24.01.2022 Congratulations to Ms B who has made it to 60 pieces in the 40 Pieces Challenge! Ms B tackled a while heap of chapters in the Piano Maestro journey, improving her sight reading, coordination and ensemble playing. We really admire her determination to develop her skills! Fantastic work, Ms B!

24.01.2022 Woohoo! Mr K has hit 150 pieces in the 40 Pieces Challenge! Mr K did some composing, learnt a bunch of Supersonics Piano pieces and kept working through his Piano Adventures Gold Star Performance book to get to this milestone. We think Mr K has the energy and commitment required to take over the world, so we are really glad he uses his powers to learn piano. Thank you to Mr J and his mum for sending through this great photo.

24.01.2022 It's Tuesday Tunes Day! Yesterday we shared with you a performance of Urangan Pier Sunset by Helen Perris. Today, here's Ms I playing the very same piece so that you can hear how individual interpretations can differ. Ms I takes this at a dreamy, slow tempo, lingering over the phrases. She is demonstrating beautifully controlled technique, and maturity in her expression with a developing ability to use subtlety in shaping and nuance in tone colour. This was a quick study piec...e for her, as she is working on Grade 2 and 3 level repertoire and this is a Preliminary piece. Lovely work, Ms I! Every Monday and Tuesday, we share student videos to celebrate their progress and successes. Please join us again next week for another fantastic student performance!

23.01.2022 Its Music Monday! Today, we are sharing a video from Mr D that he recorded at home. Pure Imagination from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is an iconic Bricusse and Newley song and we were really excited for Mr D to learn it for assessment in a film music unit at his school. He had the opportunity to explore chord extensions and jazz harmony through this piece. He also learned a lot about voicing and balance to create the exact sound that he wanted the audience to hear.... Its very cool watching this video back now, as it was filmed several months ago and Mr D has made huge headways with his technique and musicality since then. We cant wait to show you more of what he can do now! Every Monday and Tuesday, we share student videos to celebrate their growth and achievement. Join us again tomorrow for another awesome student performance!

21.01.2022 Wow! Ms I has hit 110 pieces in the 40 Pieces Challenge! Ms I is taking our Supersonics Piano transposition challenge very seriously, continuing to transpose multiple pieces into multiple keys. She is also building her skills through learning repertoire from Seventy Keyboard Adventures With the Little Monster. Shes pretty much unstoppable, and we love that!... Thank you to Ms I and her mum for sending this photo through!

21.01.2022 Ms Js outfits for her online lessons over the last term have ranged from op shop finds to handmade accessories to complete garments designed and made especially for the lesson - including a dress made of yellow garbage bags! Each week, Ms J entertains herself and us by creating a themed outfit and doing a big reveal at the start of each lesson. Her commitment to creativity is incredible! Can you guess which dresses Ms J made herself?

21.01.2022 I love how supportive and encouraging Brett and Eddy are here. But the most important takeaway from this video is how much you can improve in a short period of time with dedication to your practice!

21.01.2022 Congratulations to Mr G for getting to 150 pieces in our 40 Pieces Challenge for 2020! This is Mr G's third consecutive year of exceeding the 100 piece milestone, which has resulted in his excellent musicianship skills. To reach 150, he learned a handful of Preliminary Grade level pieces, some BlitzBooks Rote Repertoire, worked through some JoyTunes Piano Maestro, and transposed some film music into multiple keys. Fantastic effort, Mr G!

19.01.2022 Its Tuesday Tunes Day! We are currently featuring the amazing performances of our students who participated in the Gunnedah Eisteddfod Society Online Eisteddfod. Mr G did a fantastic job at the eisteddfod with a Highly Commended for both of his solos. This piece, Tango For Starters by Fiona Macardle, was the second solo he entered. It is from AMEB P Plate Book 3, and is an excellent study in the Habanera rhythm. Mr G did very well to demonstrate the differences in dynamic le...vel and the dance feel of the piece. We are very proud of him! We share student videos every Monday and Tuesday on our page. Make sure you like and follow us to get our awesome students in your newsfeed! See you next week for more student successes!

