25.01.2022 I was told practice makes perfect when it comes to taking blood pressure. So I did practice ..on every one in sight and now I'm quick on the draw. Thank you for the great mothers day present Ritu and Zac. It helped detect a serious condition not as yet diagnosed. To the vitalistic herbalist we are connecting to the patient's heart, via their pulse, in a way that lets you feel their living, beating 'life-force'

25.01.2022 Winter Diary of a Dandenong Ranges Herbalist 2019. When the garden you love has a mind of its own it gives you endless gifts. Today in the sun I harvested self seeding Greek spinach, romping clivers and chickweed. All for me to devour!

16.01.2022 Autumn planting underway. Good to get my hands in some dirt! Checked my pantry just incase I'm told to spend some time at home to contemplate my life.( virus). Pumpkins, sweet potatoes, hemp seeds, quinoa, lentils and millet. Garden veg and wild foods- That's the advantage of not mowing all the time. There is so much food out there just growing as weeds! Therapy foods to make sure you have- Raw garlic... Lemons Thyme Rosemary Ginger All warming and supportive of our natural immune system defences. i have miso and sauerkraut also. Yarrow and peppermint herbal infusions can help your body raise it's temperature if a bacteria or virus decides your body is a nice place to live for a while. Just make sure you drink lot of water especially children and keep your bowel open. A high quality Vitamin C I have made fire water and its brewing for 2 weeks- There are some great recipes online. Most importantly spend time playfully and relaxing in our lovely Autumn - this supports your immune system. STRESS ANGER and fighting over food depresses your immune system. Think about it! I plan to make the most of this experience. Looking forward to your stories.

08.01.2022 I have chosen an ancient hawthorn berry tree as the symbol for my herbal medical practice "Herbal Insight." Why? This tree reconnects me to my ancestral linage of Cornish and Irish women herbalists and their love and skill in their local communities. The name "hawthorn" was originally applied to the species native to northern Europe, especially the common hawthorn C. monogyna, and the unmodified name is often so used in Britain and Ireland. The species Crataegus (Hawthorn...) has been used since the middle ages with some accounts going back as far as the first century to Greek herbalist Dioscorides. In the traditional medicine of Europe all parts of the tree were appreciated and utilised: leaves, berries, flowers, and the wood. The blossoms were used as a heart tonic and a diuretic, and the berries and leaves were made into an astringent tea to soothe throats. I consider hawthorn berry to be a superior heart tonic, which I use in therapy to support deep transformation in emotional or spiriual heart treatments. Specifically I have found it helpful for a person with a "broken heart", feeling hurt and deeply wounded. Deep thanks to Georgia Angus, a very talented artist for bringing to life my "May Tree" a symbol of love. xoxo

06.01.2022 Herbalist Diary May 2019 Suzie Nettle Carter The bright orange berry, known as "Devine Fruit" - persimmon, is now being harvested in the Dandenong Ranges and Victoria. I found these two hiding away. They are packed with a rich source of healthy phytochemicals like vitamin A, that aids vision as well as shibuol and betulinic acid that strengthens immunity and curtails free radicals. I just love them and they make wonderful smoothies that curb sugar cravings. Eat them all up!

02.01.2022 A garden concept is coming into life for my herbalist clinic. "Luna's" garden will be home to traditional Celtic women's herbs. It is evoking wonderful playfulness in me as I call to the herbs that women have used throughout their lives to maintain and restore their feminine physical and emotional energy. I'm ever mindful of the giant native forest of my beloved Dandenong Ranges that surrounds me. Ever striving to also link into the blessing of the land I call home. The task is now underway!

01.01.2022 Household medicine is at the heart of the Celtic Master Herbalist tradition. Apple cider vinegar and cayenne pepper has been made into fermented tonics in household kitchens since the time of the Ancient Greeks. Hippocrates used it as an antibiotic, cardiovascular, antifungal and immune treatment. It has been handed down through generations of families because it is easy to make and it works. This therapy treatment has evolved to be called Fire Cider, named by the naturopat...h Rosemary Gladstar in the 1970’s. There are many variations on the base ingredients reflecting where people live and the plants they have access to. Every Autumn I make a new batch from my gardens production of chillies and horseradish from my Polish Mother in laws garden ( and soon my own). This year I’m making extra for all my family. Here’s the one I love making. 1. Grate or chop 2- 4 red chillies of your choice (I like it spicy but please start on small amounts to meet your personal balance in taste) cup fresh ginger 1 bulb garlic cup fresh or dried horseradish 1 onion 1 lemon 1 orange 2 Tbsp each rosemary and thyme 3 teaspoons cinnamon 1 litre of apple mother cider vinegar 2. Combine all ingredients in a one-litre glass jar 3. Cover jar with muslin before putting on lid to stop corrosion or better still use stainless steel lids. 4. Store in a cool, dark cupboard 5. Give a shake daily to extract all the goodies over the next 2- 3 months 6. Strain and squeeze through cheese cloth into a new clean jar 7. Add 1/8 cup apple juice concentrate if you find it too intense. 8. Consume as needed 1 2 tablespoons daily in water. Please consult your health professional before taking this tonic. Pregnant women and people on blood thinners are advised not to take this tonic. Rosy cheeks and a twinkle in your eye. I dedicate this to our beloved Ritu and Jean who inspires me. xox
