South bound to Victoria after completing a six-week campaign removing some 127 tons of marine debris from BC’s coast as part of the MDRI (Marine Debris Removal Initiative) the Maple Leaf Adventures ship ‘Maple Leaf’ was surrounded by Pacific White-sided dolphins riding her bow wake for over an hour! 08.01.2022 Explore BC with Locals: Meet @lorenzailenia! "We are Lorenza and Ilenia, we moved to Vancouver in 2017 from Italy. We love travelling around BC and every day-off or long weekend is a good excuse to visit a new placeour favourite BC spots: Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast. This summer we planned a 10-day trip to all the places we didn’t have the chance to visit yet. This trip was our honeymoon, we eloped in Tofino and then we started our adventure! Here are our favouri...te places. The colourful community of Coombs can’t go unnoticed. At Old Country Market - Goats on Roof, you can find local fruits, baked treats, restaurant dining but also shop for unique gifts, beautiful clothing and linen. We decided to try homemade gelato from Billy Gruff's Creamery. Everything about their store made us feel at home. Our trip continued to Strathcona Provincial Park, just past Comox Valley. It was simply astonishing. We stopped for short hikes looking at waterfalls and panoramas. At the end of Buttle Lake, you can see the calm of the lake surrounded by mountains and its creeks that flow into it. Next was Telegraph Cove, British Columbia, a small village with colourful buildings full of character. The village is on Johnstone Strait and a large number of orcas and whales spend summer there. We booked a tour with Prince of Whales Whale Watching and it was such a great experience! We spotted harbour porpoises, orcas and two humpback whales. We’ll never forget the emotions we felt that day. Desolation Sound is a deep-water sound with an archipelago of 82 islands and we took a tour with Terracentric Coastal Adventures to learn more about it. The water is calm and quiet and it lives up to its name of "Desolation Sound". We spotted a variety of sea stars, sea cucumbers, anemones and many harbour seals. We ended our adventure in Savary Island, a little piece of paradise. A 15-minute water taxi from Lund and you can enjoy white sand beaches, warm waters and spectacular mountain views. Beautiful cliffs with the forest on top, an empty beach and sandpipers looking for food in the crystal water. We couldn’t ask for a better way to end our honeymoon." 04.01.2022 Explore BC with Locals: Meet Tarynn Liv Parker from Lake Country! "I was born and raised in the Okanagan Valley, and I call every community here home, but most recently I have been living in Lake Country, where my fiancée makes wine. This place is in my blood, and I love to share the incredible experiences of our region so I have written and produced 3 books on Okanagan Living, wine and hospitality. Enjoy this two-day adventure in beautiful Lake Country! Day 1: Rent electric ...bikes at Pedego Electric Bikes Oyama, then plan your routes on the Okanagan Rail Trail, around Wood Lake or up the blue green waters of Kalamalka Lake, or both! Stop at the countless beach accesses along the way to take in views or have a dip in the lakes. Wrap up the day with authentic Neapolitan pizza and pasta at Pane Vino Pizzeria pair with quintessential Italian cocktails like an aperol spritz, or finish with a true Italian home style rum baba. Don’t miss out on the meatballs either. Day 2: Morning hike up Spion Kop Mountain on the well-marked trails and catch views of four of Okanagan’s lakes! You’ll see why the place is called Lake Country. You'll want to work up an appetite for an afternoon on the wine route. Start at Arrowleaf Cellars to enjoy a wine picnic at lunch. Taste aromatic wines then pick your favourites to enjoy by the glass in their gorgeous green, view-drenched picnic area. Pair with picnic snacks from their tasting room or bring your own (I grab mine from Farmers’ Fruit and Produce). Head down to the beach at Okanagan Centre Park to stretch your legs or take a dip in the lake, then make your way down the road to 50th Parallel Estate Winery / BLOCK ONE Restaurant for award-winning wines. Tip: don’t miss the Reserve Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and the Bubbles. Pair with tasty cuisine in the stunning architectural setting of the tasting room and outdoor patio that’s surrounded by vines and breathtaking views. Make reservations for the dining experience! To cap off the trip: a stop at Turtle Bay Liquor Store is a must for taking home some of your favourite Okanagan wines. PS. They’ve got a great craft beer selection. Cheers!"