18.01.2022 Way to go, Mr G for getting to 110 pieces in the 40 Pieces Challenge this year! Mr G has been learning the last few AMEB P Plate Piano book 3 pieces as well as having fun with Piano Maestro and learning some cool film music. He is a voracious learner and is always looking for new music to read and play! His skills are really holding him in good stead, if his results at the recent online Eisteddfod are any measure.... We are so proud of you, Mr G! Keep up the amazing work!

18.01.2022 Vale Sonny Chua, a wonderful composer and generous human being. What a loss to the Australian music community. Lonesome Blues by Sonny Chua

16.01.2022 ***100 PIECES*** Congratulations to Ms I on getting to 100 pieces in our 40 Pieces Challenge! She looks pretty excited, dont you think? Ms I has been doing a fantastic job of learning many Supersonics Piano pieces in multiple keys, which is teaching her so many skills. She is also working through the second volume of Seventy Keyboard Adventures With the Little Monster.... We are so proud of how Ms I throws herself into every challenge and constantly surprises us in lessons. She is such a delight in the studio! You rock, Ms I!

16.01.2022 Its Music Monday! We have been sharing student videos from our archives every Monday, but after five and a half months of being online, this is our last video from in-person lessons! This is actually a video from late last year of Ms E playing the lovely Supersonics Piano piece, Ice Crystals. Ms E was set this piece as a big challenge and she really enjoyed tackling it. We love how the pedal, which usually adds warmth to a piano, adds a coldness to the atmosphere of this pie...ce. Ms E hasnt done a perfect performance here, but she has definitely risen to the challenge of learning a piece that stretches her ability. Great job, Ms E! Join us every Monday and Tuesday for more student videos!

16.01.2022 Congratulations to Ms J, who has reached 90 pieces in our 40 Pieces Challenge! Ms J has been smashing some Supersonics Piano pieces as quick studies, learning them completely independently. Shes continuing to work through the Exploring Grade One and Two books as well as using our Piano Safari resources. Her sight-reading is excellent and we are so impressed by how far she has come along in her playing. You rock, Ms J! Thanks for sending through this photo.

15.01.2022 Congratulations to Mr J and Mr S for hitting the 110 milestone in the 40 Pieces Challenge! The boys love their Supersonics Piano and have been working through Land of the Middle Seas as well as exploring transposition with some other pieces and playing duets. They have also been using the Piano Safari resources to develop their rhythm and sight-reading skills. They are also quite fond of a theory challenge! We are proud of you! Well done!

15.01.2022 Congratulations to Ms V and Ms N for reaching 40 pieces in the 40 Pieces Challenge! The sisters started learning piano in February to build their musicianship skills and enhance their knowledge and understanding of written music and music theory. They are both lovely singers and are lots of fun to teach! Theyve been learning mostly Supersonics Piano and BlitzBooks Rote Repertoire pieces to get to this point. Great work, girls!... Thanks for sending through this photo.

14.01.2022 How to be mindful in your practice.

13.01.2022 Congratulations to Ms V for reaching 50 pieces in our 40 Pieces Challenge for 2020! Ms V has been diligently working on her technique and improving her understanding of tonality and transposition through using both BlitzBooks Rote Repertoire pieces and Supersonics Piano pieces. She has also been using the JoyTunes Piano Maestro app to improve her sight-reading skills. Not bad at all for someone who has only had six months of lessons!... Great work, Ms V!

13.01.2022 Its Tuesday Tunes Day! We are so proud and excited to show you this incredible performance from Ms P that resulted in a perfect mark in her recent Con Brio Examinations vocal exam. Out Here On My Own from the movie, Fame, originally sung by Irene Cara and written by Gore & Gore, is a beautifully written and composed song that is not only technically challenging, but difficult to convey. Ms P nails it here. We are impressed by how hard she worked to achieve the appearance of ...ease in this song. The control of her registration changes, the beautiful legato phrasing and the authentic connection to the text make for a thoroughly engaging performance. The examiner decreed Ms Ps execution of this number to be faultless and we cannot disagree! Absolutely fabulous, Ms P! Every Monday and Tuesday, we share student videos to celebrate their growth and achievement. Join us again next week for another awesome student performance!

