24.01.2022 Great Opportunity for a Clinical Nurse to join our Port Pirie Residential Site! APPLY NOW! https://applynow.net.au/jobs/HH770

24.01.2022 People of Helping Hand Paulette is a Hotel Services Assistant and works at our Ingle Farm Residential Care Home in the Café. Paulette has been working in Aged Care for over 32 years. She was a carer for seven years, then moved to the hospitality side of aged care. She has worked in both residential and in the community. The reason why Paulette has worked in aged care for so long is: ‘I suppose I have just always loved it, I enjoy working with elderly people and I am really p...assionate about it. It’s just something that I have always enjoyed doing’. ‘I really love working here, the people are just so welcoming, so helpful and everyone has been so kind. Everyone from staff to volunteers to residents treats everyone with respect. It’s just a really lovely place to work.’ One of Paulette’s favourite thing to do is interact with the residents and their families. She also loves to cook, to make nice things for people and see them happy when they eat. A fun fact about Paulette is that she has met quite a few famous people in her lifetime! She has met Michael Hutchence from INXS, Annie Lennox from Eurthymics, Arj Barker and many more. Paulette’s passion is music (especially 80s bands) and food: ‘I love food, it means everything. I love to try new things and learn new recipes. I do a lot of cooking at home and work.’

24.01.2022 At 12:30pm 18 November 2020, the South Australian Government announced a series of restrictions that will come into effect from midnight tonight, to be in place for the next six days (i.e. 19 24 November 2020). These precautions are being referred to as a ‘circuit breaker’ in efforts to contain a Covid-19 cluster. Helping Hand is waiting for the updated State Emergency Management Directions, which we anticipate will be released later today, to understand the detailed Direct...ions for aged care services and residential care homes. When we are aware of the Directions, we will know whether we need to make any further changes to the current arrangements that we have had in place since 12noon on 17 November. Current restrictions remain in place and we ask that you limit your exposure by staying home where ever possible. Stay safe and don’t hesitate to contact us if you need any support or information.

22.01.2022 Encouraging news for people with Parkinson's Disease - a team led by researchers at the UK Dementia Research Institute have found non-invasive electrical pulses can help stop disabling tremors, and avoid surgery.

22.01.2022 Dear family and friends Thank you very much for your continued understanding as we navigate our way through a challenging few weeks in South Australia. Currently our residential homes have arrangements in place that allow for essential care and support visits to residents for compassionate reasons. If you are concerned about the mental or physical health of your loved one living with us, please speak with us so we can accommodate a visit. ... As we have homes in the current COVID-19 hot spot areas, we are keeping this arrangement in place until the end of this week (Sunday 29 November). From Monday 30 November, we will be able to accommodate increased visitation at our homes; and we will begin to restart some services that we paused, including hairdressing, church services and all allied health services. Masks will continue to be worn to protect the health of our residents. Our home care services have continued to be delivered in clients homes. Thanks again for your empathy during this time, it has helped us travel through these difficult days knowing that we have the support of our community.

22.01.2022 Today the government has announced a further change in Direction, based on new information that has come to light. This means that from Monday 23 November, we will be easing restrictions in our residential care homes to the same level that they were on 17 November, allowing for essential care and support visits at our homes for compassionate reasons as well as support for those at end of life. Essential and care support visits must be approved in advance by the site Manager.... Our home care services will continue to be delivered in clients homes, in line with the current restrictions we have in place. We will be reviewing this arrangement on a daily basis based on results and communication from SA Health. If you have any concerns, please reach out to us. Thank you for being understanding and we look forward to being able to welcome all of you back to our homes, and reinstating community groups and activities, soon. Please visit the SA Health COVID-19 website for more details of the current directions relating to aged care: https://www.covid-19.sa.gov.au/emergency-declarat/aged-care

