25.01.2022 Practice, practice and all will come Just as we need to eat nutritious food everyday to shine, we need to step onto our mat everyday to lap up the full benefits of yoga. Very few of us have the time or money to go to a yoga class everyday. So developing a flexible, personalised delicious home practice is where it is at. One that can change to suit exactly where we are at on any given day. Obviously, practicing yoga everyday will have greater physical benefits as we become st...ronger, more flexible and more aligned. But daily practice is also essential for our mental and emotional wellness. When I step onto the mat everyday it's to reconnect with my truth which busyness or challenging times regularly pull me away from. It's to remind me of the mother I can be, the partner I can be and the woman I can be. The physical benefits are a bonus. I practice at night when my tribe have gone to bed, and my hubs often joins in. I know it's a time I won't be disturbed. When could you get some mat time in? Even 10 minutes is enough to stay connected, but 30 minutes will do wonders. Need another reason to love yoga? All you need is a yoga mat and a small square of clear floor space and it's yours, it's there waiting for you anywhere. I've practiced in hotels and airports. In addition to your home practice, regularly attending a yoga class taken by a teacher who does it for you is a wonderful thing - it feeds into your home practice by checking your technique, introducing new poses and thought patterns and surrounds you with a community of people who are also taking steps towards wellness, calm and truth. If you're not sure where to start talk to me about getting your very own home practice. In health and happiness, Sarah X

24.01.2022 Childcare - the question that's been missed On Radio National this morning I listened to a Federal Minister talk about the long awaited childcare package that will be announced as part of the upcoming budget. The discussion was identical to all I have heard around making childcare affordable - that it was in the nation's economic interest to get women back into the paid workforce and that it would allow many women who wanted to work outside the home to do so (so called equali...ty). What is never discussed, the question that is never asked is whether institutionalised childcare is good for our children and therefore our community. I support parents' choice to use childcare. But I resent that we are too scared, in fear of being anti feminist, to question whether it's the ideal or have a real go at supporting families to care for their own children full time. Not just financial, but social and cultural support. I have been a youth worker and secondary school teacher and my observation is that families that have been involved in the everyday grind, the little things, when their children are younger have paved the way to talk about and deal with the big things with their young adults. Feminism, humanism, should be all about real options and educated decisions. In health and happiness Sarah x

23.01.2022 Sarah 4 Ben 4 ever "I dream of a love that's as big as a mountain, that fills the horizon, there's no way around it. I dream of a love that's hot like a fire, that burns us and cleans us and keeps getting brighter. I don't know how to get there, I don't know, I don't know" Ben Lee, Giving up on Miracles... Ben Lee is back with another precious album that makes us want to be mindful, grateful, gracious and shake our booty all at the same time. My sweetheart (second only to Kirk) Ben was born the same year as I was and it seems every album of his has been a reflection of where I am in my journey. His latest encapsulates his search for the Devine, his truth and belief in humanity in pop songs that made me sing out very loud all the way home from my yoga session today. It's an album I'm very proud to play to my kids. Love is a Rebellion, fresh out this week. Thank you Ben for lifting my spirits! Sarah x

21.01.2022 Did you know that your pelvis is up to 30 percent more open in a squatting position than when lying on your back? For any woman who is hoping for a vaginal birth this is important information and serious motivation to build familiarity with and stamina in squatting positions during their pregnancy so they can use squatting as part of an active birth. Our prenatal yoga class has a solid focus on leg strength, opening the hips as we practice poses such as Malasana (low squat),... Horse Pose (high wide legged squat), Trikonasana (triangle pose) and Virabradasana II (warrior 2). Remember that a regular home practice in addition to your weekly Her and Them Expecting fix is the ultimate birth preparation and that women should avoid squatting after 34 weeks if their babe is in breech position so as not to encourage it to engage until it turns. Namaste, Sarah

20.01.2022 Busy is no longer cool It's official. I've been thinking this for a while, but over the weekend I saw it proclaimed in a magazine. And thank goodness. Do you or does someone you know regularly claim with feigned exhaustion but still a proud glint in their eye that they are 'so busy'? Translate 'so important', so 'of value'. It's addictive and it's a huge distraction from what really counts for us and the world. I for one have vowed to stop being busy this year. And I don't me...an that I'm not going to do anything. We all know that busy isn't just about what your hands are doing. It's a state of mind and body where your breathing is shallow, your adrenals are working over time, your mind is everywhere it shouldn't be and you have little perspective and no presence. This state leads to headaches, fatigue, loss of libido, fertility challenges, cravings for sugar, anxiety.... Busy is not cool. So join with me in being realistic about what you can achieve and know that going into 'busy' won't make it any easier to get through. Don't keep telling yourself or others you are busy. And next time someone tells you this with pride, come back at them with empathy. Finally, proudly schedule some you time. Our women's yoga retreat is on this Saturday February 7. Details and bookings [email protected] Namaste, Sarah x

