25.01.2022 Everyone in the Herberton area would know by now that there are controlled burns happening around our town. TRC and DNRME will be burning around the State School and the transfer station today. Our turn is coming tomorrow (Wednesday) when the Great Northern will be control burned.

24.01.2022 Where would we be without our volunteers? Well Herberton wouldn't even have the famous Herberton Mining Museum and Malanda wouldn't have the fabulous Malanda Falls Visitor Centre. Who would tell our tourists about our tree kangaroos, our waterfalls and rainforest, our bushwalks? Who would answer all the history enquiries we get, who would research our Herberton families? Our volunteers are special - we are very grateful and we treasure every single one.... Happy International Volunteers Day See more

24.01.2022 The Jacarandas in Herberton are simply stunning right now They've all been flowering long enough to have that spectacular purple carpet underneath. It must be time for a drive this weekend!

24.01.2022 What a perfect day to head up to Herberton! The walks are stunning, the Herberton Mining Museum is open, and the Tinlander is running! Not to mention the Historic Village Herberton, the Herberton Spy & Camera Museum and our lovely cafes in our heritage listed main street. It all makes for a great day out, and the dog is welcome everywhere too!

24.01.2022 The Railway boys are busy getting ready for passengers tomorrow. Yes the Tinlander is running again all weekend from 10am! Come on up to Herberton!

23.01.2022 Volunteers from Herberton Mining Museum and Ravenshoe Visitor Centre have been working together to digitise a set of photos and magazine articles from the Ravenshoe RSL collection. The Ravenshoe Visitor Centre will be using them in an up-coming new exhibition telling the story of the thousands of soldiers based around Ravenshoe during WW2. If your family has photos from this period the Ravenshoe Visitor Centre would be very interested to see them. They are particularly looking for photos that are distinctly Ravenshoe scenes, for example showing well known buildings or landscapes. If you can help contact the Centre on 40892243 or email [email protected]

23.01.2022 Grades 7 and 8 from Herberton State School did the Denbigh Road Fire Trail last week. Its a pretty big climb but look at the view - so worth it!

23.01.2022 Just a reminder the trails will be closed this afternoon. Were getting a tidy up!

22.01.2022 Happy National Volunteers Week to our amazing, awesome, fantastic, special, fabulous Herberton Mining Museum Volunteers. We hope you have a beautiful week and that you enjoy your Thyme plant! Thank you for all you do. We cant wait to have you back and the doors open again!

22.01.2022 Thanks for the recommendation Katherine, we appreciate it and we're glad you enjoyed our Museum

21.01.2022 Herberton is getting its best dress on ready for Saturday night. Lights going up today thanks to our generous community and local businesses pulling together. Can’t wait to see them lit on Saturday night for our Twilight Markets.

21.01.2022 We are getting ready to re-open the Herberton Mining Museum... hooray! That means we have openings for new volunteers... hooray again! How would you like to come and join us? 21.01.2022 Okay Herberton, lets get this show on the road!

20.01.2022 Here we go.....

20.01.2022 Can you help decorate our town this Christmas? Herberton is becoming known for our lovely Christmas display and our Twilight Market. If you can donate some decorations or some time to make some eco-friendly ones, either would be appreciated! See Karen at the Lollyshop for details, or to book a stand at the Market.

20.01.2022 Can anyone help?

19.01.2022 The perfect Christmas card to remind those far away of the Tablelands... a singing bird card. The range includes Magpies, Golden Whistlers, Butcher Birds and of course Kookaburras. We have a great range of Christmas gift ideas as well, perfect little sparkly presents that are easy to send and locally made.

19.01.2022 Our volunteer photographer Sherrie has been helping Ravenshoe Visitor Centre with their new photographic display. If you're in Ravenshoe pop in and have a look.

18.01.2022 Some more great shots from our in-house photographer extraordinaire Sherrie-Ann Cockell. All of these photos become part of our archive database.

