and everyone is working hard as they get back into their training programs. Troy put up a great fight to snag this 150kg bench. Herbert got himself a new squat PB at 115kg. Tania's starting her comeback after taking a break from strength training and comfortably pulled 60kg earlier this week.... Harry's back on the grind with a 210kg deadlift. See more
01.01.2022 172KG BENCH PRESS WORLD RECORD in the youth category (u18) 85kg weight class for James Oh!!! Very proud of how he handled himself under pressure here as you can see he had an issue with the rack height. Adjustments were made and left him with 10 seconds on the clock. It was a very tough prep for James. He was coming off an old aggravated back injury from another sport, which didn’t allow us to display our best performance in the squat and deadlift. Definitely faced some ...tough conditions on the platform, as the post-midday heat really picked up and took its toll Nonetheless we are over the moon about this massive achievement for young James, as he now finishes his final year as a youth lifter and moves into the junior category. Time to get completely healed up and head back to hard training. Watch for some big things in the junior category over the next 5 years from James! #heavymetalhorde #noFear #Pbtime #strongereveryday
