24.01.2022 We are planning a campaign to increase the number of children supported, by putting an insert into Christian press in Australia. If you have any ideas we would love to hear them.
24.01.2022 Just visited a remote village in Kalahandi Dist, Orrisa, India. Amazing work being dobe thru Help a Child programs. One village motivated to access gov't services has had a school built & staffed, electricity connected & water supplied. Next task is to get road rebuilt. All through grace of God and ahowing villager how to access aervice themselves
22.01.2022 Children involved in the Acedemic Development Centre in the first slum we visited, they attend the program which is run in the early evening.
22.01.2022 Savrithi with her younger sister, is 12 years old. Her family want to marry her off
20.01.2022 Prayer Diary Week 52 Thank God for the gift of his son Jesus. He came to give us abundant life. Pray for abundant life for all his children on earth
19.01.2022 A street at night in the slum.
18.01.2022 Finally our new website is up and running. Go to www.helpachild.org.au to see what we are up to, what we are about, and how you can join in. You can now make secure payments for your sponsor child, both for existing and new sponsors, using 256 bit encryption, (a bit of techo mumbo jumbo that ensures your card and payment details remain yours and won't get pinched by others). So have a squizz and let us know what you think. Cheers Ian Reeders.
18.01.2022 Prayer Diary Week 50 Pray for the poorest families of India. Ask that God move in the hearts and minds of donors around the world to reach out to them with compassion.
18.01.2022 Our children at school in Tamil Nadu
17.01.2022 The inside view of a slum dwelling. It consists of a single room in which they cook, sleep and store all their earthly possessions.
16.01.2022 Get the word out to everyone you can
16.01.2022 Prayer Diary Week 51 Pray for Christians in the world's poorest, that they may be a light to those around them.
15.01.2022 On day two we visited a second slum. Here the chairman of Help a Child Australia Board is addressing a group of young people who have been selected to attend a vocational course at a technical collage in Kolkata. On completion of their course they are guaranteed employment.
15.01.2022 With the proceeds from our Christmas appeal we have been able to setup grains banks in 12 villages in Orissa, India. Farmers can withdraw grain to sow crops and then repay their "loan" in grain with an extra amount of grain being "interest". These grain banks will become self sustaining within 12 months. How simple is that!

13.01.2022 A food vendor in the slum. She is making and selling deep fried vegetable balls at a rupee each.
12.01.2022 Prayer Diary Week 2 Pray for increased transport services to these remote villages
11.01.2022 Visited two villages in isolated region of Ganges flood plain. Difficult to gauge my reactions to today. While much can be done to raise awareness about education and access to gov't services, the reality is the villagers don't own the land they work and are virtually bonded slaves to the landlords. Complex issues here, still it's early days yet in this project.
11.01.2022 Prayer Diary 2012 - January In the most remote villages of North-East India, children walk through snake infested forests and rivers just to reach their school. Many also walk the distance on an empty stomach, and after this harship their teachers are often absent. With your support we have initiated Village Education Committees (made up of village leaders and mothers) who regularly monitor teacher attendance and safe access to schools.
09.01.2022 Back in Chennai from Madurai. Visited families ravaged by HIV/AIDS. Promiscuous fathers get infected, give it to their wives who become positive and a child is born positive. That child did not ask to be infected! Again saw a great program supporting the women and children affected by the disease.
08.01.2022 While I am sure your organisation is worthy and I know the need is great, we are no longer working with children's homes. Today our focus is on community development programs that transform the lives of children through sustainable physical, social and spiritual development. These programs are designed to keep families together.
