25.01.2022 I wrote this article after surveying over 100 women and asking them about their experiences with pelvic organ prolapse. https://herasphere.net//10-tips-dealing-pelvic-organ-prol/

24.01.2022 Great job by Grainne, Emma and Tom to get these guidelines up and running (pun intended...). Anyone working regularly with new mums know how little information there is on when it is appropriate for women to return to running after childbirth. Most guidelines have about 10 pages on exercise in pregnancy and then maybe 1-2 paragraphs on the postnatal period (if you're lucky!!). This team spent MONTHS trawling through the literature to find the best evidence available (sadly th...ere isn't a lot, but hopefully this will encourage more research!) as well as speaking to physiotherapists around the globe to get an idea of how we are working with new mums to support them in their return to running. I was thrilled to be involved in a small part (reviewing the content and adding my thoughts/ clinical experience), as I do think this is a fantastic document that has already helped so many women around the world on their postnatal journey. Having it published in the BJSM also helps increase awareness about pelvic health and the important role that pelvic health physiotherapists play.

23.01.2022 I don't offer discounts often...but with all the craziness that is going on right now around the world, I'd love to offer my online pregnancy program for a hugely reduced price. Why? Because exercise is so important in pregnancy, both for mum and bub, and I hate to think that women will miss out because they can't get to their local gym or exercise class. To learn more about how Pregnancy Club can help you, head to : https://herasphere.net/online-program/

21.01.2022 This has been a topic of great discussion in the women's health physio communities for the past few years. This is not to say that menstrual cups are bad or should not be used BUT be careful when you are removing the cup. Release the tension - do NOT just pull the cup or bear down.

21.01.2022 Anyone else got a ninja?

21.01.2022 Thank you Catherine for all that you have done. Xx

21.01.2022 Someone actually said this to me the first time I left house with my newborn (many years ago, no babies in the house now, thankfully). Gratuitous bonus panel in comments.

20.01.2022 Hmmm why do you need to pee every half an hour in the final trimester? Why are you feeling breathless just going for a walk? I wonder... Photo credit : The Continuum Concept

19.01.2022 If you have just had a baby and are seeing the ads for "losing your mummy tummy" "getting your pre-baby body back" "getting bikini-body ready" Please check out my rant from a couple of years back

17.01.2022 Black women are 3-4x as likely to die of childbirth complications than white women. Black babies are 2x likely to die in the first year than white babies. Ther...e is a HUGE gap in breastfeeding support and resources for black breastfeeding mothers. This effects the health outcomes for both mom and baby, and the cycle continues. Something has to change. #blacklivesmatter (Shared from @thesugaberries)

17.01.2022 A fun day in studio filming another free 5-day course for Girls Gone Strong. Any guesses as to what this one is about? Ps school holidays makes for more challenging filming. Caden- shoosh. Stop giggling. Your LEGO is too loud

16.01.2022 "This is not what you had planned. This is not what youd envisioned. There are no visits from friends, no loving doula bringing you soup, no mommy and me yog...a classes, no coffee dates, no stroller walks through the park. There is empty space where you had planned comfort and company. There are long days with no one but your little one to talk to and this big transition to navigate all alone. . I know its lonely, mama. I know the walls of your house feel tight and the days feel so long, and you crave a warm hand on your knee and the soft embrace of a friend. You wish for someone by your side to marvel at this beautiful baby of yours and to wrap an arm around you when the feelings get too big and scary. . We were never meant to do this alone. Motherhood has never been a solitary sport. And yet here we are, in this odd chapter of isolation and distance, with no choice but to do it by ourselves. . But mama, know this- We are alone. Together. You are surrounded all the other mothers who are navigating this tender time in isolation. You are held by all of us who have walked the path before you and who know how much you must be hurting. You are wrapped in the warm embrace of mama earth, as she too settles into this time of slowness and healing. . This too shall pass. And when it does, hugs and coffee dates and visits from friends will taste so much sweeter. Soft kisses on your cheek and arms around your waist and gentle laughter in your ear will be the joyful medicine after this trying time. . Until then, hunker down mama. Find the coziest, warmest spot on your couch, sink into the pile of unfolded laundry, and sleep the Autumn away, with that sweet babe warm on your chest." #Repost @spiritysol See more

15.01.2022 This is well worth a watch. Something that we should be talking about so that women dont have to attempt suicide or wait 12-13 years for a diagnosis!

