24.01.2022 Here at the Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater HQ, for more than 30 years, we have been restoring habitat for the Helmeted Honeyeater and all the other creatures that share these threatened ecosystems. In recent years, many of our revegetation areas have been subject to drying, despite being in a swampy system...this year, the swamps are finally having a really good drink! Here are some of our revegetation plots - the plants we choose for habitat restoration all thrive in dyn...amic, flooded environments. We look forward to seeing these plants flourish and - hopefully - initiate natural recruitment in response to the floods! More nesting habitat for the Helmeted Honeyeater and great habitat for the Leadbeater's Possum (lowland genetics)! The Parks Vic (PV) head office announcement last Wed is just one part of the 'resume' equation - stay tuned for news on 'how' PV and the Friends need to navigate through the COVID Safe restrictions. Spoiler alert: PV's volunteer portal ParkConnect is likely to be part of that equation. 12.01.2022 News just in - well, 11.40am in my Inbox - like many of you in metro Melbourne, we've been watching and waiting for advice of when volunteers can return to the public estate in metro Melbourne, and under what conditions. ANNOUNCED: Parks Victoria have advised today that all volunteering can now recommence, provided the activity is permitted under the latest public health measures. STAY TUNED: The Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater staff and committee of management will provide further advice on how our volunteer programs will proceed in due course. Everyone's health and safety will be our primary concern as we welcome you back :) MEANTIME. 11.01.2022 Two community groups helping each other, four people with an "I'd love to help" attitude, 65 plants and ... a win win! Last year Olinda Community House helped Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater by advertising our programs at no cost. Greatly appreciated! Now that COVID restrictions are easing, we have provided the Community House with some plants from our nursery, and a willing volunteer team to add to a new garden and picnic area for local people/families to relax in outdoors. Bonus for us - a walk afterwards in the Dandenong Ranges Botanical Gardens and learning bird IDs from each other - highlight for Maryanne was seeing Lewin Honeyeaters - whilst enjoying some great company. Thank you Maryanne, Sandra, Rachel and Sue!!

09.01.2022 Coming to 'a backyard' near you! The Annual Backyard Bird Count starts this Monday, 19th October until Sunday, 25th October. It's open to everyone and is a great opportunity to hone your powers of observation and see what beautiful birdlife exists in your 'own backyard'. Each year, BirdLife Australia holds the #AussieBirdCount, which asks Australians to get out into their backyards or local nature spots and record the birdlife they observe. This year's data will be compared ...with previous years' data to help reveal patterns of dispersal of species displaced by the 2019-20 bushfires. 04.01.2022 Vale Darcy Duggan With deep sadness and heartfelt condolences to Darcy's family, we celebrate the incredible life of Darcy Duggan, who passed away on Saturday from a rare form of Leukaemia. Darcy was a true (and hilarious!) gentleman, a brilliant ecologist and natural resource practitioner, a much-loved community member and an indefatigable advocate for the environment. Many Friends of the Helmeted Honeyeater members, volunteers and supporters will have met Darcy 'along the t...rack'. Darcy's legacy itself is like that of a forest: he inspired and educated so many people who have, in turn, become active advocates for the environment. And may it continue in that way. Thanks for the memories, Darcy. You will be so missed.

01.01.2022 Thanks to Anat for sharing this: While we are waiting for our volunteering activities at Yellingbo to recommence, a group of volunteers took advantage of the eased restrictions in Melbourne to enjoy a bird and natural habitat survey at Butterfield Reserve in the Dandenongs. Helmeted Honeyeaters were once recorded at the Reserve, and the Friends are working with landholders to create a habitat corridor from here to YNCR, along Woori Yallock Creek - an 8km stretch. The beautiful spring weather allowed for ample opportunity to survey the bird species, counting over 30, with a highlight being a Rose Robin. We also saw and heard a variety of honeyeaters, including New Holland, White-Naped, Yellow-Faced and White-Eared. Other highlights included a Tubercle Burrowing Crayfish and a Common Bird Orchid.
