25.01.2022 Having recently undergone a facelift, Imago Bakery & Patisserie is now open again from their Elizabeth Street café to serve up their famous bread and other tasty goodies. We sat down with owner May to discover what has changed and what we can expect from this new look and feel café. We always wanted to reopen the café, but then Covid-19 hit and that really forced us to step back and plan what we wanted this to look like. We have since created a new cosy vibe and more of a fo...cus on a café-style menu alongside some of our favourites, says May. Imago’s house-baked bread is known and loved around Hobart, with it featuring on the menu in at many quality cafes and restaurants throughout the city. You can now buy it direct from the bakery, with a selection of their popular sourdough loaves. May recommends the seeded loaf, mixed with nigella seeds which give it a sharp warm flavour. Simply add a bit of butter and you are set. The favourite on the breakfast menu is the Eggplant Shakshouka, but we also offer all sort of treats including a Scattered Caramel French Croissant which is a bit indulgent and delightful. People will be pleased to know that Hobart favourites such as the Raspberry Chocolate Croissant are now available again too With Easter coming up, we highly recommend you get your hands on one of their sourdough Hot Cross Buns. Loaded with fruit, and sweetened with pureed orange and ginger rather than sugar. Be quick as they sell out fast (we were in early and they were already sold out for the day), it’s highly recommend you make a pre-order particularly for larger quantities. Café Manager Jack made us a coffee whilst we talked and it was just what we needed. A shot of perfectly poured coffee from a Melbourne roaster. The team here are fabulous, Jack is great as our manager and the bakers out the back are so dedicated to what they do, says May. May’s story into Imago is inspiring. After working in financial management for years, she decided it was time for a change and decided to go back to study at culinary school as she had always had a passion for food. Her teacher ended up being Dave, who hailed from Tasmania, and the two of them came up with the idea to move to Hobart and start a quality bakery as business partners. Dave has since moved on but May remains passionate for the business.. A small business is a lot of hard work and sacrifice. But when you get people coming into your bakery saying that the bread is as good as anything they have had in Europe, well that makes everything worthwhile Imago is located at 114 Elizabeth Street and open 7 am 3 pm daily (menu food is served from 7.45 am onwards).
25.01.2022 Next stop on our journey to discover Hobart’s restaurants, cafes and bars is Tricycle Cafe and Bar. Tricycle café sits amongst the Salamanca Arts Centre, offering up all day breakfast and light lunches. The breakfast menu is a fan favourite and you can’t go past the Tricycle Big Breakfast with eggs done your way, served with bacon rashers, chorizo, grilled tomato, smashed avocado, sautéed mushrooms, wilted spinach and relish. The fresh juices are also a big hit to partner wit...h any breakfast choice. Using free range eggs in all of their dishes, they are big advocates of also using local ingredients wherever possible. They are licensed and offer a selection of Tasmanian beers, ciders and wines. There is a great community in Salamanca with so many creative minds and there is always something new happening in the Salamanca Arts Centre, says owner Sally. This delightful cafe is open Monday to Saturday, 8:30 am - 4 pm and located within the Salamanca Arts Centre at 77 Salamanca Place, Battery Point. Tricycle Cafe is part of the Passport to Hobart program, where you can collect a stamp on your passport after making an eligible purchase of over $20. Once you have five stamps, you will be rewarded with a $20 voucher to spend back at participating venues. For a full list of where you can grab your stamps, visit hellohobart.com.au/passport.
24.01.2022 If you love Japanese-inspired food, you’re in for a treat! Wafu Sushi is Centrepoint Shopping Centre's ‘go-to’ sushi destination, with unique sushi flavours on offer like falafel sushi, your taste buds will be amazed and will leave you craving more! The creative sushi genius behind this space is Kazzer. With many other sushi places in Hobart, Kazzer wanted to offer something different for the Hobart community. You’ll find your traditional white rice sushi rolls, with some un...ique twists like the sweet chilli mango prawn. What is particularly special at Wafu are the various black rice sushi rolls available, which are all vegan! The flavour combos are definitely different to what you might expect, but they sure do amaze. There are flavours such as falafel avocado, mango beetroot, and pumpkin croquette. We were very impressed to hear that Kazzer makes his own vegan mayo in house. ‘You have to use your heart to make sushi. We use local ingredients as much as possible and then inject the Japanese style into that’, says Kazzer. Aside from sushi you’ll find Japanese salads (think spicy miso peanut soba noodle and cucumber wakame salad), nigiri, Japanese fried chicken (which is gluten free), bento boxes (hot and cold options) and many more delicious eats will likely make their way to the menu, as Kazzer is constantly thinking of new creations. They even do catering! Kazzer’s top pick is the tempura veggie and chipotle spicy tofu. We tried the falafel avocado, which left us wanting more, with a nutty taste from the black rice and the falafel surprisingly worked! Kazzer graduated as a graphic designer in Melbourne and while he didn’t pursue a career in that industry, his creative skills have come in handy with designing the logo and the art of putting the sushi together. ‘I prefer Japanese cooking because sushi is similar to graphic design for me. Sushi is food, but it is more like art, you need to think about how you are going to present it to the customer.’ Who is hungry for sushi? Make Wafu Sushi your next lunch or snack destination and discover all the amazing flavours on offer. Find them opposite Dymocks in Centrepoint.
24.01.2022 Do you have 'buy present' on your to-do list right now? Maybe you want to send your Melbourne friends and family a little something to cheer them up? Or maybe you want to get a little gift to simply say you are thinking of someone. It doesn’t need to be big, just keep it local. The Red Parka Shop in Criterion Street is the perfect place to do just that. Of particular note are the amazing puzzles that are ideal for that house plant lover, rock enthusiast or jellyfish fan. ... Need something a bit lighter to send interstate? The team have just restocked their range of Stalley purses. You’ll find creatures from wombats to Tassie Devils, all handmade and in a heap of colours. And we couldn’t help but smile at the ‘social distancing expert’ pin. A nod to 2020! There is so much to explore at Red Parka, chances are you will come out buying more than what you went in for! Now to get started on the puzzle we couldn't help but add to our expanding collection You will find Red Parka at 22 Criterion Street, Hobart.
