They represent and are used as a symbol of eloquence! [according to wikipedia - Eloquence is fluent, forcible, elegant or persuasive speaking. It is primarily the power of ex...pressing strong emotions in striking and appropriate language, thereby producing conviction or persuasion. The term is also used for writing in a fluent style.] In this image, the mermaid is a Supporter - she is part of the presentation of the arms and is essentially supporting it. Supporters are usually granted, and are personal to the grantee. Their use became more common around the 16th century. There are certain groups, organisation and corporations that are not allowed to use Supporters for their arms. This doesnt look like a coat of arms (to me) - but rather a commemorative thing. The Double-Eagle carved in wood would suggest Roman/Byzantine empire, but also countries like Germany, Greece, Serbia, Albania have also used this motif. What is more interesting is the silver coin and the head shown on the coin. Is that a helmet / armour hes wearing, a...nd the quiver of arrows would say hunting or warrior? 05.01.2022 Mottos are one of my most favourite things about Heraldry. Not everyone has a Coat of Arms, and even fewer have a Motto. What Ive found over the years, is for people who have mottos, the words are somehow so eerily relevant to how they identify with themselves today. To think that the family name, carried for hundreds of years, over lineage and countries, is given at birth, and the motto - which came about in a completely different time, place, era can feel so relevant to... now. Often when I tell people what their motto is, they say they get goosebumps. I like that. It feels right. Like an alignment to something old, meant to bring forth a connection to your ancestors, and courage into today. The motto below was for a recent customer. It stood out to me, as being a cry from an era long past. Where men (and women) would rather give it all up, than to sell themselves out for something less, for something they couldnt feel proud or honourable about.
