12.01.2022 Thanks to Bench Africa: COUNTRY INFO - MOROCCO Morocco is so often combined with trips to Spain or Portugal & it’s easy for people to forget Morocco is in Africa. The distance between Europe and Africa at the narrowest point is only 14.5 kilometres. On a clear day you can stand in Africa and see Europe & it’s almost close enough to swim between. The country is about the same size as California and because it is longer than it is wide, it offers a varied landscape with desert...s, lush forests, mountains and beautiful coastlines. 99% of the 35 million people that live in Morocco are Muslim. Arabic is the main language, with English the 2nd most spoken, and then French. The Mummy, Gladiator and Sex and the City 2 are some of the many movies that have been filmed in Morocco. The old towns and souks are often disguised as Dubai or the middle east and the south offers the perfect desert landscape. Morocco may have been in more movies than you realise. Marrakesh, known as the red city, is famous for its old town, souks and ancient walls and gates. Jamaa el-Fnaa is said to be Africa’s largest market square. Rabat, the capital, is a beautiful seaside city with many modern buildings as well as French colonial architecture. Casablanca, a port city and commercial hub, has Morocco’s most famous building. The Hassan II Mosque is the largest functional mosque in Africa and sits on reclaimed ocean land. Fez, formerly the country capital, is known for its ancient medina (walled in city), medieval streets and leather tanning factories. Chefchaouen is known as the blue city where blue and whitewashed houses sit with the Atlas Mountains as the backdrop. The Sahara Desert dunes, a small part of the massive desert, is located in the south of Morocco. The gateway to the Sahara is 560 kilometres of winding mountain passes from Marrakech. However, the stunning dunes and endless rolling hills are a must visit for any traveller to Morocco. Enjoy the days exploring the desert or riding a camel and the nights stargazing. If you cannot get to the swiss alps, you can still enjoy a ski holiday while in Morocco. Oukaimeden Ski Resort in the Atlas Mountains has 6 ski lifts. The best time to visit is between January and March and can be visited on a day trip from Marrakech. No trip to Morocco is complete without Moroccan mint tea. The sweet and minty tea is perfect for any occasion. However it must always be poured from the pot into the cup from a height. Argan oil is a very popular export from Morocco. The only issue is that goats have worked out how to climb the trees to steal the fruit in early summer before the harvest has started. #morocco #countryinfo #benchafrica #HelloworldTravelTraralgon See more