21.01.2022 Despite our best efforts to accommodate some visitation for exceptional and compassionate reasons, we have had to cease this under the new State Government Stay at Home Directions. After the South Australian Government announced a six day statewide ‘circuit breaker’ lockdown yesterday, it was followed up today with further information issued by SA Health regarding the Stay At Home Directions as they relate to Residential Aged Care. While difficult, we recognise that this ...is an important step in minimising the risk to those in residential care. The Directions state that only essential workers, and immediate family members visiting relatives to provide end of life support, are allowed to enter aged care homes. If you have any concerns, please reach out to site management. Thank you for being understanding and we look forward to being able to welcome you back to our homes soon. To read the Stay at Home Directions in full, please visit https://www.covid-19.sa.gov.au//visits-to-residential-care

13.01.2022 People of Helping Hand Clem is one of the Lifestyle Assistants at our North Adelaide Residential Care Home. She has been working for Helping Hand for 13 years and in aged care for over 40 years. She started working in aged care from the age of 17, starting out as a carer and working across different care homes in the UK and Australia, and has been in lifestyle for the last four years. Clem started working in aged care as a weekend job and she really liked it and it has now be...come her life’s passion. Another passion of Clem’s is working with people living with dementia. She has completed a Diploma of Dementia Care at the University of Tasmania: ‘Having the knowledge about dementia is really helpful and it helps me to ensure that they live the best life possible and finding out their life history helps us plan activities that we know they will enjoy.’ The favourite part of Clem’s job is chatting to the residents and hearing their experiences of their life: ‘They have lived in a time that I will never experience and it is so good to hear their stories and get to know them and knowing your residents you are able to find activities that relate to them and they will enjoy’. ‘We had a resident living here who was a rocket scientist and I found out that he worked for the Australian Government. He was one of the scientists who had to work out the trajectory of the disintegrated Skylab that fell out of orbit in 1979 and parts of it landed in Esperance WA. Moments like that are priceless and hearing it from his perspective was brilliant.’ In Clem’s spare time she loves to read (especially books about World War 2) and spending time with her two dogs and cat.

08.01.2022 In loving memory John Dudley 2 December 1955 - 21 September 2020... Helping Hand would like to pay tribute to staff member and friend, John Dudley, who died on the 21st September 2020 after a long illness. During his time with Helping Hand John was a valued and respected member of the Hotel Services Team and an exceptional maintenance officer. He worked at Lightsview from 2013 to 2019 and moved to Golden Grove in May 2019. Sadly, he left Helping Hand in January 2020, due to his illness. Helping Hand remembers John as someone who was always ready to share a joke or a laugh with staff and residents alike. Professionally, he welcomed the opportunity to further his skills and support his colleagues. John took great pride in every aspect of his work and loved to share his knowledge and experiences. Last year, he gave a presentation at a Residents Meeting at Golden Grove Residential Care Home. He spoke in detail about the new building and answered lots of questions about how it was built, the lighting and air conditioning system as well as the fire compartments and how the building would respond in an emergency. One of 11 children, John migrated to Australia from Manchester in 1970, when he was 14 years old. His first wife Julie died in 2010. John was a life-long supporter of Manchester City Football Club and the proud owner of a beautifully restored Morris Oxford, even bringing the car to Lightsview to show the residents. Our thoughts are with his partner Wendy and his children Calvin and Laura.