23.01.2022 The newest store on the city block is The Finders, a collaboration space that brings together Heaven Vintage, Vintage Stallion, Freya Flavell and Hiatus Store. Impressively, this team came together with the store in just two and a half weeks. They have created a space that is full of vintage and second-hand gems with pieces to suit your unique style. We sat down with the wonderful owners who make up this collab, Bec, Hayleigh, Freya and Linda. This store was born out of COVI...Continue reading
23.01.2022 Hidden in a hole-in-the-wall style café, is Ed's Spuntino , where they celebrate all things coffee and delicious Italian inspired creations. After a soft opening due to Covid, they are now in full swing and are Hobart’s authentic, ‘hidden’ Italy, right down to the unique Italian coffee machine, the first of its kind in Tassie! Hello Hobart sat down with owner Ed and chatted all about his new venture. Ed’s background is far from the hospitality scene; he originally was in wei...ghtlifting. We were impressed to hear that in 2017 he was on the Australian team for the junior world championships and went to Tokyo. ‘I was training Olympic style weightlifting full-time and then I injured my elbow. So I needed something to do, so I decided to get into this café’. And the rest is history, so to speak. The space is something quite special, with an open plan kitchen and sitting area. It feels as though you are sitting at the table of your friends or family, at home, enjoying a meal, smiling, sharing a laugh. Ed was attracted to the space because of its old-fashioned, sandstone feel. He has created a lovely, inviting space, where you feel right at home. For those of you that need your morning caffeine fix, Ed’s Spuntino have your back, with coffee being made from 6.15am. The delicious array of treats and menu items on offer are not to be missed. We arrived to fresh lasagna being made by chef Pete, Ed’s dad (we even learnt a few lasagna making tips!). The food is Italian style, simply because Ed loves Italian food (same here Ed!). The name Spuntino is Italian for ‘smaller plates / little snacks’. You’ll find delicious cakes and treats as well as breakfast and lunch options on the menu such as bacon and egg rolls, smashed avocado on sourdough, minestrone, carbonara, and a meatball roll, with new creations making their way to the menu soon. Their menu is flexible, meaning if you have an Italian favourite that is not on the menu, such as tiramisu, they will most likely be able to make it for you, how great is that?! (With advanced notice of course.) Ed’s menu favourites are the beef meatballs and Italian pork sausage slow cooked in a tomato sauce served with penne. It was great to hear that everything, aside from the bread, is made on site, and better still, everything is cooked to order (pasta included). They are open for dinner by reservation - simply get in touch. If you enjoy a glass of wine or gin, be sure to have a look at the Tassie and Italian offerings. What’s better than a bowl of pasta and a glass of red?! Find them cooking up a storm and brewing coffee at 129 Bathurst Street, 7 days a week.

21.01.2022 ‘We want small town mentality, but in a big(ish) city.’ This is the ethos of Friendly Care Advantage Hobart as they ‘break the mold’ of your typical pharmacy. Placing an emphasis on supporting the local Hobart community through health and wellbeing, this pharmacy is a not-for-profit, meaning profits are given to those who need it the most. ... Hello Hobart sat down with general manager Matthew and CBD store manager Michael to discover all about how this small place is doing big things. Did you know that the Hobart Friendly Society has actually been around since 1883? It was formed as part of the old Zinc Works and the Hobart Friendly Society provided subsidised medical treatments and medications to workers. Today they continue to support the community. Profits from all three Friendly Care Pharmacies (Hobart, New Town and Moonah) are donated to various, like-minded charities in and around Hobart. ‘The most fulfilling thing about this job is knowing that you can see where our profits go to. I have been fortunate enough to be able to see where the Friendly Society is giving support to’, Matt told us. Charities that have received donations include Colony 47, City Mission, Vinnie’s Men’s Shed, and Southern Cross Care. ‘I think we all get satisfaction to know that you come to work, do your job and get that extra level of fulfillment from it’, says Matt. Being a service pharmacy, they want to give the local Hobart community high-quality service, health information and support. They will go that extra mile with service, whether that is remembering your name, taking the time to chat with you, or delivering something to you if circumstances prevent you from visiting the city with their free local delivery. ‘Our delivery man has been everywhere!’ Anyone can sign up to become a member of Hobart Friendly Care Pharmacy and it’s free! You’ll receive great benefits, such as accumulating points that you can use in store, vouchers and access to health services. ‘We have some wonderful regulars in our pharmacies. There are some people that have been members for decades. Some of which still hold onto their original membership cards that are falling apart’, laughs Michael. Next time you are in need of pharmacy advice or products, you’ll know where to go. You will not only receive personal, friendly service, but you will also be supporting your local community. Find them on the corner of Liverpool and Criterion streets.
21.01.2022 You may have been to Institut Polaire in the past, but this cold-climate kitchen, wine and cocktail haunt has just reopened after a little hiatus and has some exciting news to share. Embracing Tasmania’s status as a gateway to Antarctica, this bar has a new team worthy of celebrating, including one of Hobart’s most loved chefs, Vlad Panevin, heading up the kitchen. Vlad is a former Ettie’s kingpin after making a name for himself with the likes of Templo, Franklin and Smolt. T...his team is complete with other well-known faces, both in the kitchen and on the floor, to welcome and look after you. What can you expect from the menu? Featuring ethically-sourced produce from local Tasmanian growers, fishers and farmers, you will find native angasi oysters, handmade pasta dishes like rabbit ragu silk handkerchief, as well as stripey trumpeter sashimi and house-cured salumi. You can simply drop in for a drink and a couple of plates or settle in for dinner with the chef’s menu. Institut Polaire also has a strong cocktail game and is the home of Australia’s best small wine list (100 wines) in Australia’s Wine List of the Year Awards. Discover a fantastic selection of cold-climate styles, many of them cult producers like Ganevat, Raveneau, Keller, Gut Oggau and Dujac, alongside Tasmanian heroes. Masterfully-crafted cocktails draw on classic roots inspired by Tasmanian flavours like smoked applewood salt, leatherwood honey and mountain pepperberry bitters. Institut Polaire is also the cellar door for highly sought Süd Polaire gin and Domaine Simha wine. The full range is available for drinking and sales at cellar door prices. You can also book a gin or wine tasting experience or martini masterclass accompanied by a cheese platter to share on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Institut Polaire was established by Louise and winemaker Nav. These two came to Tasmania in 2012, lured by the cold climate. They led a natural approach to winemaking with Domaine Simha, while also creating Süd Polaire spirits. You will find Institut Polaire at 7 Murray Street, open Thursday to Sunday from 4 pm. Bookings are highly recommended and can be made at www.institutpolaire.com.au : thanks to Institut Polaire

19.01.2022 Meet Victor Tilley. Many of you would know Victor as the previous owner of Red Herring Surf for nearly 20 years. We got the low down from Victor about what he planned on doing in his trip to the city. ‘Today I am off to yoga at Equalise. This is a wonderful space, full of great people and so nice to be able to walk in, get greeted with a smile and relax.... I am then going to call into Mountain Creek Outdoors, right near Equalise. This is a true local independent outdoor store, full of heaps of stuff. Around the corner in Elizabeth Street is my favourite record store, Tommy Gun Records. We are very lucky to have this here as I believe it is as good as any I have been to anywhere. Lots of new releases, 2nd hand, band tees, record players and my favourite - the $5 bargain bins where you never know what you will find! Just up the street from Tommy Gun is Ken Self Cycle Centre, so I always pop in there. I do a lot of mountain biking and these guys keep me rolling. Any trip to town is not complete without calling into Staple coffee in Bidencopes Lane. Phil and the team here offer consistently good coffee and homemade treats. Hobart is a fantastic city, not too big and not too small, full of wonderful people and stores.’ As a local, Victor tell us he has many ‘go to’ places. ‘I also love Coterie & Co., it is hidden in a laneway off Liverpool St (next to the Vodafone building) and it is an absolute gem, good food all day. Their zucchini fritters are my favourite, but there’s plenty of other options. Kosta and Norma run this place, well Norma does all the work and Kosta takes the credit! Corner of Liverpool and Harrington street’s you’ll find Quantum AV & HiFi. This has been around for almost 50 years and is a true specialist store. If you want to listen to music how it should be heard, this is the place to do it. And finally, Red Herring Surf. Yes I may be biased here, but this is where I go to for all my surfing needs.’ And what is Victor’s favourite thing about Hobart? ‘The people. Without a doubt there are some fantastic crew in all our Hobart stores and they all have the same mission, to help you get what you want. It is so nice to call in and meet them, build up relationships with them and let them help you do your shopping.’
