25.01.2022 Today we acknowledge World Physiotherapy Day and the crucial role physiotherapists play to ensure their clients live as healthy and independent lives as possible. Each year World Physiotherapy Day focuses on a theme with the theme for 2020: 'Rehabilitation after severe respiratory illness'. Those who suffer from a severe respiratory illness may suffer with a number of symptoms, including:... - Impaired lung function - Joint stiffness - Limited mobility Physiotherapists work with these individuals, assisting in a number of areas including: - Early mobilisation and getting moving again Getting back to the activities of daily living Lung recovery Maintaining exercise is an important part of an individual's recovery from a severe respiratory illness and this is where physiotherapists can assist with finding the right exercises for each client. For many of us across the country, self-isolation during COVID-19 means no face-to-face sessions. Telehealth has allowed physiotherapists and others in allied health to continue their services and for clients to maintain their programs and to continue working towards their goals. HenderCare's physiotherapists are continuing to provide services through telehealth for those who require it using telehealth service Physitrack. It allows our physios to offer a range of services online, including: - Completion of mobility assessments - Provision of home exercise programs - Observational assessments For more information on how the HenderCare physiotherapists can help you or a loved one today, click the link below to find our website: https://www.hendercare.com.au/services/allied-health/

22.01.2022 What is balance and why is it so important? Balance can be broken down into two categories: static and dynamic. Static balance is our ability to maintain stability whilst the body is in a fixed posture and dynamic balance is our ability to maintain stability whilst the body is in motion. Our body uses a combination of 3 systems to obtain feedback and maintain movement control and balance: Proprioceptive (muscles and joints), Vestibular (inner ear) and Visual (eyes!). Take awa...y even one of these three and our body must work even harder to maintain an upright position. Balance is an essential part of function without which, the risk of falling and resultant injury becomes high, especially in the elderly and individuals with a disability who may have additional impairments. In this video our Physio’s Varisha and Maddie go through some simple exercises that can help improve your balance. If you, or someone you know has impaired balance, please call 1300 764 433 or email [email protected]. Please remember: This advice is of a general nature, please consult your physiotherapist before attempting any exercise.

20.01.2022 Today we recognise as International Day of Sign Languages. Today is all about recognising the rights of those who are hearing impaired and highlighting the cultural and linguistic diversity of sign language. Sign language allows so many to be able to communicate and feel connected to their friends, family and community.... Below is a story that highlights the importance of preserving sign language in society. A Brisbane QAFLW team came together to learn sign language to make sure their teammate felt as included as any other player. "It's a beautiful language and I thought, this is how we can really be that inclusive club," team captain Mia Walsh told ABC Radio Brisbane. A beautiful example of inclusion and representation that should absolutely be highlighted today. 12.01.2022 Today we recognise World Mental Health Day. Mental health is something that so many of us shy away from talking about but now more than ever, it is so important we get talking and stay connected. COVID-19 has had a major impact on all of our lives in one way or another and due to this, the mental health of a number of Aussies has suffered.... On World Mental Health Day, Mental Health Australia is sharing the message of looking after our mental health along with some simple tips on what ways we can all prioritise our mental health more. Some of these tips include: - Stay active: Exercise helps increase our wellbeing and reduces symptoms of common mental health issues - Healthy eating: A nutritious diet can have a positive impact on both our physical and mental health and consistency is key when there are changes in your surroundings or routine - Connection: Social connection is so important for our mental health and has never been more important as so many of us are still facing COVID-19 restrictions. Technology has been a great gift for so many during this time, allowing people to connect with family and friends and share their experiences with others. Put down the device: Despite the advice from Mental Health Australia on keeping connecting with others using technology, it is equally important to ensure you don't overdo the screen time and put in place time limits for yourself, including picking what you're reading or watching (e.g. news/current affairs) and how often. Make sure you balance out the content to be both informative and entertaining. It's okay to ask for help: Being willing to ask for help is the first step in improving your mental health. Having a conversation, whether in person or on telehealth, with a friend, family member or medical professional can make a huge difference in working through any stress or anxiety. There are a number of other tips and steps you can take to look after your mental health and you can check them out here: https://lookafteryourmentalhealthaustralia.org.au/mental-h/ Make sure you also check out this clip below featuring a number of well-known Aussie faces talking about the importance of looking after your mental health: If you or a loved one is struggling, please remember Lifeline is available with 24/7 crisis support on 13 11 14.

07.01.2022 Who remembers dragging the mattress to sleep outside on a stinking hot summer night? Recently our Aged Care ambassador Bob Byrne chatted with HenderCare client, Annie, who still recalls how, after migrating from Scotland, she found the Australian summers extremely hot! Check out the story below:... I’m Bob Byrne, author of Australia Remember When and ambassador for HenderCare. When Annie left Scotland, temperatures had plummeted and it was one of the coldest winters on record: When we arrived in South Australia we went to Whyalla and what I remember most of all is how extremely hot it was during the first summer. We laughed as I reminisced with Annie about growing up before such things as the luxury of air conditioning in homes. Houses, especially bedrooms, were stifling and we would drag a mattress outside and sleep under the stars. Having these conversations with older members of our community are so important, giving them a chance to reflect and retain these important memories.

06.01.2022 Today marks the beginning of Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Week. This year's theme is: ‘NDIS Planning for Success’. The week is all about shining a spotlight on the work that NDIS organisations do to help individuals organise their NDIS plans and live as independently as possible. The week is also about recognising inspiring individuals that don't let their disability define their path in life. Hayley Sands is a perfect example of someone who hasn't let her disability limit ...her in life and has in fact given her more drive to achieve athletic success. After suffering a spinal cord injury at just 13, now 20, Hayley has found a passion in table tennis and hopes to one day soon show off her skills at the Paralympics. Hayley, who is also studying interior architecture, has found the sport has helped her in her day to day life with movement, saying It’s made a huge difference to my life, improving my seated balance, giving me the strength to transfer more easily from my bed to a chair, from my chair to my car, and to play competitive table tennis. Hayley's story is inspiring for both disabled and able-bodied individuals and we can't wait to hopefully one day see Hayley representing Australia in her sport. Keep it up Hayley!