14.01.2022 Flat out I was recently asked whether thec couple of minutes we spend in Legs up the Wall pose in Expecting is safe given our general avoidance of supine (lying flat on our back) positions. Our main vein which returns blood to the heart, the Vena Cava, is situated between our growing uterus and the right side of our spine. It has been found that in a supine position a heavy uterus can compress this vein evading to a decrease in oxygen to mum and eventually babe. My answer? I ...was advised, for insurance reasons, to avoid all supine positions in prenatal class. And I generally do, but after lots more reading and experiencing my own pregnancy I am keen to and confident about including a delicious pose like legs up the wall for a couple of minutes. I have read that it is generally a larger 3rd trimester uterus that poses that compression threat, that it results from extended periods (5 mins or more) lying flat on your back and that if it is occurring that mum will feel dizzy and move long before babe is effected. Importantly, all of us who are pregnant know that with tummy sleeping stolen away from us we regularly wake in the middle of the night after a long sweet slumber on our backs despite any propping with pillows we may do. And that's been happening to many women for a very long time. So yes, I'm cautious, but not purely for insurance reasons and not to the point where I give mums another thing to beat themselves up about and lose sleep over when they find themselves flat on their backs. Any other questions? Please ask! Namaste, Sarah

13.01.2022 Coconut Oil. It's the latest thing to be spread across all the natural health mags and blogs. So what can it do for you and how do you use it? You'll find it in a jar at the health food shop or supermarket - I've actually found the health food store to be less expensive on this one. It's solid at room temperature, a creamy luscious white butter. It's a saturated fat, but a good one, that will make you feel sated as well as providing many wellness benefits. Coconut oil has pro...ven antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties. It is easily digested and helps the body absorb nutrients and eliminate toxins. It's also acclaimed for speeding up metabolism. So mix a spoonful with your yoghurt, pop some in your smoothie or replace butter with it in cakes and crumbles. It's wonderful for frying too as it doesn't break down or go rancid at high temperatures like olive oil. It does have a flavour so keep this in mind and pop some in the pan when you're doing stir fry or curry. This little jar of magic also doubles as a body moisturiser (pregnant bellies included), a shaving gel that will leave your legs feeling silky smooth and even a natural lubricant (but it's not condom friendly). I use a tiny bit rubbed between my fingers to settle down any fly away ends on my hair. And it smells delicious. In weeks to come I'll post some coconut oil recipes for you to try. In health and happiness, Sarah x

13.01.2022 Simple Luxuries I'm a big fan of them. Sipping tea from a beautiful tea cup. Soaking in a bath spiked with some natural salts. And laying in Savasana with a magical lavender scented eye pillow on. I'm at my sewing machine tonight making a set of 10 eye pillows for the beautiful women in my Holbrook yoga class. All you need is some sturdy cotton/linen, some pearl barley and some lavender oil. Sew up your pillow with wrong sides facing leaving a little opening to turn inside ou...t. Use a funnel to fill it with pearl barley that's had a few drops of lavender oil added to it. Then do some sneaky hand stitching to seal the opening. They make wonderful gifts to yourself or others. It's the little things done with care and love and purpose that bring the real rays of light into our days. Where is your next simple luxury coming from? In health and happiness, Sarah

12.01.2022 Have you got one of these? A caesarean scar that is, not a babe. I have. I wanted and planned for a vaginal birth. In all the reading and courses I did the only discussion around Caesarean sections was how to avoid them. My wonderful naturopath did say to me close to my due date "now if you do have to have a caesarean, here are some things to think about". I didn't listen. I honestly must of thought there was zero chance of me having one. I have wonderful memories of the birt...h of Stella, but I would now recommend that anyone not planning to have a Caesarean should still plan for one. There are things you can do that can personalise it and make it a good fluid grounded experience. Be prepared. And never stop being grateful for your access to such high level medical care if you and your babe should need it. I am an advocate for vaginal birth, but think that such gratitude has been somewhat lost in the 'natural' birth industry and one must only look to the conditions for women in a country such as PNG to see that we are very lucky. I'd love to hear from any of you publicly or privately about your thoughts on this and happy to share more of mine. Namaste, Sarah

11.01.2022 Marilyn said it, but today it's mine. Power to all of you who are doing IVF right now. May you be blessed with someone who takes all of you. Sx

11.01.2022 I've just started IVF again. I rang my IVF Dr, told her I wanted to start and she signed me up and sold me thousands of dollars worth of drugs. My iron, zinc, Vitamin D levels or anything else that could have a huge impact on my ability to get and stay pregnant were not checked. I was not assessed for post natal depression or quizzed on my stress levels. I was not weighed. My IVF providers are incredibly good at what they specifically do. But what they don't do is support wom...en in building and maintaining general fertility, and that means health. I was disappointed and angry when I first worked this out. But now I realise and accept that in our journey to have babes we need to surround ourselves with a support network. And have I got a great team! A wonderful naturopath, GP, acupuncturist, a sister who is a midwife and, of course, I'm trained in fertility yoga so I get all the benefits of that. If you're facing fertility challenges, or someone you know is, I can't urge you strongly enough to seek wholistic fertility support. Be the most fertile you can be before you walk through the door of an IVF clinic and maintain that. Our monthly women's yoga retreats are open to limited numbers giving me the capacity to offer prenatal, postnatal and fertility support in our yoga practice. I am trained in all three specialist yogas and have lots of personal experience to draw on! 2pm - 4:30pm February 7. Book on [email protected] Namaste, Sarah x