14.01.2022 Check out this interview on pelvic pain with the amazing Carolyn Vandyken. For those that don't know Carolyn she is a physiotherapist with over 33 years of experience and is based in Canada. She sits in that space between musculoskeletal and pelvic health physiotherapy (like many of us do) and is so incredibly knowledgeable and humble. In this interview, we discuss... - what pelvic pain is and what it might look like - the link between the lumbar spine and pelvic pain - how pelvic floor dysfunction might masquerade as other types of musculoskeletal pain such as low back or groin pain - why pelvic floor screening is so important for all musculoskeletal /sports physiotherapists and fitness professionals to consider and how they might go about it - why consideration of the whole person is so important when helping clients with symptoms of pelvic pain or pelvic floor dysfunction I learnt a lot from talking to her this week and I certainly will be signing up for her course when it is up and running! Check it out and let Antony and I know what you think!

14.01.2022 What do you wish you had discussed with your partner before you had a baby?

14.01.2022 An announcement has been made today by the Australian Government that parents who experience a stillbirth, infant death, as well as families who experience a pr...emature birth will soon have access to 12 months unpaid parental leave. This will bring bereaved parents leave entitlements in line with those of any other new parent in Australia for the first time whilst also acknowledging their parenthood and the deep impact that the death of a baby has on a family. Further details of the draft legislation will be released in the near future and for further discussion. https://www.theaustralian.com.au//6cf80aa358da3972a545803b

12.01.2022 CHEERS! Thank you for your support over the past five years. Just wanted to post to let you all know that this page will be shutting down soon. When I started Herasphere, it was in response to some of my clients wanting an online pregnancy program that they could do from the comfort of their own home. Simple! Or so I thought ;)... Although I loved the process of creating the program and enjoyed getting wonderful feedback from some of the participants, for it to be a truly viable business I had to spend more time and energy on marketing. Which meant more time on social media (screens), which is just not something that I want to do anymore! If I'm honest, my priorities have shifted...and definitely in a good way. I've returned to university to study another Masters Degree (this time in Continence and Pelvic Health), started a podcast (with my wonderful colleague Antony Lo), have had multiple job offers (for in-person work - which I have been LOVING) and have been trying to spend more and more time out in nature...where I am happiest. So it's not a sad farewell for me. I feel grateful to have been able to create something that has been helpful for so many people and it's just time to move on with life. If you would like to keep in touch, you can follow me at https://www.facebook.com/dynamicstrengthphysiotherapy

10.01.2022 This situation is changing rapidly and what is true today may not be so tomorrow. If you are pregnant and worried about COVID-19 here are some things you should... know (as of March 19th 2020). This information is from RANZCOG, ACOG and RCOG - it seems consistent across the board. - VERY small studies have shown that most pregnant women react in a similar way to the virus as non-pregnant women...ie the majority will have symptoms such as fever, sore throat, dry cough. - however previous outbreaks of SARS, MERS and influenza found that pregnant women had higher rates of respiratory complications that their non-pregnant counterparts, so US doctors still consider pregnant women to be in the high-risk population (until we get some more data) - COVID-19 does not seem to spread from mother to foetus or to a newborn via breastmilk. Studies in China showed that they reduced mother to baby transmission via isolating them from each other for 14 days. Many other countries are more in favour of keeping mother and baby together, but practising good hand hygiene and using masks - babies born to mothers with the COVID-19 virus seem to have a higher risk of being born prematurely, but we are not sure why. Those babies had good outcomes and there are no deaths recorded. So what does this mean for you? The most important thing to understand right now is that you should try and keep up to date with the current health guidelines in your area. We are all at different stages in this outbreak, but I recommend pregnant women to err on the side of caution and strictly stick to the rules of social distancing and hand hygiene. Avoid anyone who is ill where possible. Keep in mind that things are changing rapidly and the information that is current today may not be tomorrow. I will attempt to update this page where I can, but what is relevant in Australia is not always going to be relevant elsewhere either. Do your due diligence and know the website for your local health department as well as the college of obs/gynaes. If you have a good relationship with your midwife/doctor, then please ask them if there is anything that you should change about your behaviour. So what about group classes? RANZCOG (Australia) recommend that health professionals consider ceasing all face to face antenatal classes and try to use telehealth for antenatal appointments where possible. Given this information and the aggressive rate of spread of this virus, I think pregnant women should consider moving to online exercise platforms ASAP. There may be some circumstances where group exercise classes are still suitable - eg in some countries where the virus does not have any positive cases or where the class can be performed in very small groups in a large open space - but the question really becomes does the risk outweigh the benefit. You all know how passionate I am about exercise in pregnancy and have been teaching it for almost 10 years now. The benefits are substantial and I want pregnant women to be able to access good quality care around the globe. With that in mind, I have reduced the cost of my online pregnancy program by 40%. Head to https://herasphere.net/online-program/ and type in the code: corona Over the next few weeks, Id also like to share resources from other health and fitness professionals, so please get in touch with me if you can help provide online services to the pregnant population. Were all in this together, so lets look out for one another. Marika