07.01.2022 People of Helping Hand Rudayn has been working for Helping Hand for just over a year. He is a Clinical Workforce Consultant and part of our People and Culture Team. Rudayn has worked in Human Resources for 22 years and specialises in talent management and organisational development. He grew up in Syria, and lived in the UK and Germany before moving to Australia with his family. Rudayn works on many projects which focus on organisational development, helping introduce new proc...esses for clinical, allied health and nursing staff. He also supports the Helping Hand Dementia Scholarship, in memory of Anne Gibson. The Scholarship is a learning opportunity for staff working across every level of Helping Hand to learn more about people living with dementia. When the Scholarship was introduced last year, Rudayn sourced relevant courses that staff could apply for through the scholarship, oversaw the application process, supported staff to enrol and is monitoring engagement and outcomes of training and education opportunities. Rudayn is passionate about learning. His favourite quote is ‘Learning is a life long journey’. ‘For me it has never ended, from learning different languages to living in different countries. It is a passion of mine and I love to learn new things.’ Rudayn believes Helping Hand is a great organisation. ‘I have worked for many organisations in many different countries and Helping Hand is unique. They have been so supportive and welcoming, and they are open to change and embrace new trends in management and organisational development. I haven’t worked in aged care before, but I enjoy it and want to stay and be part of this family.’ If you would like to find out more about the Helping Hand Dementia Scholarship, please visit our website - https://www.helpinghand.org.au/scholarship-sharing-knowled/

05.01.2022 People of Helping Hand Kaye has been volunteering at our Parafield Gardens Residential Care Home for 14 years. Kaye volunteers every Monday, Wednesday, and afternoons on Friday’s. She helps out with activities and whatever is needed. Kaye’s favourite activity is scrabble: ‘the residents beat me almost every time’. We asked Kaye why she volunteers: ‘Because I love it, I love to be part of this family and the residents have so much to talk about. It is like a big family here; I... have even had families of residents tell me I am like family. I just love making someone else’s life better’. Kaye’s favourite part of volunteering is the residents, she also loves the whole team at Parafield Gardens and loves that they all get involved when there are events or activities on. Kaye’s advice for someone that is thinking about volunteering is: ‘Just be yourself, be friendly and listen. They have so much to say. You will find that it is so rewarding’.

03.01.2022 IMPORTANT COVID-19 TESTING INFORMATION Please only attend a COVID-19 testing site if you have COVID-19 symptoms OR have been instructed to get tested by SA Heal...th. Visit www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/covidcontacttracing to find out if you are impacted by the Parafield Cluster AND are required to get tested. We are working hard to extend operating hours of clinics and put on more staff. If you need to get tested: Please be patient with staff who are working hard to organise logistics and collect samples. Be prepared for delays by bringing water and snacks. If you are attending a walk-in site, bring sun protection (sunscreen, hat, umbrella) and a chair. Keep 1.5 metres between yourself and others in line and wear a mask if possible. Do not take other people with you to get tested, other than those you need to care for. Motorists are reminded to not queue across intersections, ensure that you leave enough distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you, drive slowly through the testing sites and ensure you have enough fuel if waiting in line at a drive-through clinic. After your test: Go straight home. Avoid contact with other people. Stay in self-isolation until you receive a negative test result (in certain cases you may be required to remain in self-isolation or self-quarantine if directed to do so by SA Health or SA Police, even if you receive a negative test result). Information on how to self-isolate/self-quarantine: www.sahealth.sa.gov.au/covidisoadvice If you are well but worried, contact the SA COVID-19 Mental Health Support Line on 1800 632 753

02.01.2022 We want to reassure our Home Care clients and their families that we are continuing essential services during this time. However, there will be some changes to how we deliver these services to keep everyone safe during the following days of ‘circuit breaker.’ restrictions. In line with the new Government Directions: - We will be supporting you in your home, rather than taking you out into the community. For example, we will do your shopping and deliver items to your home. -... All our social support and respite visits will take place in your home. - Transport services will be restricted to urgent transport for medical appointments, however clients will be asked to sit in the back seat. - All social support groups, centre-based respite and therapy groups are temporarily postponed for a minimum of 2 weeks. - All staff who provide services will be wearing a mask. - Staff will continue to ask screening questions before they begin the service. If you, or anyone you have spent time with, has visited a hotspot location listed by SA Health; or have symptoms of COVID-19, please call us on 1300 444 663. This will not mean services will be cancelled, however, we will assess the situation and put further safety measures in place if necessary. We’ve written to all our Home Care clients and will keep everyone updated of further changes.