19.01.2022 Located on Campbell Street, tucked away on the ground floor of the fancy new K block of the Royal Hobart Hospital is Pounds + Ounces Royal Hobart Hospital. A spacious café, this place is not only ideal if you are visiting a loved one in hospital but is open to the public and perfect to stop in with offerings for breakfast, lunch and snack times in-between. Hello Hobart sat down with manager Pete to chat about what you can expect from this new cafe on the block (get it, K bloc...k!). We offer your usual suspects made fresh onsite daily including sandwiches, wraps, smoothies and we make a great coffee, says Pete. Customer's favourite pick at Pounds & Ounces is the Tradie Breakfast Bun for breakfast or the Chicken Swiss Turkish toastie for lunch. The Chicken Swiss is also Pete’s personal fave, and despite him trying to branch out every day, it’s the one he enjoys time and time again. Pete highly recommends we download the Pounds & Ounces app which allows you to order online whilst also earning you loyalty points. In the same space you will find Green Panda Sushi, also operated by Pete and his team. This space is more dedicated to lunch and offers everything from sushi, sushi bowls and hot food such as chicken katsu. The team are happy to accommodate allergies and offer a wide variety of gluten-free and vegan options. Pete and his wife are both dedicated to their business, with Pete’s wife busily preparing the food from 4.30 am. They both have a history in hospitality working together for the past 40 years. We have never even had an argument at work. We work together really well, says Pete fondly of his wife. Open Monday to Friday, you can find the team located on the ground floor of K Block which is on the Campbell Street side of the RHH.
19.01.2022 We were truly impressed by our recent visit to Tesoro Hobart, Hobart’s newest restaurant located in the recently opened Mövenpick Hotel Hobart. A modern Italian restaurant offering a small intimate dining location to suit everything from a romantic midweek date through to friends gathering for dinner on the weekend. The name, meaning ‘treasure’, is an ode to the calibre of Tasmanian food which they are offering up to guests. And you will certainly walk away from your experien...ce feeling like a treasured guest. Hello Hobart sat down with Executive Chef Trent to discover more. Tasmania truly is the food bowl of Australia, says Trent. As a well-travelled chef, working throughout cities and countries worldwide, you can tell that Trent really knows what he is taking about. We work with some of the best producers here in the restaurant. Take our fish and seafood for example. We head down to the docks as soon as the Mures Tasmania boat, the Diana, comes in. We take our pick of the seafood straight off the boat. You really cannot do that anywhere else This phenomenal restaurant offers a friendly front-of-house team to match. From the moment you walk in the door, you are greeted by smiling staff who make you feel like you have arrived as part of their family. What can you expect from the menu? The hero on the menu is truly the grill. The cuts here hail from Cape Grim Tasmanian Natural Beef and are dry aged in-house. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, you will also find daily handmade pasta and pizza with a 14-hour fermented sourdough base. And for those of you who love a chef’s menu like us, they offer the Chef’s Roadtrip, a way to truly taste your way around Tasmania by trying the outstanding local produce. Trent will ensure that you get to try the very best of what Tesoro has to offer. Hello Hobart tried the pasta, because we have a weak spot for handmade pasta alongside the grilled asparagus (with black garlic, parmesan, poached egg and truffle oil). Needless to say, there wasn’t much leftover. This team truly does cook with passion and as a little bonus, you can finish your meal with a house-made limoncello (non-alcoholic). This little palate cleanser is simply delightful and made in-house using the peels of the lemons and limes used in the kitchen. This writer managed to score two and I have to admit, the afternoon was a real food high and we will be back. Bookings are highly recommended and they are open lunch and dinner 7 days.

These donuts are made with the signature sourdough that LH are known for and then packed with currents, citrus and spices. The large donuts are then filled with vanilla custards or chocolate ganache and topped with candied orange. We aren’t going to lie the team here are extra excited to try thes...e. An Easter staple, the Pigeon Whole Bakers Hot Cross Buns are also back. Just look at the glaze on these ones. These traditional buns are full of fruit and spices, and you can buy them in a six pack or singles for a little treat. Pre-orders close 5 pm Tuesday of course, if you are quick they have fresh ones daily in-store for purchase. What is better than bagels from Bury Me Standing? Hot Cross Bagels! 18.01.2022 Now that the weather is getting warmer and the days longer, there are more and more people getting out and about in the city. We thought it time to celebrate some of our amazing Hobart community and discover their secrets to a trip into Hobart. First up, meet the delightful Laura Tilley Marketer, Meditation Teacher & Creative, who shares with us what a day in the city looks like for her. First stop for me today is visiting Brooke at Sunbear. Brewed chai and chai cake is an... ultimate combo that I never thought was possible. I’ll then head down to Fullers Bookshop to pick up a new book and browse the endless titles for inspiration. From there it’s to a yoga class at Alceme Hobart or an indulgent session at The Sanctuary at Alceme downstairs, that building is something else. I always enjoy visiting Adam at Tommy Gun Records to pick up some new vinyl to play at home, and popping next door to Teros to browse their incredible collection of eco-friendly goods. From there it’s to The Floral Criteria to gift myself with some flowers, Collide Wholefoods to stock up on peanut butter and Goulds Natural Medicine to pick up some more of my favourite tea before heading home. I love running into people on the street that I haven’t seen in a while, it’s always nice to re-connect. The community and connection you get in Hobart is rarely found. Now it’s even more special spending a Saturday and popping in to all my favourite stores and having good conversation with those friends about business and life while experiencing or purchasing a product or service.
18.01.2022 This Friday, make your way down to Midtown (Elizabeth Street between Melville & Warwick Streets) for the annual Park(ing) Day. See parking spots transformed into pop-up parklets (think mini-movable parks). Come down for your morning coffee or come and eat your lunch, play games and talk with friends. There are a number of businesses who are supporting this exciting initiative including faves The Stagg, Island Espresso, CWA Gift Shop, Hobart, Tasmania, The Crows Nest, Shoebox ...Cafe and Tasmanian Young Planners. 8 am to 8 pm - it is predicted to be a beautiful sunny day too
17.01.2022 It’s Sunday! So it is time for brunching out in the city. Our top tip for today is a visit to Basket & Green. The friendly face behind Basket & Green is Priyanka. As she explains to us, Basket & Green is casual dining for breakfast, brunch, lunch, coffees and just catching up with family and friends. It’s a welcoming space with delicious food. The pancakes at Basket & Green are not to be missed and make for a perfect Sunday with both a sweet and savoury range depending on ho...w you feel. Priyanka’s favourite is the feta spinach pancake. The Hello Hobart team’s recommendation would be the rosti. Think sweet potato and potato rosti served with mushroom, spinach, tomato and a poached egg. With all this beautiful warm weather in Hobart right now, if you are wanting a change from hot coffee, you must try the citrus iced tea or iced coffee. Perfect for a perk up on this sunny day. Open Sundays until 12.30pm and weekdays until 2 pm. Basket & Green is part of the Passport to Hobart program, where you can collect a stamp on your passport after making an eligible purchase of over $20. Once you have five stamps, you will be rewarded with a $20 voucher to spend back at participating venues. For a full list of where you can grab your stamps, visit hellohobart.com.au/passport.