17.01.2022 Why does every museum need a freezer? Well, turns out freezing is a good way to kill the greeblies without damaging your precious artefacts! And why are we so excited? Because thanks to Mazlin Electrical Services Pty Ltd in Townsville we now have a brand new freezer for doing just that! Every Tablelander knows that the Mazlin family name is synonymous with Tablelands history, and chances are some of our Mazlin family archives will soon be getting the freezer treatment.

16.01.2022 Work available at our local Herberton 5 Star Supermarket...

13.01.2022 We have great gift ideas and some beautiful locally hand made cards for Christmas. Pop up and have a look.

12.01.2022 We have just received grant funding for a Significance Assessment of our collection. Once this is completed we will know which of our artefacts are of local, state or national significance. And we believe we may have one item that is World significant! Fingers crossed that the experts agree with us. Pop up to the Mining Museum and see if you can pick what our world significant item is #herberton #herbertonmuseum #MiningMuseum

11.01.2022 This is a really terrific old film from Queensland archives, it shows the battery in Herberton plus the tin dredge, probably Tableland Tin Number 2 dredge that worked around Mt Garnet.

10.01.2022 At the Herberton Mining Museum we are looking forward to the 12th June when Queensland moves to stage 2 and Museums are allowed to open. And when we do well have a lovely new map to hand out, so that visitors can make sure they see everything there is to see here! What do you think? We love it, thanks Nettie O Design

10.01.2022 You know spring is coming when the Flower Show is coming up!

10.01.2022 "Great place. So happy we went there, lots of things to look at. Definately worth a visit." Thanks for the recommendation Ash Palmer, we love making peoples day!

10.01.2022 Irvinebank is opening!

10.01.2022 These photos are from the James Cook Museum in Cooktown, which of course has strong connections to Herberton through the Sisters of Mercy. The Museum is actually housed in the old Convent. The first photo is the fascinating childrens staircase which was at one stage taken to Herberton and then returned in 1999. The plaque speaks of the evacuation of the nuns during WW2, when they moved to Herberton never to return. Our two communities have strong historical connections.

10.01.2022 Come check out our museum, recommended by the best!....

09.01.2022 What could possibly make our walks even more fabulous than they already are? Our new plaques, thats what! The plaques identify some of the unique plant species you can see along the way. This one is extra special because its named for the family of one of our volunteers. Northern Peppermint only grow in a very small area around Herberton and Kaban, so we are so lucky to have these really special trees right here on The Great Northern.

08.01.2022 A great old photo...

08.01.2022 These mysterious piles of stones started to appear a few years back. We call it The Valley of the Stones. They are along a creek on one of our Fire Trails. Do any locals know the story behind them?

07.01.2022 This week the Herberton Mining Museum was gifted a valuable book for our growing reference library, as a "thank you for your assistance in supplying data, information and company drill" to the Geological Survey of Queensland. Pictured is Friedrich von Gnielinski of Technical Services Division - Department of Resources handing the book "Geology of Queensland" to Ivan Searston of the Herberton Mining Museum. 07.01.2022 Heres a great way we can help our Atherton-Herberton Historic Railway Our Historic Railways deserve Government support, they bring money, jobs and pride to small towns.

07.01.2022 Hey Herberton, due to one of our volunteers having a car accident we are looking for someone to help out on our front counter one afternoon a week. Its just 2 and a half hours, 12 til 2.30, at the moment with our shorter opening hours. Can you help us out? If youre interested in telling our visitors about our fabulous little town then please get in touch - you can send a pm or phone us on 40963474 for more info. Full training provided, no experience necessary! Happy days! PS our regular volunteer is recuperating but okay, thank goodness

06.01.2022 Hooray, its Friday! What to do this weekend??? Well thats easy.... load up the kids and the dog and the picnic basket and come on up to Herberton! The Herberton Mining Museum is now open 10am to 2pm, 7 days a week!

06.01.2022 We are so proud. Our thanks to Queensland State Library Foundation, and to Dr. Jo Wills of Queensland Museum for nominating us.

06.01.2022 The State Library of Queensland wrote a beautiful article about us in their November newsletter. You can read it here... Thanks to all at State Library of Queensland for your support.

