22.01.2022 Bendigo Foodshare’s Bridget Bentley is ‘one in a melon!’ We couldn’t be prouder of Bridget, finalist in the ‘Weekly Times Shine Awards’. Her story was profiled in this week’s edition along with 17 women who are doing awesome things in regional Australia.... Congratulations to the Carmel Beresford, the ‘Courage’ category and overall ‘Shine’ winner. Carmel has written a book, which tells the story of her son’s death through an accident on the family farm. From all of us at Help Your Neighbour - we think you’re brilliant Bridge and congratulations. Photo: Bridget Bentley, finalist in the ‘Grace’ category of the Weekly Times ‘Shine’ Award. 21.01.2022 #mentalhealthtips - Run the dishwasher twice. When I was at one of my lowest (mental) points in life, I couldn't get out of bed some days. I had no energy or motivation and was barely getting by. What kind of grown ass woman is undone by a stack of dishes? There are people out there with *actual* problems, and I'm whining to my therapist about dishes?... But my therapist nodded in understanding and then said this (click article)

20.01.2022 SAY G'DAY to Adriana and Ali. The La Trobe University students have teamed up with Bendigo Community Health Services to develop "Five Ways to Wellbeing," a campaign to help us back into healthy movement and self care. The core is a little weak after weeks (and months) in lockdown.... Here's a challenge. Watch this two minute video. How many pushups, planks and squats can you do? How many can your partner, kids, or best friend do? Why not organise a little mini comp in your household, family or neighbourhood? https://youtu.be/afnvxIM7FRM We all know there are lots of benefits to exercise. But starting isn't always easy. Let's do this together. We're off to practice our plank and would love to know how long you manage to hold yours for! Vanessa and the HYN team. 18.01.2022 8 WAYS TO HELP YOUR NEIGHBOUR There are many ways to help your neighbour. This morning our page admin, Vanessa Wiltshire, woke up to a hairy '8-legged visitor' in her lounge room.... "I'm not afraid of snakes and most spiders, but I'm absolutely petrified of huntsmans," Vanessa said. "I can't even say the word without having a physical reaction. The fear is irrational but it just takes over." During the pandemic, Vanessa and her neighbour, Lorraine have been looking out for one another. Lorraine did food shopping for Vanessa and her husband when they were in self-isolation. She didn't even accept repayment! Vanessa helped Lorraine relieve painful muscles through trigger point massage after a long day on the farm. At 6.50AM this morning, Vanessa popped a call in to Lorraine. She was over in minutes. "Everyone has a phobia of some type,' Lorraine said. "Some of the things Vanessa does, I couldn't do. Being able to help my neighbour makes me feel good; it means I'm needed. Knowing this makes my day".

15.01.2022 WELCOME, BABY! On Monday September 14 a beautiful and healthy baby girl was born to Kaumil and Smita Patel. Yet to be named, bub came in to this world at 2.975 kg / 51 cms. Kaumil is a volunteer at Bendigo Foodshare and we can't thank him - and ALL of their volunteers enough - for their hard work during the pandemic.... Bendigo Foodshare led the development of Help Your Neighbour in the early stages of the pandemic and without their support, many messages and stories of kindness would have gone untold. From all of us at Help Your Neighbour, congratulations to Kaumil and Smita. We look forward to hearing the name of your new addition XX Photo: supplied and shared with permission from the family. Baby is wearing a white hat and is tucked up in bed with a grey and white elephant print blanket.

15.01.2022 A SPOONFUL OF HAPPINESS How a little village of spoons has brought smiles to the village of Huntly. Armies of brightly coloured spoons are making their presence felt across Greater Bendigo and the world. Have you seen them? It’s hard not to! Dubbed ‘Spoonville,’ we caught up with Leonie Strauch to find out how it’s making the people of Huntly smile.... Q. How did Spoonville come about in Huntly? A. A month ago we heard of this fun idea that had arrived in Woodend called ‘Spoonville’. It’s a UK initiative to improve children’s mental health during the pandemic. We set ours up on September 12 with just 11 spoons. Ten days later there are 80+ spoons plus a tub of free plywood spoons to decorate and return! Ours is at the Huntly Recreation Reserve. To help spread the word, we made a poster and put it up at the Huntly school and White Hills church. Local parents shared to their Facebook pages, and ABC Central Vic shared it to their socials! I took spoons to local families to decorate, including a Sudanese family. They loved it ! Q. How are the spoons made? A. Wooden spoons are ideal, but people use any spoons new, recycled or even handmade (craft sticks). Last week a local father made and donated plywood ‘spoons’ for kids who can’t get their own. Children (and adults) decorate the spoons any way they like. Q. How has Spoonville helped Huntly? A. We see families stop for a chat and talk about the ‘village’ they’ve created: at the bakery, supermarket, at Spoonville Huntly itself so many places! You can see the happiness its created and the trend has taken off. For example, the Strathfieldsaye visual arts class used decorated spoons as an assessment piece for their online learning. Spoonville is even popping up in people’s gardens, everywhere you look, it’s so great to see. To find out more about Spoonville visit https://spoonvilleinternational.com/ Photo: (Supplied) Leonie Strauch is waving from behind a tree at Spoonville Huntly. There are little colourful bunting flags fluttering above 80 decorated spoons (we describe photos to help people who use assisted reader).

13.01.2022 When was the last time you received a handwritten letter? Do you remember how special it made you feel? The team at Sunshine Bendigo recently received this note of thanks (pictured) from a family struggling to make ends meet. Last week the organisation had a day where they offered tins of baby formula free to families that could benefit from it, without a formal referral to their service.... Today this note dropped into their mailbox! As we emerge from lockdown there are still many people in the community who require support. Don’t forget to show how much you care. Something as simple as writing a letter to a friend or neighbour may be enough to make their day (or week, or year). #sunshinebendigo #bendigocharity #localssupportinglocals #bendigo #supportinglocalfamilies Photo: sourced via Sunshine Bendigo’s Facebook page. Don’t forget to go and check this wonderful charity out.