15.01.2022 We sat down with Liberty, owner of the hottest new store in the city, Libertyemma collections. Liberty Emma has been a Tasmanian-owned small businesses for 7 years but Liberty has recently taken the brave leap into opening up a storefront to be more connected to the Hobart community. ‘Throughout lockdown, the isolation was really hard and it was at this time that I got to pause and reflect. It was then I decided to open up a store’, says Liberty.... The store radiates elegance with collections of beautiful leather bags, wallets, sterling silver jewellery, homewares and fragrances. Liberty designs all of the leather work herself, designing items that are timeless pieces. The items are then all handmade in a variety of locations from ethically sourced leather. ‘Dad was a leather worker, working here and overseas. He taught me so much when I began working with leather. This work allows me to be creative again and I simply adore it’. Many of the pieces here are lifetime pieces, as Liberty explains, the new range of leather jackets (launched this week!) are designed to last 20 or so years. ‘They are pieces that hopefully you can pass onto the next generation. Through covid people have become a lot more conscious of not only buying locally but also buying ethically and this is a large part of my ethos here’. We are pleased to announce that Liberty Emma is also about to be the exclusive stockist of Grown Alchemist products here in Hobart. These non-toxic, vegan, cruelty-free products use certified organic ingredients. A passion for Liberty is supporting working mums, outside of her own leather collection the store is stocked with products sourced from Australian brands run by mums. ‘I want to encourage support for mum’s who are trying their hand at owning businesses, I know how tough it can be’. Liberty tells us that she loves having a store and being part of the business community in Hobart. ‘I just adore being surrounded by fellow retailers and restaurants, it is such a friendly community here in Hobart’. This beautiful store is open 10 am to 4 pm, Tuesday through to Sunday. Located at 101 Murray Street, opposite the Chemist Warehouse. A perfect trip on a Sunday after a Farm Gate Market visit.
15.01.2022 Wow. This is the word to describe Sisterhood Hobart This stylish café located on King Street in Sandy Bay certainly has had its run of bad luck. But after battling through a severe flood that saw them close for 11 months and then a pandemic, this café is officially re-opening and the crew are 'biting at the peach' to welcome you back. If you didn’t get a chance to visit before the closure, we recommend that you put this on your next brunch location list.... Yasmin is the owner of this delightful café and we were impressed by her multi-tasking this girl has skills. ‘I really wanted to create somewhere where I would personally like to eat. I wanted to create a place that you didn’t have to wait for an hour for a table, that had amazing food and a great vibe’, says Yasmin. Sisterhood came about after Yasmin discovered the ‘for lease’ sign on the property whilst walking her dogs in 2018. She tells us that she signed the lease that same day! ‘We wanted to ensure this place was for everyone from grandmothers, to parents with prams, to girls groups having a Sunday brunch. As a result, we put a lot of effort into ensuring the furniture, music and menu all allowed for this.’ The food here is incredibly well thought-out with a modern Australian menu designed to not alienate anyone. ‘There is a big emphasis on ensuring Sisterhood caters for everyone, we didn’t want dietary requirements to be an afterthought, but rather built into the menu. Our chef consulted with us for six months prior to opening’, says Yasmin. The Hello team ordered the Salmon Breakfast Bowl, which, as the name suggests, includes smoked salmon and comes with sauerkraut, pickled carrot, avocado, wilted kale salad and a poached egg. One of their most popular options and we can see why! A choc-chip cookie filled with cream cheese may have also come home with us for afternoon tea. An absolute Hello Hobart favourite is Sisterhood’s custom Zimmah coffee blend. Works perfectly as a flat white or a long black. Dog lovers, this place is also for you! Not only is there a separate doggy entrance, you’ll also find doggy biscuits and puppycinos on the menu. Sisterhood, the name, was the first thing that was developed after securing the location. The name represents a sense of community and indicates the café’s inclusivity. The logo of the peach represents the motto of Sisterhood that everything is ‘just peachy’ and we simply adore it. Join the Sisterhood Hobart. Located at 4/48 King Street, Sandy Bay. Open 7 days for brunch
14.01.2022 If you love coffee, ice cream and donuts (the trifecta), then the place for you is Salamanca Cream. Alex, George and Nick are the three brothers who have created a store filled with the perfect drool-worthy treats. All coming from different experiences in life, these brothers joined forces and opened Salamanca Cream. Alex has come from a coffee background, gaining experience all over the world. George is all about ice cream and baking. And Nick has had experience with a bit ...of everything! We are here every day, we love it, we will keep doing it forever, but it’s really about everyone coming and having a good experience, Alex told us. With their origins at the iconic Salamanca Market, the brothers found a blank retail canvas space, a beautiful 200-year-old heritage building and restored it to create the business into what it is today. The space is definitely a fan favourite among locals, it’s a busy, popular, and vibrant place, full of laughter and smiles. Placing an emphasis on producing high quality products, this team bake and create all the treats themselves. There are delicious freshly baked sweet items including apple and cinnamon turnovers, almond croissants, raisin and cinnamon scrolls and of course, ice cream. They make delicious savouries such as a spinach and feta pita and a roast chicken and thyme roll. The donuts, in particular, are to die for! Super tasty and not too oily, there are the classics such as cinnamon sugar and jam filled donuts and the more exotic including a Belgian chocolate. Donuts are available Friday and Sunday in-store and Saturday at the market, but hot tip, get in quick, they sell out FAST! We work with as many producers as we can around Tassie. That produce then finds its way through the ice cream, such as strawberries, raspberries, and hazelnuts. We are also very big on dairy-free flavours as we find it really amplifies the flavour of what we do, Alex told us. If all that wasn’t impressive enough, they roast their own coffee and even keep their own bees for honey to be used in their foods. We can’t leave you without recommending their signature Honeycino, a coffee paired with honey bee ware, it is addictive. For good vibes and delicious treats, head to Salamanca Cream. The coffee will not disappoint and the donuts and ice cream will leave a smile on your face. Find them open 7 days on Castray Esplanade.
14.01.2022 Effortlessly blending a bar with an arcade, Replay Bar is the newest spot to play games with friends whilst having a social drink. Owner Andrew welcomed us into his bar to show us around the 80s/90s retro theme with one of the coolest walls going around in Hobart (Super Mario vibes). One side of this bar is lined with the very best in pinball machines, think Star Wars, Batman and Iron Maiden.... ‘I love pinball machines and these are some of the very best. I love bringing back games that resonate with growing up’, says Andrew. The other room gleams with retro and funky console games like Pac-Man, Super Mario Kart and Space Invaders. Bonus, all of the console games are free to play (the pinball machines are coin operated). There is also a deck that overlooks Elizabeth Mall, perfect for people-watching with a drink in hand. Andrew originally hails from Tassie, but, like many of us, journeyed overseas for a bit and has now come back. He brings with him a passion for games and expertise in running restaurants and bars. Andrew’s favourite game? ‘Mortal Kombat II is my all-time favourite.' This Hello Hobart team member tried her hand at some Mario Kart in the Mushroom Cup (and placed last ). For the drinks, you will find the focus is on craft beer, but they also do a fabulous cocktail thanks to bartender Hawkeye. The team are looking at adding some arcade-themed drinks to the list in the future too. The bar is open from 4 pm til late Tuesday through to Saturday. Despite the games, this is an adult only bar for now (because, alcohol). Located upstairs in Elizabeth Mall (above Off Ya Tree at the Collins Street side of the mall).
