14.01.2022 Skin cancer during Covid pandemic (numbers don't lie) It's a long post (sorry for that) but a really important one. WA reported first case of Corona virus in early March and ever since our lives have been very different. We all have been scared/worried about ourselves and loved ones. Businesses closed down, flights grounded, playgrounds empty and any venture outside home was for essential requirements only. ... We did very well in flattering the curve. We at The Heights Medical and skin clinic - were open all during this time. We adapted to the need by providing phone/video conferencing; strict hygiene and social distancing. At Skin clinic, routine skin checks were postponed but high risk patients were still seen. Patients worried about some mole/lesion were still seen. Efudix review were done online. We launched a Bulk billed service where patients can send images online for review. In a nutshell- though we were open for business (with usual precautions of social distancing) we saw significant drop in patient contact. However, below is my data for last 3 months of skin cancer detected (tip of the iceberg) Melanoma- 4 Basal cell carcinoma- 35 Squamous cell carcinoma- 31 SUMMARY- skin cancer won't wait for pandemic to get over. You shouldn't wait either- get the skin check. It's safe and it's essential!

07.01.2022 I get asked very often- what's the difference between chemical and mineral sunscreen. So here it is Sunscreen ingredients fall into 2 distinct categories: mineral or chemical. ... Mineral sunscreens contain physical UV filters, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, that offer broad-spectrum UV coverage by reflecting or refracting UV radiation from skin. Chemical sunscreens contain UV filters that absorb UV radiation and, when used in combination, can provide equal if not superior broad-spectrum UV filtration compared with mineral sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens are less likely to leave chalky or tinted white residue on the skin, which is more cosmetically acceptable especially on darker skin types. Given these relative advantages, chemical sunscreens are found in the majority of commonly available sunscreen formulations
