08.01.2022 It's a sign! - Thanks to the Conservation and Hunting Alliance of South Australia (CHASA) and the Hellenic Shooting Sports Club, traversing around Tolderol is n...ow much easier for new visitors with the recent production and installation of Bay signage for the reserve! Article provided by CHASA. The Conservation and Hunting Alliance of SA, (CHASA), has had a significant involvement in the revitalisation of the Tolderol Game Reserve since its recovery from the 2010 drought. The hunting community is committed to conservation and restoration of habitat and therefore was keen to be involved in this very worthwhile project. The drought saw the area totally devastated and the infrastructure derelict. CHASA, local landholders in the area and other conservation groups have been restoring and improving the area so that it is now an icon site for migratory waders and other waterbirds. CHASA has taken a lead role in this and instigated the "Farewell to the Waders" lunch event which has become a local must do. So far, with the help of CHASA celebrity chef, Andrew Fielke, and local producers we have raised $20,000 which has gone directly into projects to increase habitat for the migratory waders and other birds. This has allowed a number of additional bays to be flooded and it became apparent that signage was needed to number the bays to assist people to navigate around the site and to be able to go directly to areas of interest. Some four years ago this issue was raised at the Tolderol Game Reserve Working Group meetings and in 2019 CHASA delegate Patrick Torrens and local landholder Anna Peek decided to just do it! CHASA thought that we should assist in the project and use the money raised at the "Farewell to Waders Lunch 2019" in a spirit of goodwill. CHASA gave $1,413.50 for the signs and member group Hellenic Shooting Sports led by Phillip Papaioannou found a further $800 for the posts, caps, screws etc. Patrick and Anna sorted the signs and jumped the innumerable hurdles to get the job done and set a date for the working bee. Sunday, 27th of September, CHASA and Hellenic Shooting Sports Club saw some 30 volunteers come along, divide into groups and get to work. Sam Hardy, Joseph Gallasch and Peter Koch marked the location of the signs and "Hey Presto" by exactly lunchtime four years of talking and negotiation had finally been realised and the bays are now numbered! Local identity, and Tolderol Game Reserve Working Group member, Chris Eckert provided a roast lunch along with the Hellenic's Greek BBQ and CHASA's nibbles, salads, desserts everyone celebrated and we all admired the signs as the sun set on a great event. A big thank you to all the volunteers. Your help was very much appreciated.