14.01.2022 As sister to the popular burger van Shred Burgers and Shimmy Shakes, Billy's Burgers and Bar on Elizabeth Street Pier (next to Fish Frenzy), is sure to be a Hobart favourite. We had to ask owner Leo, why the name ‘Billy’s Burgers’ since his name is not Billy. ‘As it turns out, I got the name Billy as a nickname back when I was a teenager working at the wharf. It became a bit of an ongoing joke and it sort of stuck,' says Billy.... What can you expect from the newest addition to the wharf? A menu which offers American style burgers with a local twist. The team have kept the favourites from Shred Burgers and added in some new items. You can find the famous pulled pork burger (with hoisin marinade, slaw, aioli and apple sauce), through to a selection of shakes and sides such as loaded fries or boneless Buffalo wings. Catering for those who are gluten free, vegan or vegetarian, they also have a generous kids menu (with fitting names for these burgers). ‘I have kids, so I know how hard it is to find something that the kids like, we have tried to cater for that as much as possible’, said Leo. And Leo’s personal menu favourite? ‘I love a Classic beef burger or a Billy’s with a side of caramelised onion’. The jalapeno Monterey Jack Poppers have been a real crowd favourite too. Service is a paramount and as Leo said, ‘we want to deliver above expectations’. The staff are well trained and we focus on sourcing fresh local produce wherever possible. Billy’s Burgers has also brought in live music every Friday too. ‘We are so happy to be able to not only provide live music finally in Hobart but also help out the musicians who have been so heavily impacted via covid’. They are fully licensed, with a focus on Tasmanian beers on tap, cocktails and other spirits. If you are after a good burger, make your way down to the wharf and enjoy. You can order ahead on Facebook or via their website. Open 7 days for lunch and dinner.
12.01.2022 Macquarie Soul is an adorable little café nestled on Macquarie Street lined with gorgeous lavender plants. This space may be small, but the offerings are full of flavour and will leave you wanting more. Owners Lauren and Scott are ‘corporate escapees’ who have ventured down the foodie and coffee path. This cafe has only been open for a few weeks and is already getting great community support. Opening a business is no easy task but they sure have done a stellar job. Lauren is... the queen of baking and cooking all the yummy goodies and Scott is the king of the coffee machine! Both having had careers in corporate sales, they recently relocated to Hobart. Lauren decided to leave her Melbourne job in January and then unfortunately Scott was made redundant the day after. So Tassie born and bred Lauren and husband Scott decided to make a big change and move to Tassie. This is a true family business with daughter Hope helping out too. We were told she is an excellent taste tester and strongly recommends the dinosaur decorated vanilla biscuits! The local extended family are also keen official taste testers, so if it gets past the family, you know it’s good! So let’s talk food! Macquarie Soul is a breakfast and lunch offering tailored to takeaway. We are really passionate about supporting other local Tassie businesses like us by using their produce wherever possible, says Lauren. For breakfast think breakfast wrap (scrambled eggs, Cygnet bacon, King Island cheddar, relish and spinach), or a trio of seasonal fruit with Westhaven yoghurt and house-made granola. For lunch there is heaps to choose from including Reuben on rye, chicken burger and a fresh daily salad. You will find best sellers such as Lauren’s carrot cake and lemon slice and equally yummy treats such as kiss biscuits, caramel slice and a gluten free muesli slice. So the next time you’re on the quest for a wholesome and tasty breakfast or lunch, or a quality brew of coffee, come and say hi to this family team. While you’re there, don’t forget to treat yourself to one of Lauren’s baked sweets too. If you would rather sit in there is also a small indoor and outdoor seating area. You can find Macquarie Soul at 71 Macquarie Street, Monday to Friday 7 am to 3 pm.
12.01.2022 Looking for a way to create some calm amongst the crazy 2020? Mana Studio is a place that can offer just that peace. This awesome yoga, pilates and meditation studio is run by 4 incredible women. One quarter of this partnership is co-owner Lauren, who gave us the tour and chatted all things yoga. ... Firstly though, what can you expect from Mana? A heated yoga room which is perfect for these cold winter days Non-heated studio that hosts classes like Flow, Yin, Pilates Child minding each weekday morning from 9-11.30 am with child carer Karen In exciting news, the team are about to launch a Reformer Pilates studio too. We were lucky enough to get a sneak peek at the space (eeek). Sign up to their socials to be kept in the loop. Lauren is one heat loving girl and had just finished up teaching a school group in the heated yoga room when we arrived. ‘I haven’t spent a winter in Hobart in 14 years. I usually take this opportunity to head to warmer climates to teach or study in India or Indonesia. So the heated yoga room is really saving me’, laughs Lauren who was using the room as her makeshift office between classes. Lauren’s love of yoga goes back a long way. She tells us that she started out in martial arts and dance, then found that yoga gave her the freedom to be still and understand herself better. ‘I love teaching yoga because I have the ability to share my learning with others. For me yoga is everything, my friends, my career, my hobby and my community’. We asked Lauren what her favourite class is. ‘It really depends on my energy and the season. For example, this week I am excited for the Yin class because I need to wind down after working all weekend.' Like everyone, covid impacted Mana with the mandatory shutdowns. The Mana team promptly put together an online platform to share their classes with their community. At one point they had an incredible 300 members online. The classes are now resuming in person and the team have been excited to welcome everyone back. If you prefer though, they are also keeping their online classes. ‘People have come back with a different pace of life after covid. They want to slow down. The students missed being in the room with other yogis without the distractions of home life.’ Lauren is also a qualified yoga teacher trainer in fact, the only one in the state. ‘It is such a privilege to have Lauren as not only a teacher trainer but also doing classes for our members’, says fellow co-owner Kate. And the name? Mana is a Polynesian word meaning a spiritual life force that we all have within us. You will find the studio above Chemist Warehouse in Murray Street, access is via a driveway between Chemist Warehouse and Hop, Vine & Still. Book online prior to your classes. See you on the mat.
11.01.2022 One of Hobart’s iconic places to eat has to be Fish Frenzy . Located on the waterfront, Fish Frenzy have been cooking up delicious Tasmanian seafood for going on 21 years now. After being a popular eating destination for so long, we asked manager Gary what makes this place such an institution. The quality of the food, the quality of service. I mean that’s what people want these days, they want a good product, good service, quick service and most importantly, friendly servi...ce The three most popular meals on offer are the ‘Fish Frenzy’ (a mix of crumbed fish, scallops, calamari and chips), salt and pepper calamari salad and their Blue Eye Trevalla (either grilled, battered or crumbed). For Gary the best part about working here is the customers. "I love our customers. We have our regulars all the time come in, and I know most of them by name" Fish Frenzy is part of the Passport to Hobart program, where you can collect a stamp on your passport after making an eligible purchase of over $20. Once you have five stamps, you will be rewarded with a $20 voucher to spend back at participating venues. For a full list of where you can grab your stamps, visit hellohobart.com.au/passport.