12.01.2022 Congratulations to the amazing Ms P who slayed her Grade 5 Vocal exam with Con Brio Examinations! With the exam being prepared pretty much entirely online, the High Distinction result was a well deserved reward for her incredible dedication and fabulous performances. Ms P, we are so proud of you and excited to see what is next for you!

12.01.2022 Its Music Monday! In this piece from our archives, Mr P demonstrates his pedalling skills! Fast Wave is from Seventy Keyboard Adventures with the Little Monster and is a great little study in broken chords and pedal technique. We enjoy Mr Ps even and steady playing and you can see how much his hand position and arm wieght has improved since the last video we shared a couple of weeks ago. Super effort, Mr P!... We share student videos from the archives every Monday and student submitted videos from home every Tuesday. Join us again tomorrow for more student successes.

11.01.2022 Congratulations to Ms I for getting to 90 pieces! Ms I has been learning her favourite Supersonics Piano pieces in multiple keys and has now started Volume 2 of Seventy Keyboard Adventures with the Little Monster, building new skills every week. We are super proud of her enthusiasm and diligence!... Thank you to Ms I and her mum for sending through this photo.

11.01.2022 It's Music Monday! Mr V has been flying like a supersonic jet through his My First Piano Adventures books: so fast that by the time you see this, we are certain he will have moved on to the next book! This is the Fabers' arrangment of Old McDonald Had A Farm, which they call Old Pig-Donald. Mr V is having a great time playing in an ensemble situation. You can hear him adapting to fit in with the teacher part, which shows how well his listening skills are developing. Way to go..., Mr V! We feature student submitted videos every Monday and Tuesday to celebrate their progress and achievements. Join us again tomorrow for another fabulous student performance!

11.01.2022 Congratulations to Ms I for getting to 140 pieces in our 40 Pieces Challenge! Ms I transposed a bunch of Supersonics Piano pieces, learnt several new pieces from Seventy Keyboard Adventures With The Little Monster as well as one from Piano Safari. Ms I has made incredible progress in her playing this year and deserves a round of applause! Splendid efforts, Ms I! And thanks to her mum for sending through this photo.

07.01.2022 HSC time! Congratulations to the awesome Ms H for doing a fabulous job in her HSC Music performance exam today. We are so proud of the way you have taken everything in your stride!

07.01.2022 Its Tuesday Tunes Day! Mr P embarked on a serious mission to tackle this piece, overcome its great challenges and return, victorious, with a video. And what an accomplishment! Hes A Pirate is the main theme from Pirates of the Caribbean and lasts a whole five pages - a massive undertaking for a young pianist. We are so proud of the way that Mr P treated this piece as a long term project, whittling away at it over a couple of months to extend his skills.... Great effort, Mr P! Every Monday and Tuesday, we share student videos to celebrate their growth and achievement. Join us again next week for another awesome student performance!

07.01.2022 Congratulations to Ms N on reaching 50 pieces in our 40 Pieces Challenge for this year! Ms N has been determined to improve her musicianship skills and has been using the JoyTunes Piano Maestro app to enhance her practice between lessons. Ms N is developing her technique and sight-reading skills with Supersonics Piano and BlitzBooks Rote Repertoire pieces. We are excited to see how quickly she is learning! Great work, Ms N!

07.01.2022 ***100 PIECES*** Congratulations to Mr G for reaching 100 pieces in the 40 Pieces Challenge for this year! Mr G continued to power through AMEB P Plate Piano book 3 and has also started working on pieces from Lynda Lybeck Robinsons An Awesome Adventure. He enjoys a wide range of music and is refining his skills in articulation and dynamic control. Mr G can read pretty much anything we put in front of him, and thats definitely due to our repertoire rich approach, as well as ...his diligence in practice. Fabulous effort, Mr G!

