And especially after all the extreme weather. We went into Christmas with no prep for Christmas or Christmas grocery shopping done. So a special big thanks to all our customers at Helensvale farmer market. And Cleveland farmers markets. Your purchases made a beautiful Christmas possible for little miss 3.... I wish that you all have a wonderful time over christmas. And your time off is fantastic. Much love Heather and Mia See more

23.01.2022 Coming soon. Mini capsicum (snacksicums)

23.01.2022 My "lemonicious fruit tree" absolutely covered in pollinators. Gorgeous little native bees with little golden ugg boots on their feet. Honey bees too getting in on the action. And a couple of blue banded bees (the speed racers of the garden) to quick for me to capture. But sweet as. The chickens are out free ranging. Our guardian dog sitting with half an eye on them and polishing off his breakfast. And all the seeding and watering done before the heat of the day sets in.

22.01.2022 Rocket Microgreens. These are mildly spicy and are believed to have a tonic effect. They're the perfect addition to your salad mix. And I often use them as a garnish over meals. Chicken and rocket wraps are the bomb for lunches on the go. So easy to pick up and have on hand for greens throughout the week. Pro tip: You can even grow these on to true leaf stage. And remember to add a tray of water underneath. Bottom watering is definitely the way to go. Morning sunshine afternoon shade position. And when its all over tip your pot out into the garden. ( often you'll get volunteers come up )

22.01.2022 Green Lacewing also known as the Aphid Lion is an amazing beneficial predatory insect that is remarkable in any gardening or far. After a few days, the eggs hat...ch and tiny larvae emerge which are also known as aphid lions" because of their voracious appetite. The larvae have sickle-shaped jaws (mandibles) with which they pierce prey and suck out body juices. Adults have chewing mouthparts. Adults are poor fliers, active at night and feed on pollen, nectar and honeydew (the exudate of aphids and other sucking insects). Some species are predaceous as adults to a limited extent. The larvae, called "aphid lions", are extremely carnivorous and predaceous on many soft-bodied insects and mites, including insect eggs, thrips, mealybugs, immature whiteflies and small caterpillars. Larvae have sickle-shaped jaws that contain tubes with which they can inject prey with a paralyzing venom and then suck out the body fluids. They can consume over 200 aphids or other prey per week. There is no other better predator known to consume vast quantities of eggs and the soft bodies of aphids, mealy-bugs, spider mites, leafhopper nymphs, caterpillar eggs, scales, thrips, and white-flies. The lacewing larvae attack the eggs of most pests and, if the bodies are not to hard and fast moving, will attack the adult pest stage as well. Use lacewing eggs, larvae for greenhouses and gardens. Larvae will only feed for 1-3 weeks before they become adults (eating only nectar and honeydew). Use approximately 10 lacewing eggs, larvae per plant or 1000 eggs per 200 square feet. After a few days, the eggs hatch and tiny larvae emerge. The larvae are gray-brown in color and newly hatch are very tiny. Similar in appearance to an alligator with pincers, the lacewing larvae vigorously attacks its prey, injects a paralyzing venom, and draws out the body fluids of its helpless victim. Depending on climate conditions, the adults will live for about four to six weeks, feeding only on nectar, pollen and honeydew. If these food sources are not avalable, it will simply leave the area and lay its eggs elsewhere.

22.01.2022 Radish Microgreens are a spicy, slightly hot nutritious sprout. I love these on sandwiches. The tender leaves are rich in vitamins A, B1, B2, C, E and K. It also contains minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, plus carotene, chlorophyll, amino acids, antioxidants and protein 35%. It is believed to stimulate the immune system.

21.01.2022 Imagine what would happen if we all did this?

20.01.2022 Nasturtium, a generous carer for wasps and bees. In return the bees polinate her flowers and parasitic wasps take her hungry caterpillars. A favourite border plant #nasturtium #sentience

19.01.2022 Rocket microgreens (omg the taste of fresh cut). No food miles. At peak nutrition. These little greens are such a flavour bomb. Made roast chicken and rocket wraps with cherry tomatoes from the lovely girls at Helensvale farmers market. Their cherry tomatoes are outstanding both orange ones and red mini ones. Yum. So good my little girl snacks on them like smarties. And put together some avo/ rocket and prawns from the Helensvale seafood fella. Quick snack in the arvo. #support local producers and growers

19.01.2022 Edible flowers.. from cake decorations for high teas. To kids cupcakes for fairy parties. Even for that added touch of pretty ice cubes for that girls night/ cocktail party. Dianthus and violas are edible delights. No edible kitchen garden should be without flowers. # save the bees... #love your pollinators #food for nativebees See more

18.01.2022 Sunflower Microgreens make a nutritious, delicious, crunchy sprout. Cut them before the true leaves appear at about 7 to 10 cm high. When you take your living pot home place a saucer of water underneath to bottom water. And snip fresh as required.

