25.01.2022 In the Museum there is this large photo of some men holding up snakes and crocodiles ...... Mollie Shanahan told this story of the photograph when she was young and her father owned the Halifax Hotel ..... Mollie's Piano is there too - it survived the 1927 flood..... HALIFAX TOURIST ATTRACTION 1912 STYLE Mollie Shanahan (then Dolan) remembers watching the carpet snake and crocodile wrestlers posing for this picture in the HALIFAX HOTEL backyard when she was only eight years o...ld. The photo was lent to the Register by Hec Masters of Abergowrie. From the left, the intrepid snake and saurian enthusiasts are - Jack Masters (Hec’s Father), Alex Campbell, Jack Williamson, Ned Jacobsen, and unidentified man (possibly Hec Master’s Uncle) Jack Taylor, a character who was known as Admiral, and Ted Dolan (Mrs. Shanahan’s father). Note the girth of the brute coiled like a motor car tyre round Jack Taylor’s right shoulder. The photographer was Les Friend. Story shared by Ann Dumbleton......

17.01.2022 Did you know that at the Museum in the Parlor Room - there is a White Piano that came from the McDonagh Family. The House (Pictured) of Walter and Annie McDonagh was built in 1925. It was the largest private home in North Queensland of its time with a 76 ft frontage and 15 ft wide. It had six bedrooms with a large lounge and dining room, verandah all around. The kitchen was detached from the house with a covered walkway to it. People would come in their sulky's to see the... rose gardens in the shape of hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades. Dances were held each Saturday night. The brothers would play for the dances. The instruments were piano, violin, banjo, saxophone and clarinet. The children would go to school in a sulky and take a loaf of bread with them to make sandwiches at lunch time. In 1927, the big flood the McDonagh family were on the verandah pushing cattle away so the house would not be washed away, after the flood - four dead cattle were found under the house. They had three maids and one gardener by the name of Diddy. There were 13 children - Walter, Eddie, Bill, Victor, Mary, Jack, Joe, Nellie, Margie, Annie, Patty, Eileen and Allen. Eileen died at the age of two when she had eaten poisoned berries. Only one McDonagh remains today - Patty. The House was situated on Warrens Hill Road - but now at the back of the Noorla Hotel ...... (Story written by Miss R. M. and photo’s and story submitted by Ann Dumbleton)