10.01.2022 Now is the perfect time to explore our own backyard. What better way to explore than a trip to kunanyi/Mt Wellington on a winter’s day? Add in a well-deserved hot drink or treat from Lost Freight Cafe to warm you up and you have a pretty perfect day. We went on an adventure this week to discover this gem, located at the Springs. Owner Meg (& cute 1-year-old Jack) welcomed us into the boutique shipping container-come-café to chat all things bushwalks and coffee.... ‘The elements on the mountain always keep you guessing. All in one day you get a mix of seasons. I love working here and seeing it unfold throughout the day’, says Meg. The team here are like family and they are happy to suggest walks on the mountain with free maps on hand. You’ll find delicious Zimmah coffee plus light lunch options, such as pies (vegan options available), toasties, cup-of-noodles and of course sweets to refuel you. We have it on good authority that the brownies are fabulous. Meg’s journey started with Bentwood Coffee, a portable coffee caravan, which would make regular stops at the Springs for a number of years. Then over time, it became apparent that something more permanent would make sense for visitors to the mountain. Fast forward a few years and a number of approval/planning requirements, and we have the Lost Freight you can visit today. With the amazing location comes with it some unexpected challenges. The crew sometimes can’t trade when the weather is super crazy (thick snow, bushfire risk), then throw in a pandemic and these guys are becoming quite adaptable. ‘When the restrictions eased, people could only access the mountain by walking or riding as it was closed to vehicles. So we had stickers made up that said I climbed 700 m for a coffee. It was a cheeky way to reward people for making the effort up the mountain in what were difficult days.’ And the name? ‘The freight part is because we are in a shipping container, whilst the lost is a tribute to the fact we are half way up a mountain!’ This place is sure to put you in a good mood. Open 7 days, check their page for opening hours, as well as updates on any closures due to weather (it is Tassie after all!).
10.01.2022 Christmas is just around the corner, with 28 days to go. To get into the festive spirit and celebrate the season, there are a number of Block Parties being held throughout the city. The first one is on tomorrow, Saturday 28 November, in Battery Point! So dust off those reindeer ears and come along from 11 am - 3 pm. You will also spot festive entertainment throughout the city over the coming weeks to make even the biggest Grinch smile. 10.01.2022 Adding to our wonderful foodie scene in Hobart is Dna Eating House, who open their doors this Saturday. Bringing a Southeast Asian mix to the city, rest assured this place is going to be good. The Hello Hobart team went along prior to opening this week so we could report back. We have to admit, we were hanging out all week to try it and it didn’t disappoint. The food, team and atmosphere were . The Dana team know hospitality and they know it well, co-owned by brothers Ollie... and Dan, the menu focuses on Asian cuisines which are under-represented in Hobart. ‘I am excited to share this food culture with Hobart’, says wonderful manager Mikaela. The team have a unique philanthropic business model too. For every meal, they are making a donation to a local charity, where they will share the love around by mixing the charities up regularly. There is an option to match the donation from the Dana team at the completion of your meal, or make a donation of your choice. ‘We wanted to give back to our community. After much deliberation, we have decided this is a nice way to provide a way of donating. There is absolutely no pressure to donate, but if customers wish to make even a small donation, it all helps’. The team are currently supporting Mara House, a local 24-hour accommodation for young women aged 13-20 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. What to expect from the food? Share style plates and the lovely staff are super helpful to work out how many plates you might require without going hungry or going the other way and wasting food. A Hello Hobart favourite was the Vietnamese doughnuts. These savoury delights are divine and as we chatted to the team at Dana, they seem to be a fave amongst the crew too. We followed this with the Drunken Lemongrass Chicken which had a phenomenal glaze and house kimchi. Top it off with a fresh rice noodle salad and some vegan dumplings and you really have the perfect evening feed. The menu is made for all sorts of options including vegan, gluten free, vegetarian and dairy free. There is also a chef’s feed me option if you would rather let the team pick and choose a bit of everything for you. This team, like many others in the hospitality industry in Hobart, were impacted by the pandemic. They had signed their lease for the premises just days before the impact really hit Tassie. ‘We have such a wonderful hospitality community here in Hobart. So many people have put their hand up to help us out, particularly during these tough few months of the pandemic, we couldn’t have done it without them. And now we are just so excited to be opening’, said Mikaela. Located in the former Italian Pantry site, you can find Dana Eating House at 131 Murray Street. Bookings can be made on their website https://www.danaeatinghouse.com.au/
09.01.2022 Most of you know would have dined at or walked past Mazbah cafe. It is a bit of an institution in Hobart, having graced the upper level in Centrepoint since 1979. A perfect café for those that love to people watch, enabling you to dine whilst watching the crowds shop below (a secret joy of ours)! What you may not know is that this café is sister to the famously good Sisterhood Hobart in Sandy Bay. Both owned by the incredible Yasmin, you can expect a quality cafe which is ful...l to the brim of delicious eats that will be sure to satisfy. Mazbah has recently launched a brand new all-day lunch menu with standouts like the roast pumpkin gnocchi, jaffles and the caramelised banana waffles. They also offer Zimmah coffee, so we shall say no more because you know it is amazing. Mazbah is part of the Passport to Hobart program, where you can collect a stamp on your passport after making an eligible purchase of over $20. Once you have five stamps, you will be rewarded with a $20 voucher to spend back at participating venues. For a full list of where you can grab your stamps, visit hellohobart.com.au/passport.
09.01.2022 In the heart of the city a new lifestyle brand, Etica, has opened its doors, making Hobart its launch location. This high-end store sells beautiful handmade products, all designed by owner Juan himself. But as Juan tells us, ‘this is a lifestyle brand rather than simply a store’. Juan, who is originally from Argentina, came down as part of the team running Piermont in Swansea. From here, he started displaying items for sale in Piermont, such as the leather bags. When they sta...rted to sell well, Juan decided to try selling other items, such as the knives at the restaurant onsite. As a result, this store has been a two-year process to get off the ground, but it has finally come together and radiates elegance. Juan admits that although Covid-19 wasn’t the best time to start a business, it was perfect in giving shape to things and allowing everyone to slow down. ‘Perhaps it was the right time to put things altogether’, he acknowledges. Juan’s passions include horses and in particular polo riding, consequently leather features throughout the store. You will find horse bridle leather loops that hold up the shelving, through to photos of horses adorning the walls. Growing up around horses and on a farm, Juan loves the smell of walking into a saddle room. So much so, that he is working with local candle producer Malano Australia to create an Etica-exclusive candle that carries a ‘leather’ scent. What else can you expect to find at Etica? Handmade throws from Peru and Argentina, wallets, purses and card holders. New products that you can expect include Argentinian-style belts and new handbags. Juan is always designing new products for the store, so be sure to check back in. You can find Etica at 139 Macquarie Street, Hobart. Shop online at https://etica-shop.com/ and Instagram @eticalifestyle

07.01.2022 Here at Hello Hobart we love Japanese food. So when new Japanese restaurant Yamashita Japanese Restaurant opened up, we were keen to visit. This restaurant is incredibly spacious, so don’t be fooled by the modest entry. The service is attentive, the food is filling and in keeping with what you would expect from such a restaurant. We sat down with Jackie, who has the title of both owner and chef, to discover her journey and what we can expect from this new haunt.... ‘I just love Tasmania. I came here 12 years ago and completely feel in love. After studying here, I ended up as a tour guide, which meant I got to see so much of this lovely place. So I combined my two loves, Japanese food and Hobart to bring the restaurant to life’, says Jackie. The food has a real focus on sourcing local produce wherever possible to get the best flavour. You will find Bruny Island oysters, eye fillet and blue eye trevalla paired with Japanese flavours. We tasted the Saikyo-Yaki, pieces of blue eye trevalla marinated in a miso sauce and accompanied with seasonal vegetables. This dish is from the dinner menu and was a stand out. It was sweet, but blends beautifully with the flavour of the fish. Our meal also included the tempura vegetables (always a winner), the seafood Dobin Mushi (a Japanese soup with pieces of perfectly cooked seafood) and the fruit lover sushi roll (yes, a sushi roll filled with apple, banana, avocado and topped with a strawberry). The menu is filled with other Japanese options, including a generous lunch menu with sets including Tonkatsu. They also have a large drink list with both Japanese and local options. We had a can of Calpis, which is a sweet and sour milk drink that tastes a bit like Yakult. ‘I decided two years ago that I wanted to open a Japanese restaurant. I have spent quite some time training in Japanese cuisine to bring these skills to Hobart. I can see that people in Hobart love Japanese too’, says Jackie. The name Yamashita means ‘under the mountain’ in Japanese, which is a nod to kunanyi/Mount Wellington, pictured in their logo. Located at 31 Criterion Street, they are open for lunch Monday to Saturday and dinner Thursday to Saturday.