10.01.2022 Sarah loves her bolster Oh yes I do. There have been times I've chosen to embrace my bolster rather than my betrothed. Have you practiced with a bolster? Or any type of prop? They seem to have a bad name - some think they mean you are just lazing about, others think they are just too much trouble to get in place. But it's my mission to show all the women I work with that props make your practice stronger and a whole lot more lush. Whether it be a bolster, cushion, blanket, st...rap or brick, when you are working the rightly placed prop can set you up in a pose exactly where you are able to and should be. When we are releasing our beloved props reach up, curl around, rise up and support us allowing us to have the ultimate surrender. You can order props online and there are many beautiful ones to choose from. I'm very happy to show you how to make the most of them in my public or private sessions. Love your props! In health and happiness, Sarah x

08.01.2022 Dimity's Babe Hi Sarah Just to let you know that we had a little boy, Seamus Bryan Patrick Field, on Friday at 3:03pm after a really good 7 hour labour. He weighs in at 2.8kg (6'4). We are both going well. The yoga preperation helped so much in terms of the breathing in the pushing stage, as well as keeping calm. Thank you. Dim... Namaste Dimity - I bow to you. I am so happy to hear your babe has arrived safely and that you are both well. Also that your birth experience was positive - positive attitude goes a long way! What a manly handsome name. You all must be so joyful. Enjoy this special time. Sarah x

05.01.2022 Thank you Ms Lola Berry for this one. Love it. Share it. Sx

03.01.2022 When the cup of our mind, body and spirit is full, we then have so much more to give. And when our cup is full, we can give with no negative feelings or resentment, just the joy of being a contribution to ourselves and others. - Kemi Nekvapil

02.01.2022 Whoa baby, have I got a pose for you A delicious opening across the chest and throat, a much needed release through the hips, a wonderful arch through the back.. and all of this while you are laying down with some beautiful music on, a blanket on top of you and an eye pillow in place! Reclined Baddha Konasana or Reclined Bound Angle pose is better than homemade chicken soup coming into winter. I use it as my relaxation pose at the end of a yoga practice, but it's pretty spec...ial in it's own right and I've even done it in bed when I can't get to sleep, just observing the rise and fall of my stomach. If you're pregnant or just want to lush it up use props as pictured or you can do it flat on the floor. Get along to my Holbrook classes this term and I'll show you all the versions. Enjoy. In health and happiness Sarah x

01.01.2022 For my beautiful Holbrook ladies, many of them beginners, who are leaving behind the srtriving, the critique and the comparison and stepping onto their mats with curiosity. Power to you. In health and happiness, Sarah x

01.01.2022 Beautiful women and babes I hope this finds you well, grateful and grounded. It has been almost a year since my family welcomed Stella May and what a wonderful (full of wonder!) year it has been. Joy greater than I ever thought was possible, but also times I've felt such sorrow that I will one day die and leave her on the earth without me or general anxiety and hopelessness about some of the bad things going on for our planet. A year of extremes. I was recently told that grie...f is the flip side of joy and that when your baby is born you gain the capacity for extreme joy, but also extreme grief. I think that fits. Yoga has been a constant companion. I've kept up a home practice, got to some of Smart Yoga's classes and also done a series of Tigress Yoga in Canberra. I've had lovely ladies contacting me almost weekly to check in when H&T classes are starting again. Now I'm very ready to teach. In 2015 I'll be offering monthly mini weekend yoga retreats for women on Saturday afternoons. More details soon. So how are you? I'd love to hear from each and every one of you. Photos would be delicious. And tell me what type of yoga practice you'd like from Her & Them in 2015. Namaste Sarah x

01.01.2022 Hello beautiful women It was our Stella's first birthday a couple of days ago. A huge celebration and expression of gratitude with lots of balloons and cake. I am SO grateful to have her. Everyday. Sometimes so much I feel like I will burst. But she's an exception. There are so many other wonderful things in my life that I take for granted. I get 'busy', my mind closes in, negative thoughts dominate, clarity is lost and gratitude is nowhere to be seen. I have found that a simple daily gratitude practice works wonders for me. Whether it be a form of pre-dinner thanksgiving that the whole family participates in or a silent recognition on my mat at the end of my yoga practice. I never find myself without something precious to celebrate and it really lifts me above the fog. What or who do you have to be grateful for today? Namaste, Sarah x
