24.01.2022 Let's kick off the week with some good news! Global hep B rates in children under five has dropped to just under 1%. This rate is down from 5% in the pre-vaccine era (1980s to early 2000s) according to new estimates from the World Health Organization (WHO). This is a major milestone in the race to eliminate viral hepatitis! http://ow.ly/hbuk50BpvoR

24.01.2022 "Elimination will not be achieved without gender equality" We're loving this video from World Hepatitis Alliance President Dr Su Wang about mother-to-child transmission of #hepB. It is very moving and highlights the importance of integrating access to hepatitis interventions into maternal health services. https://www.facebook.com/497793673749722/videos/2615010515426906/

22.01.2022 Stigma, descrimination and racism are significant barriers to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people seeking support for mental health and alcohol and other drug use. The Queensland Mental Health Commission's latest research report, Don't judge, and listen, has found that strengthening cultural appropriateness and understanding, and harnessing input from Elders could be the key to better treatment.

22.01.2022 Each month were featuring a member of the Hepatitis Queensland team so you can get to know us. To kick things off, wed like to introduce Sam, our Operations Manager. How long have you been with Hepatitis Queensland? 5 years... Whats a typical day like? Typically picking up a coffee from our friendly baristas, no two days are the same here, which is exciting and I always walk out the door at the end of the day with a hooroo and thank you to the team. What do you enjoy most about your role? The ability to dream big and knowing that with every keystroke, conversation, phone call, cheesy video developed, and education delivered, contributes to changing someones life. What has been your favourite project so far? We have delivered some amazing projects since I have been here, so it is hard to pick a favourite however the Test Cure Live Roadshow was pretty special. What do you like to do when youre not at work? This is a tricky one. Currently spending time catching up with my mum, dad, son and partner via videos and phone calls. I do like to cook, so doing a few cooking classes with the aforementioned. I also like to watch cringeworthy reality tv shows, ONLY so I can provide wit and humour to the running commentary at our lunchtime conversations here at work! What three words best describe you? Witty, compassionate, resilient Who inspires you? In 2020, it would have to be my son, James. As a 24-year-old, he has shown a level of maturity and resilience that is breathtakingly inspiring. If you were stuck on an island, what three things would you bring? A good book, a hat and lots of drinking water. #StaffSpotlight #MeetTheTeam

19.01.2022 Addiction is a health condition that can affect one in five Australians. Yet, due to stigma, shame, and a community belief that recovery is not possible, individuals touched by addiction typically delay seeking help for nearly twenty years. Addiction impacts Australians regardless of background and stage of life, and we need to urgently address it as a national health priority. Sign the petition for a national plan to address Addiction in Australia at www.rethinkaddiction.org....au/petition Reposted with permission from Rethink Addiction @rethinkadd #RethinkAddicition

19.01.2022 Today is World AIDS Day. It is a day for people to show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have been lost to the epidemic. HIV does not discriminate, people do. Stigma and discrimination will continue to exist so long as societies as a whole continue to judge people living with HIV. You can help change this by encouraging others not to judge. https://www.qldworldaidsday.org.au/

08.01.2022 We are excited to announce the launch of Hepatitis Queensland's first Reconciliation Action Plan. We are committed to doing our part in closing the unacceptable gap that exists between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians. 07.01.2022 This month we're shining the spotlight on Nicky Newley-Guivarra. Nicky has had an incredible impact on our work at Hepatitis Queensland having been a former staff member and now as part of our Reconciliation Action Plan Working Group. When were you involved with Hepatitis Queensland? 2008 to 2015 and then in 2020 as part of the Reconciliation Action Plan working group.... What was your role? I was a ‘Project Officer’ but I fought to be an Indigenous Project Officer as it meant more about the job and me as a person. What was a typical day like? In the beginning, it was all about gaining knowledge for me. I had a lived experience around drug use and hep C, and I had studied but this was my first ‘real’ job. I managed the Art and Story Project it had a lot of names over the years, but I worked closely with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities doing education and teaching art skills around sand painting. The first six months was very quiet and then I started using my family Guivarra, and things got really busy! Spotlight continues here: https://www.hepqld.asn.au/team-spotlight-nicky-newley-guiv/
