06.01.2022 Today in 1941 the airborne invasion of the island of Crete began at the hands of the Nazi Germans. The 12 days following, the island had to be ...defended by the Greek and Allied forces alongside Cretan civilians defended the island and their homes. The island seemed to be a small and insignificant, an easy conquer for the Nazis, however there were heavy loss and an unexpected resistance. The strength and fight against the Nazis altered the course of history. Historians till this day refer to the Battle of Crete as a turning point of World War II, ultimately changing the outcome of the war. More than 1,700 British, Commonwealth and Greek soldiers were killed and 15,000 captured during the Battle of Crete. 671 New Zealanders were among those killed and 2,180 were taken prisoners of war. We thank and will always remember those who sacrificed so much, including the ANZACs, Commonwealth forces and of course our Cretan ancestors. As the Cretan Federation of Australia & New Zealand, we commemorate the lives lost by Greeks and Cretans, and of course the ANZACs to ensure their memory is not forgotten. ! !