07.01.2022 Have you been to a wedding where the minister asks if there are any objections? I hope there werent! Sadly, today I need to tell you about a wedding we must object to, because its the marriage of a twelve-year-old girl. Our team in India have found a young girl named Savrithi, whose family are trying to marry her off. I dont know about you, but I think twelve year old girls should be in school, not walking down the aisle. For Savrithi, the consequences of early marriage c...ould be tragic. In India, although child marriage is illegal, ninety per cent of village girls are married as children. Not surprisingly, their life expectancy is very low. Instead of going to school or playing with friends, these girls can be forced to work in near slave-like conditions in the homes of their in-laws. And worse are the reports of death in childbirth of wives too young to bear children. Savrithi has no one to protect her. Her father died and her mother remarried, leaving Savrithi and her ten-year-old sister with their grandmother. The girls are traumatised and desperately lonely. When our team met Savrithi, they described her as having hopelessness in her eyes. Her grandmother cant care for them for long, and says marriage is their only chance to survive. I know another way they can survive, without getting married. With sponsorship for Savrithi, we can provide urgent family support to keep these girls safe and in school. I know you already support us so faithfully, yet Im praying youll consider sponsoring a girl like Savrithi, for just $1.30 extra a day. If youre not able to give this extra gift at the moment, will you instead ask someone else to prayerfully consider helping Savrithi? You could: 1. Tell a family member or trusted friend and ask them to contact us. 2. Pass this onto your Small Group. 3. Or you could bring this matter before your congregation at church. We can certainly provide you with other childrens profiles. In return for sponsorship, Help a Child Australia will protect girls like Savrithi from a dangerous early marriage, and will help generations of girls into the future too. Its been proven that when girls are forced to drop out of school, their chances of getting a job plummet. And this means they cant work to buy food or medicine for their children. So the cycle of poverty goes on, causing hardship and heartbreak for future generations of children. Together, we can stop this cycle, and save young girls from a tragic marriage. If you have any questions, or would like to sponsor a child, please give me call on 1300 795 808. Its a local call and I am always very happy to hear from you. I thank you again for your faithful support of Help a Child Australia, and for our work with vulnerable children in particular. I pray you and your family are blessed in return.
06.01.2022 Prayer Theme for May It used to be taboo for women to have babies in hospital. Instead the baby would be born in the village, where the locals had little knowledge about hygiene. This resulted in infections and subsequently a higher mortality rate for mother and child. Our interventions in these remote villages have helped spread awareness about the benefits of atenatal care and hospital delivery when medical intervention is needed. The result has been a sharp fall in infant mortality rates, which is wonderful news for mums and babies!

04.01.2022 Some of the areas we work in and programs supporting children in need
03.01.2022 Female infanticide (the killing of newborn infant girls) still occurs in remote Indian villages. Help a Child works among these communities to bring about awarenes and change. Sylvia, a wonderful nurse in Karunalaya Hospital is deeply grateful to her Help a Child sponsor. As a newborn her parents paid a birth attendant to kill her, but the attendant handed her over to the local pastor who enrolled her in our sponsorship program. Today Sylvia's story a testament to the mercy of God and the resilient spirit of our girl children
03.01.2022 Today about 10 hrs in the car for a round trip of 300 km, and before you say it, no it wasn't the car. It's an indication of the bad roads and mayhem and congestion in this north eastern state of Bihar. Remote in India does not mean sparsely populated as we understand it in Oz. At a village community meeting one old guy of 85 said he had been through 20 floods in his lifetime. That's about one every 4 years. Today one lady said "show us what to do and we will do it!" One giant leap forward for this village.
02.01.2022 We are working on our new website which will have the same address as the old one, ie, www.helpachild.org.au. Also included will be an online sign up for new sponsors, and the ability to pay sponsorships online via Mastercard, Visa, and Internet Bank Transfer. Because of the new site registration we had a little difficulty (again!) with our emails, but they have now been restored. For some time now many of you have been supporting at risk kids in our Kalahandi, Orissa, India, (Goole Maps it) community development program. There have been severe storms and destruction in that area, and we are pleased to have been able to donate $5000 to the reconstruction and recovery there. So please understand if your child progress reports are a little delayed. The program has been delayed while the works are carried out. Kind regards, Ian Reeders
02.01.2022 Day one of our visit in Kolkata, meeting with the team that run the projects in the slums.