06.01.2022 Thanks for visiting Jayne, and for your lovely comments. I see you liked our wild everlasting daisies too

06.01.2022 Breaking news from Eacham Historical Society and the Millaa Millaa Museum. It is fantastic to see our fellow Tableland historians forging ahead!

05.01.2022 Last week we were very pleased to host Mayor Rod Marti and Councillor Annette Haydon. The volunteers showed them through our Museum displays, Research Room and Community Archive. Our Museum is a great example of what can be achieved by dedicated volunteers. Tablelands Regional Council Atherton-Herberton Historic Railway

04.01.2022 Hmmmm..... what to do tomorrow Well if you come up to Herberton in the morning you can catch the Herberton Flower Show. Now in its 74th year this fair-dinkum old-fashioned flower show is the real deal, with spectacular flowers, beautiful photography and clever craft. And it is fiercely competitive! You still have time, its on at the Herberton Shire Hall until lunchtime.... with Cliff Elms and Pam Egan See more

03.01.2022 Then and now. Workers at the Great Northern early last century, and the machine now standing quiet. When I walk through the Great Northern mine site what strikes me is the peace, stillness and tranquility. Its a beautiful spot. And I always think of that time a hundred years ago... men yelling, machinery hammering and blowing steam, explosions from dynamite ringing through the bare hills... a hive of noise and industry.

03.01.2022 Right from the early days of Herberton rock drilling competitions were a part of the social scene. Champion rock drillers were heroes of the town, and large amounts of money were wagered. Men would work in the mines all day and then train in the afternoons. Rock drilling was a serious sport! The Herberton and District Rock Drill Club was formed in 1983 and competitions were run during the annual Herberton Tin Festival. The Battle of the Pubs was an annual face-off between ...the Royal Hotel Herberton and the Australian Hotel Irvinebank. The Herberton Rock Drill Clubs equipment and trophies are a huge addition to our collection here. Recently the compressor and the concrete storage shed were moved to their forever homes in a dedicated display that one day may come to life again with rock drill demonstrations. The Clubs trophy collection makes an impressive display inside our museum - they are part of our history and are a valuable addition to the collection at the Herberton Mining Museum and Visitor Information Centre. 03.01.2022 We're lucky to have such a beautiful spot to do our remembering. Our thanks to the boys from TRC and the Herberton Garden Club who all maintain it.

03.01.2022 We need you! Right now we have openings on our front desk on a Saturday. If you love talking to people, especially about Herberton and our Tablelands then this could be for you. Get in touch - either message this page, flick us an email [email protected] or phone 40963474. Come and join our happy and award-winning team! We'd love to have you.

02.01.2022 Following on from yesterdays post about the troops that were stationed here during WWII... Did you know at the peak there were more than 100,000 troops in our Tablelands area? This regiment must have been quite pleased to be stationed at this beautiful spot at Elms Road West, Wondecla.

02.01.2022 The beginning of the Fire Trails. Call into the Mining Museum for maps before you head out.

02.01.2022 Our grounds dont stay looking this spectacular by themselves. We have a team of volunteers who look after our whole 24 hectares. And with all these trees we have a lot of leaves!

01.01.2022 Volunteers at the Herberton Mining Museum gathered last week for a very special and slightly delayed celebration of their John Oxley Library Community History Award. The volunteers were joined by Councillor Annette Haydon and Councillor Kevin Cardew, as well as Mayor Rod Marti who did the honours. The prestigious Award was presented to the Volunteer Team for their huge project at the end of last year that has resulted in the creation of a catalogued and accessible community research area; a managed collections management room that is dedicated to accessions, cataloguing and digitisation; and a new archival storage facility, dedicated to our region's archival heritage.

01.01.2022 Ivan is an important part of our volunteer team - having been here since day one his vision has driven how our museum has evolved. Here he is speaking about how our Research Team contribute to our museum displays.

01.01.2022 Great story Cairns Local News! You can't beat the atmosphere at a station as a steam train pulls in, and we can't wait for Herberton's steam train to be chugging along the line!
