18.01.2022 LOOKING AT JO HOLLIER’S PRINTS Jo Hollier is a full time artist/printmaker based in Canberra, ACT. Her studio is a the Straithnairn Arts Association on the edge of the city. . Jo says, drawing is the basis of her art making. Ideas for prints are born from original sketches. In Insectarium, Jo has two wonderfully graphic lino prints. .... In Honey Bee, rows of black and white bees are printed over a background of yellow dots which mic might suggest honeycomb. . In Bombus Terrestris, a lino print of native plants visited by bees in a central panel is framed by a row of bees top and bottom. . The beauty of prints is of course that there can be more than one print, usually in limited editions. There two prints are A/P - Artist's proof the first print and so crisp and clear. . Jo says, even though she loves to paint and collage, printmaking is the core of her work. . It is evident in these prints, their simplicity and beauty, that printmaking is a passion. 15.01.2022 Gallery welcomes entomologists Our current exhibition, Insectarium, has had entomologists from near and far visiting the gallery to enjoy the sight of so many bees, beetles, wasps, butterflies, bugs and caterpillars, all so skilfully painted by the seven exhibiting artists Nicola Dickson, Liz Faul, Cheryl Hodges, Jo Hollier, Tanya Hoolihan, Peter Marsack and Bessie Nunes. . I am happy to report that we have had good sales. With one more week to go there is still a chance to... visit and walk away with one of these beautiful paintings. It is also an opportunity to purchase a Nicola Dickson painting. This established and highly regarded Canberra artist recently had a sell out exhibition at Beaver Galleries, ACT. We are honoured to have her exhibiting in Insectarium curated by Cheryl Hodges. Cheryl is a natural history artist painting plants and insects beautifully rendered in watercolour. As a teacher of botanical and insect illustration in Canberra and online, she has a large following and we have enjoyed the many conversations about insects and how to illustrate them. www.cherylhodges.com/workshops . Tanya Hoolihan has impressive qualifications as Doctor of Natural History Illustration from Newcastle University, Callaghan and was awarded the Faculty Award for Research Higher Degree, the University Medal and Faculty of Science and IT Medal. 04.01.2022 RED DOT DAY A big thanks to Matilda Dumas’ brave and generous friends who rugged up to attend the opening of her exhibition, Tablelands, last Sunday. . Following Covid-19 precautions, a few people at a time were able to take their time to enjoy the paintings and decide on a purchase while others braved the cold and caught up with friends around the firepit with a glass of wine. .... On these cold and blustery days, Matilda’s paintings, landscapes and the camellia series, are like a bright sunny day, particularly the Tablelands landscapes viewed from Matilda’s window. With the wet season these verdant landscapes capture time and place. . The camellia series are a delight, painted with such confidence and are a promise of summer days. The red dots went up quickly on these paintings but there are still some available to purchase. . Exhibition continues until September 13. .