06.01.2022 ***100 PIECES*** Congratulations to Ms J who has reached the 100 pieces milestone in our 40 Pieces Challenge for 2020. Ms J is working on a variety of pieces including some Supersonics Piano quick studies, Piano Safari material, and AMEB Grade 1 through 3 level pieces in the Exploring grade books and Getting To grade books. We are so impressed with Ms Js incredible work ethic and her positive attitude in lessons. There is nothing this girl wont try in order to improve her p...ianism, even if she thinks Helens requests are ridiculous! Ms J is a superstar student and we are incredibly proud of her and her achievements! Way to go, Ms J!!

05.01.2022 Happy Wear it Purple Day! At HPMS, purple is more than just a colour. Purple is part of our brand and part of our core beliefs. Wear it Purple Day celebrates diversity, in particular the diversity of the LGBTQIA+ youth community. At HPMS, we recognise and celebrate our students who identify as part of the queer community. We acknowledge that they need safe spaces to be themselves while they learn and grow, and we are proud to provide a safe and supportive space for their cre...ative development. Today is Wear it Purple Day, but we are purple every day.

03.01.2022 Its Music Monday! Mr K demonstrates his ability to sing and play at the same time in this video with the Piano Adventures Gold Star Performance piece, I Found a Penny. Singing and playing together is so great for brain development as there is so much going on at once: coordination of both hands and the muscles of the mouth and tongue, proprioception, engagement of the language centre, pitch matching, rhythmic awareness, and much more! All these connections that are forged in... the brain help children to supercharge their learning and have far reaching positive effects according to new scientific research. Mr K is also clearly having a great time singing to his younger brother, whose arm makes an appearance in this video! Thanks for sharing, Mr K (and family!). We are proud of your efforts! Every Monday and Tuesday, we share student videos to celebrate their growth and achievement. Join us again tomorrow for another awesome student performance!

03.01.2022 Helen answers "How do I know where or how to start when I practise?"

02.01.2022 Helen answers the question "How can I stay motivated to practise every day?"

02.01.2022 Helen answers one of the most common questions from student families: how do we get them to practise without nagging?

01.01.2022 Friends of HPMS in Canberra should grab their tickets for this concert with Simon Tedeschi and Sally Walker, Flautist presented by ACT Keyboard Association. How lovely to get to see live music again! #supportlivemusic

01.01.2022 It's Tuesday Tunes Day! Ms A has been working on her pair slurs through Anita Milne’s The Last Leaves of Autumn. Ms A is showing beautiful musicality and quality of sound through her pair slurs. This piece is from the AMEB P Plate Piano series. Did you notice the iPad at the end of the piano? Have a listen and see if you can hear the magical echoes while Ms A plays this piece, caused by the sympathetic resonance of the strings freed by holding those keys down.... Well done, Ms A! We feature student submitted videos every Monday and Tuesday to celebrate their progress and achievements. Join us again next week for another fabulous student performance!

01.01.2022 **** 200 PIECES **** Congratulations to our record breaker, Mr K! He is the first of our students (and perhaps even the first in the world!) to get to 200 pieces in a twelve month period as part of the 40 Pieces Challenge!... Mr K rounded out his 200 pieces with some Supersonics Piano pieces from The Land of the Middle Seas and some of the Piano Adventures Gold Star Performance Primer and Level 1 books. We are so proud of how diligently, Mr K worked, especially during lockdown. Thanks to his family for sending through these great photos! Mr K's younger brother couldn't help but get involved in the celebrations, which is super adorable! We made a special metallic gold certificate for this momentous occasion. You are incredible, Mr K! Well done!! This is the final one of our photos from the 2020 challenge. Stay tuned for updates on the 2021 challenge as the students start to hit their goals.
