25.01.2022 RRL Reads: Bluebird, Bluebird (Highway 59 #1) by Attica Locke. A small town mystery set in Texas, with a black Texas Ranger investigating. The two murders are complex to solve, and the issues involved bring up lots of related issues for the Ranger. It’s about family, race, and connection, and is a solid crime novel with good character development and heart. Available in print, and eAudio (Libby). From Amy at RRL HQ #rrlreads

20.01.2022 RRL Reads: How Much of these Hills is Gold by C Pam Zhang. This is a story of Chinese immigrants chasing a better life in the America West. Lucy and Sam are left alone, with the mother gone and father dead. Will they be able to find what home means to them? The writing style was so different to what I usually read, but it matches the mix of mythology and the harshness of life in early America. I enjoyed how the author filled the reader in on the family's story, especially by Ba reaching out from his grave. It is ultimately a story of family - their memories, lies and dreams. 17.01.2022 RRL Reads: The Stationery Shop of Tehran by Marjan Kamali. This book was such a good one to sit with a cup of tea or a glass of wine and get somewhat lost in. The beautiful descriptions as well as the character depictions were such a treat. It is about Roya, a dreamy, idealistic teenager living amid the political upheaval of 1953 Tehran. She finds an oasis in Mr. Fakhi’s stationery shop and it is here that she meets her first love, Bahman. Some months later, Roya agrees to me...et Bahman at the town square, but suddenly violence erupts, a result of the coup that forever changes their country’s future, and Bahman never comes. Do not think that this is just a love story. In the background, it is about class, politics, Iran, tradition vs progressive change and loss. Sometimes it is a really happy story and sometimes very sad. There was one part of the story-telling that seemed a bit too much of a coincidence but it was necessary in order to find out why and what happened that broke up Roya and Bahman on that fateful day. 17.01.2022 RRL Reads: The Queen of Bloody Everything by Joanna Nadin I really liked this book. You do need to read the blurb on back before you start it so you understand how the story is being told. As soon as I began, I felt I would really enjoy, as lots of laugh out loud moments, with an upbeat pace. I would love to spend a night out on the town with the author because you can tell she is very funny, witty (in a British, Bridget Jones kind of way), a great writer and her love of Youn...g Adult and Children’s literature shines throughout the pages. The story does become a bit heavier the further along you read but I liked Dido, the main character a lot and wanted to keep reading, willing her to make good choices as the story follows her from 6 years old into her thirties. Ultimately this is a story of wanting to belong and be loved. Set amidst a backdrop of the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s (a great trip down memory lane for my generation). It is about Dido and her mother Edie, who move from London to an inherited house in suburban Essex. The family next door are exactly the kind of family Dido dreams of: Normal. Dido wants to be normal more than anything else but it is the very thing Edie can never be. I have read mixed reviews, some not happy with the plot, some feeling it a bit contrived, some disliking certain characters, some loving them, so clearly, this book is not for everyone but definitely for me. 05.01.2022 RRL Reads: The Drover’s Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson by Leah Purcell. Molly lives in a shack in the High Country, mostly without her husband who is away droving for long periods of time. Life is harsh, but there are also moments of tenderness. Molly's love for her children shines throughout the story. It had an interesting writing style, changing from descriptive to 1st person, which at first was distracting but I ended up enjoying the style by getting into the character's thoughts. The fate and treatment of Aboriginal people and women in our early history are central themes. It ended up being quite a moving story. Available in print and as an eBook (BorrowBox).
