24.01.2022 Happy Easter! As lock down round three is upon us over this Easter period and so 2021 is proving that there is no such thing as normal anymore. If you do experience any dental pain or trauma please call on us on (07) 3395 6944, we are always here for you and to help. ... We will keep you updated along the way and we apologise for any inconvenience. Wishing you a safe Easter from all of us at Hello Smiles and sending out our best wishes to everyone affected by the lockdown. Chocolate Advice!! Please remember! Chocolate and your fridge are not friends! Please eat your Bunnies, Bilbys and Eggs at room temperature! Cold chocolate is to teeth, what Minties are to fillings! Please take care of your precious pearly whites and make sure there is plenty of brushing and flossing happening over this period.
22.01.2022 A very big, most wondrously huge, happy birthday to our amazing Dr Sara!
21.01.2022 Kids and their teeth can present unique challenges when it comes to routines and making sure they are on-top of their oral care. We asked Dr Tristan to give us with some thoughts on this topic. Here are his tips: It’s ok that kids brush their own teeth, but parents should always supervise and provide an extra polish at the end to ensure the teeth are clean.... Routine is everything! Build a routine and work really hard to keep to it that way brushing never gets skipped. Team work makes the dream work! If you are able to make brushing a family affair, it will be fun for all involved and reinforce the importance of brushing regularly. Children learn by example, so if you are able to brush at the same time as them, it will also be great for perfecting technique. Reward good brushing behaviour. A reward chart with stickers is great or simply encouraging them and rewarding with a well-earned high-five at the end for a job well done. Aim to make brushing a positive event (and not a chore). If you can put on your child’s favourite song, it will make it fun as well as make it easier to pass time. We recommend 2 full minutes of brushing to be most effective. Cartoon characters are gold! Most cartoon/children’s characters have a book or show involving brushing their teeth. We would encourage you to read/watch these with your children to help them understand the importance of brushing. Finally, here are some great resources Dr Tristan recommends from the Australian Dental Association: https://www.ada.org.au/Your-Dental-Health/Children-0-11 https://www.ada.org.au//When-should-my-child-first-see-the

16.01.2022 We are very excited to introduce Dr Laura Sanderson who joins the Hello Smiles team. Dr Laura's approach is gentle and caring and she brings with her a wealth of dental experience. To help get to know Dr Laura, we asked her a few questions that you can find below: What would you say is your dental philosophy?... I want to create a positive experience for my patients and provide a very high standard of care with a gentle and caring approach. I want each patient to feel comfortable and let them feel like they are in control. I believe good communication is key for patients to have a positive experience What is the one thing you would want patients to know about your work? That I will always endeavour to provide the highest quality of care for all of my patients, with a major focus on ensuring the patient is happy, comfortable and relaxed during their visit. What is the best part of your day? I am very grateful to be in a profession where I am able to meet new people every day and provide a service that potentially improves my patients' quality of life; such as relieving pain, creating a new smile, and improving function. It gives me an enormous amount of satisfaction to help my patients and be part of their dental journey. To read her full story, visit her profile via the link below.
15.01.2022 We’d love to introduce to Dr Emma Hatherall the latest member to join the Hello Smiles team! Originally from Wales in the United Kingdom, Dr Emma moved to Brisbane in 2013 in search of the warm Australian sun. Dr Emma brings with her a vast array of experience and incredible skillset, though it is her warm manner and friendly approach that sets her apart and makes Dr Emma a true leader of her field.... For patients who experience anxiety and especially children, Dr Emma's kind, warm and friendly approach means she is able to make her patients feel at ease whilst delivering beautiful long lasting dentistry. Meeting new people and being part of their dental journey is what Dr Emma loves most about her work. A top day for Dr Emma is when a patient feels in control, confident and loves showing off their smile. Outside of the dental clinic, Dr Emma is a keen long distance runner and can be found most weekends hitting the many trails across Brisbane.

07.01.2022 Positive reinforcement is something we truly care about at Hello Smiles. If we can make a dental experience fun and rewarding from an early age, it sets the stage for lifelong positive oral hygiene habits and visiting the dentist. We want our little (and big) patients to look forward to their visit and not feel like it is something to be anxious or scared about. With this in mind, here are some helpful tips to help make coming to the dentist, a positive experience:... 1. Talk about their visit The best way to prepare for a dental visit is to talk about it before hand. Discuss with your child why their teeth are important, what will happen when they visit and answer any questions they may have. The more they are prepared, the less intimidating and scary it will be. 2. Be upbeat, positive and a good role model Your attitude is so important! Dental visits can be fun and educational, so we encourage parents to adopt this approach and be upbeat about visits. Children will follow your cues, and moods play a big role. They will be nervous when you're nervous and excited when you're excited. If you have dental anxieties, be careful not to transfer those fears to your child. We are always on-hand for you to help talk you through any techniques to guide you through it. If we stay relaxed and calm about their visit, they will hopefully be as well. 3. Avoid threats and punishment We understand that sometimes it can be difficult to get your child to brush your teeth or behave, and a little fear encouragement can get help the job the done. This unfortunately, can have a negative side-effect by associating the dentist with pain and punishment. Try to avoid motivating them with stories of painful procedures, needles, fillings and teeth extractions. Be positive and explain that checkups are intended to preserve their dental health and keep their smiles lovely. 4. Be patient and not force things As dentists, we always put a child's mental well-being first. If children show signs of resistance or anxiety, it's important not to push them and to reassure them. During a first visit, it is not uncommon for a child to show reluctance and small baby steps are required to gain confidence. Sometimes it can take a couple visits to let the dentist have a look inside their mouth. If you have any concerns or would like to talk anything through, we are always here for you and more than happy to answer any questions you may have.
07.01.2022 Meet Joel! He is 6’5 tall! That’s about as tall as Micheal Jordan. Joel has been seeing Dr Sara since he was shorter than her.. you can imagine that was a long time ago! Joel’s dad tried very hard to stop him eating him out of house and home by putting a padlock on the fridge but Joel admits he was able to crack the code pretty swiftly! And it shows! Thanks for the laughs today Joel, you better stop growing otherwise you won’t fit in the dental chair anymore!

01.01.2022 We are in awe of Dr Tristan today! On Sunday (27 September 2020), Tristan competed in The IRONMAN Cairns Asia Pacific Championship, his first ever Ironman. An Ironman is not for the faint-hearted. It's a 3.8km swim, followed by 180km bike ride and finished off by a 42.2km run. All in Cairns' 27 degree sunshine.