06.01.2022 Pioneer of natural beauty, Jill, started Beauty and the Bees Tasmania 28 years ago at the iconic Salamanca Market. Still to this day, she follows the philosophy of only using natural, raw ingredients to create quality products you could practically eat. Beauty and the Bees is all about creating products with the environment in mind. They don’t want harmful chemicals going down the drain into nature and they avoid plastic wherever possible. Originally from Britain, Jill came... to Tassie in 1989 and rode every road of the island on her motorbike. ‘When I was up north travelling, I discovered leatherwood honey and thought this is the best thing I’ve ever tasted, it was so fantastic. It was then that I thought if I moved here, I could try and start a business using some of the purest beeswax and honey in the world and that would be beneficial to people’, said Jill. So in 1993, Jill migrated to Tassie and started Beauty and the Bees. At that time, she lived in Bellerive and converted the back of the house into a factory, making natural products. So why natural? ‘I had really awful eczema when I was young. My grandmother used to make all these natural remedies, but of course I wanted Clearasil in the plastic packet. But I did return to her products when I was about 25, because I realised she was onto something’, said Jill. The switch to natural shouldn’t be a hard one, as Jill told us. ‘It means better results because your skin is not assaulted by chemicals. People come to us because they have sensitivities and they want a wholesome product that does what it says on the packet.’ Avoiding plastic is very important at Beauty & the Bees. They use paper, cardboard, tin and glass instead of plastic, as they don’t want further plastic wastage harming the environment. They make everything from scratch by hand in Glenorchy, including all the infusions that go into the products. We were amazed to hear that their beer shampoo is an 18-step process! You’ll find a delicious array of quality, local ingredients being used, such as leatherwood honey, herbs, goats milk, seaweed and beer. And great news, they cover the whole family, pets included! From shampoo bars to styling pomade, there is something for everyone. Head on down to their shopfront at Galleria Salamanca to visit the friendly team and see (and smell!) for yourself all the amazing natural goodies that will leave your skin and body feeling healthy and happy!
06.01.2022 If you haven’t tried a Lady Hester sourdough donut, then we highly recommend you make a trip to their newly opened store to get your hands on one! Plus, their new store offers up loads more treats and new savoury options to satisfy your taste buds. The display cabinet will delight with sandwiches, cakes, and morsels like their Lemingtons, a sponge filled with their preserved lemon curd and coated in lemon cream glaze and tossed in coconut. The donuts that have made Lady Heste...r famous are made in small batches that take 48 hours to make, with lots of love and care in each one. The donuts are filled with a mix of decadent Persian inspired flavours. The team mix up the flavours depending on what is in season. Sisters Erin and Loren started their business back in 2014 at a number of market stalls and the help of a sourdough starter. After years of trading at the Farm Gate Market and other markets throughout the state, they are now opening up their own store in Battery Point. Don’t fear, they will also still be trading at Farm Gate Market on Sundays for all of your donut needs (just not this Sunday while they have a well deserved break). The name Lady Hester? Named after a rebellious English aristocrat and one of the first female adventurers to travel through the Middle East. This new store is located at 52 Sandy Bay Road, Battery Point and open 9.30 am - 3.30 pm Wednesday to Friday and 9.30 am to 2.30 pm on Saturdays.
05.01.2022 Can you crochet or knit? The call out is now on for Hobart to participate in the creation of festive squares to be displayed on a yarn-bombed Midtown Christmas tree (Elizabeth Street). Get creative and drop off your 20 cm square (using red/green yarn) to either Lily & Dot or CWA Gift Shop, Hobart, Tasmania by 14 November 2020!
05.01.2022 A little Hobart secret is the quirky Spacebar Gallery. Supporting 26 makers and producers, this space is full of unique handmade pieces perfect for treating yourself or for a cute gift to make someone’s day. ‘The art and pieces here are like a dessert for me’, says delightful owner Lorena. You will discover something fun and quirky in every corner of this store. From beeswax wraps by Sustomi, handmade clothing from Pony Black, rings made from repurposed spoons by Spoon Savvy ...and funky homewares from MUCHIMO. ‘It is so hard to choose a favourite piece. I do have a number of the Chris Wright ceramics at home though because I love his work. I also adore many of Melly’s jewellery pieces’. Spacebar Gallery has been pleasing tourists and locals alike since 2010, with owners Lorena and Milly joining three years ago. Like many other businesses, they closed their doors due to the pandemic, but these ladies were still feeling the love from customers. ‘We often would come in to messages left on the phone from customers saying they missed us and asking when we would reopen. It was very sweet’. Lorena tells us that Milly will be moving on from the business to focus on her art, a passion she rediscovered throughout the pandemic. But don’t fear, these two are still close and Milly’s work can still be found at the store. This store supports emerging and established artists and we can see why people fall in love with this hidden gem. And the name? Well it refers to expressions and what the spacebar represents with regards to leaving ideas for an idea. Simple and we love it. Spacebar Gallery is located in Salamanca Arts Centre (best entrance is from Wooby’s Lane). They have reopened their doors, but are on reduced trading hours, check their website for hours. They are also in the process of moving their wares online, so you have both options to shop, check out https://spacebargallery.com.au/.
05.01.2022 | A tribute to Dark & Dangerous Thoughts | We can’t possibly recreate this, it really is a Dark Mofo specialty. But what helps to power thoughts? Coffee. Support local businesses and visit a local coffee shop in your neighbourhood to power your thinking. Our pick for this morning is Villino Coffee. Located in Criterion Street, this friendly team will start your weekend off with the perfect caffeine hit. If you are peckish, grab a muffin or slice on your way too.... Once the caffeine kicks in, consider a trip to a local bookstore to get the thoughts going. Dymocks Hobart is a family-run bookstore in Centrepoint that can happily recommend something thought provoking.
04.01.2022 Pollen Tea Room owner Abbey took us in on a cold winter’s day this week to show us around this gorgeous heritage-listed cottage in Battery Point. This place is sure to warm your soul. Before we go on any further, this week marks the first Saturday since the pandemic they will be open. So you have an extra day now to check this place out and support a local business! The menu at Pollen is full of earnest, wholesome food and drink, and of course they do tea, and they do it real...ly well. Abbey is a walking encyclopedia when it comes to tea knowledge! She brewed for us an immunity tea, filled with ginger, turmeric, black pepper and lemon. This one is sure to ward off any nasty bugs. With the addition of your own personal tea timer, you know when the tea is perfectly steeped and ready for drinking. ‘If you forget your lunch or you don’t have time to make something that is nourishing, we have it. We don’t want people to feel indulgent when they eat our foods, but rather you can eat our food day-in, day-out’, says Abbey. A favourite on rotation at the moment is their unique take on a pumpkin tart. They were already sold out the day we were there, so instead we opted for a mocha bliss ball (10/10 would recommend). The team makes their own almond milk, coconut yoghurt, kimchi, sauerkraut and nut butters in-house. Also, they don’t charge extra for your milk choice (a win for this almond flat-white girl). Abbey tells us that the house-made hot chocolate goes perfectly with the almond milk. The cottage seats people indoors or if you prefer some fresh air, the courtyard is perfect. The courtyard is also home to a small garden, which, when in season, produces herbs and other produce that feature in the dishes. Throughout the pandemic, Pollen Tea Room created an online ordering system where you can either pick-up or have delivered the same quality nutritious food at home. Many regulars have enjoyed this service and Abbey and her team have decided to keep it up. Check out the menu on their website to place an order. Located at 56 Hampden Road, Battery Point. Open Mon Sat from 7.30 am.
04.01.2022 The adventure continues with Passport to Hobart as we head out to our next stop, Grinners Dive Bar. This bar is cool without even trying to be. Serving up traditional Mexican street food in the heart of Midtown. Owned by three friends who came up with the idea after a big night out, this bar mixes up true Mexican style with local flair. The space is surprisingly big, opening up into two rooms on the bottom floor and an upstairs area. As owner Ben tells us, this building has b...een home to some great businesses in Tasmania and it is fair to say Grinners will likely have a similar legacy. On the menu, Ben’s personal favourite is the ‘Southern Brisket’ taco whilst he says that the crowd favourite is the 3 for $15 tacos. As a bar they of course serve up a whole host of beers on tap, wine and delicious cocktails. When we popped in it was a delightful afternoon and you could easily see how you could watch the world go by with a beer in hand. Bookings are welcomed, however, they can easily accommodate walk-ins at most times. Located at 132 Elizabeth Street and open 7 days. Grinners is part of the Passport to Hobart program, where you can collect a stamp on your passport after making an eligible purchase of over $20. Once you have five stamps, you will be rewarded with a $20 voucher to spend back at participating venues. For a full list of where you can grab your stamps, visit hellohobart.com.au/passport.
03.01.2022 Continuing on in our series of Hobart locals, we would like to introduce you to Lucie. You will often find Lucie working at The Vitamin Shop in Liverpool Street. She is a qualified holistic nutritionist, mental health counselling student, and self-confessed foodie (so you can trust her recommendations). We asked Lucie what her favourite thing about Hobart is.... The strong sense of community. Working in the CBD for the last 7 years has allowed me to create meaningful relationships. Not just with other business owners, but clients and customers as well. I'm proud to be a part of a place where we look after each other, and it's been particularly evident over the last few months. She shares with us what her favourite picks for places to go in Hobart. It really depends on the day and what I'm doing, but always first is coffee! if I'm on my way to work Capulus Espresso Watchorn Street, is my go-to. Otherwise, if I fancy a bit of caffeine later in the day Villino Coffee is just around the corner in Criterion Street, but Parklane Espresso in Salamanca has my heart, reserved for days off and the weekends. When I'm at work I typically head to Collide Wholefoods for lunch. They have wholesome soups and gooey toasties. If I'm busy and need something quick, Sush is always a winner. As for drinks and dinner, there are far too many to mention but Sonny Hobart, Lucinda Wine Bar, Dna Eating House and The Den Salamanca are my current favourites!
02.01.2022 Buying locally made is important, we know this. But it is made easy when we have stores like Island Seamstress open up with beautiful pieces. This store makes stylish and often individual pieces right here in the heart of Hobart. Owner Bronwen was encouraged to open up Island Seamstress during Covid when she decided that it was ‘now or never’ to expand her offerings after a vacancy was made available in the same building she had been previously doing alterations in. ‘Our tea...m has great talent and it was often being wasted. I wanted them to have the opportunity to make their own pieces for the people of Hobart. So I decided to expand and open up a shopfront and sell some of the amazing things the team can make’, says Bronwen. The pieces that you find here are made from naturally occurring materials, such as linens, wool and cottons. Designs are a mix of plain colours through to beautiful intricate patterns. Bronwen and her team know quality and only purchase the best material to start from to ensure a superior finished product that you see on the rack. Plus, if you purchase an item from the store, you can have the items altered for free. The material used in their products are sourced locally in Australia with the exception of the quality Italian wool for use in the coats. Zero waste is also a key part of the ethos at Island Seamstress. They only order small amounts of material and any offcuts are made into things, such as scrunchies and fill for ottomans. ‘I see that I have a responsibility to my staff to run a business which is always evolving so that we can employ local and we feel we also have a strong responsibility to the environment given we are in manufacturing’, says Bronwen. Located in what was a popular barber shop at 100 Elizabeth Street, Bronwen saw the opportunity to take the downstairs shop space and decided that it was time to branch out after operating as an alterations store known as The Sewing Room. Bronwen took us on a tour of the upstairs production area and it is great. The team were all smiles and know their stuff! We have never seen so much thread in one room before. Open 10 am 3 pm, Wednesday through to Saturday.
02.01.2022 We are very excited to share this particular new venue with you. Forty Spotted are opening up their own Gin Bar in the city this Friday perfectly timed for the upcoming festive season!! Located in Argyle Street above Pigeon Whole bakery, this new location is a ‘must’ on the list to try out. We sat down with Dan, Head of Hospitality, to chat all things gin!... We have always had Lark Distillery, where you could get a Forty Spotted drink, but it has come time for Forty Spotted to have its own identity. It deserves its own celebration because it is a beautiful gin, says Dan. The venue is simple but architecturally designed to represent a Forty Spotted pardalote nest a nod to the much-loved branding. You’ll find a variety of Forty Spotted gins to try such as the exclusively Tasmanian Tassie Bush Honey Gin, or the yet-to-be-launched Raspberry and Rose. More exclusive range gins will be joining the cohort shortly. Treat yourself to one of their cocktails where gin is the hero. Coupled with classic native Tasmanian flavours, these are sure to impress. You will also find a selection of rare gins that Dan describes as ‘an exceptional range from both here in Tassie and overseas’. We want locals to come this bar and really own it. Forty Spotted is a classic Tasmanian flavour and we want people to support it. In a twist on the standard offerings, they are also offering a unique Gin-stitute, a selection of gin blending masterclasses during the day. The classes see you spending time with the Forty Spotted Gin Professors, who will take you through the gin making process (whilst you of course have a gin in hand). You then get the opportunity to make your own gin using the knowledge you have been bestowed (you get to keep it of course)! The gin professors are the best of the best, featuring the likes of Dan himself, Maddy from Society and Niall of Oddfellows fame to name a few. Make sure you book in as these sell fast! The bar will be opening this Friday 27 November and will be open regularly Thursday to Sunday from 4 pm.