18.01.2022 Today we are at the Helensvale farmers market from 6 am till 11 am.

17.01.2022 We would like to take this time to recognize the passing of a great seed saver and bioneer. for those of you who are growing glass jem corn, this is the gentlem...an who had made it. We would like to thank the great folks at Natures Little Recyclers for bringing his passing to our attention Carl L. Barnes June 18, 1928 April 16, 2016 Family, friends, and the seed saving community mourn the passing of Carl ‘White Eagle’ Barnes, who died in Grove, Oklahoma on Saturday morning, April 16. Carl was known for his years of work with heritage corn, enabling many Native tribes to recover and reunite with their sacred seeds. Carl was of half Cherokee, half Scotch-Irish ancestry, and was born in the original farmhouse in the Panhandle of Oklahoma. His father had moved the family west, acquiring land and setting up farming on the High Plains. Carl spent his childhood on this homestead, and the family lived through the ‘Dust Bowl’ years, staying to survive the ordeal, rather than leave as many did at that time in our history. As a youth, Carl began to seek out his Cherokee roots, and to explore the knowledge of his ancestors and of Native American traditions in general. Much of this quest centered on the ceremonies surrounding planting, harvest, and honoring of the seeds. Later in his adult years Carl worked with the Cooperative Extension Service, and several years serving with the Kansas Highway Patrol, at the same time continuing to work the farm, along with his wife Karen, where they raised a family. In the course of growing some of the older corn varieties still being farmed at that time, Carl began noticing ancestral types re-appearing in his crops As he isolated these, he found that many of them matched up with traditional corns that had been lost to various Native tribes, particularly those peoples who had been relocated to what is now Oklahoma during the 1800’s. Thus he was able to re-introduce specific corn types to the elders of those tribes, and this helped their people in reclaiming their cultural and spiritual identities. Their corn was, to them, literally the same as their blood line, their language, and their sense of who they were. Carl went on to acquire and exchange other traditional corn seed from a variety of people he had befriended around the country. To those that he met, he became known by his spiritual name White Eagle. Through being of service with the seeds, Carl awakened to the more esoteric nature of corn and its mystical relationship to human beings. This led to further insights, which he shared widely, inspiring many people over the years. His philosophy and teaching could be summed up in three words he repeated so often ‘The Seed Remembers’. After the passing of his wife Karen in 2005, and later his son A.V. Barnes, Carl stepped back from public life and encouraged the next generation to carry on the work of seed-keeping. In 2012, Carl became known for having originated a unique rainbow colored corn that became known as ‘glass gem’, which has since become an inspiration in our current-day seed saving movement. Carl will be remembered for his generosity, wit and humor, and for the seeds he passed to willing hands. These will continue to multiply beyond his time, to nourish and enrich the coming generations. I stand in a radiant Glory. My roots in the heart of Mother Earth. My crown in the clouds of Father Sky. The Four Winds encircle me in spirals of Love. One going up, then down, One going down, then up. They meet in the Center of Complete Perfection-- The Human Stalk of Corn. --Carl Barnes

17.01.2022 We have sweet potatoe "slips" available at the moment. Such an easy plant to grow. And ready in 3 to 4 months to dig up. You can also harvest tender growing tips for a green veg. Just saute them with butter and garlic.

16.01.2022 It is a beautiful, still, clear and cool morning here at the Tamborine Mountain Country Markets. No smoke smell, no dust. Remember to avoid the Canungra Road, but come up and enjoy the day!

13.01.2022 Edible flowers available tomorrow at the new Helensvale farmers market $5 a pot. Freeze them in icecubes. Decorate your cupcakes for the kids. Or bring those desserts to the next level. Dianthus are truely beautiful and hardy. Pro Tip: Trim plants down to a couple of cms after a years production to reshoot for another season.

12.01.2022 This is what a dying bee looks like when it has been poisoned - they die with their tongues sticking out. I have lots of these in the grass in front of my hive.... See the pollen on her legs? That would be dandelion pollen. This is what happens when we participate in a culture that sees dandelions in a yard as a failure of citizenry rather than a symbol that you recognize that vanity and conformity are not more important than survival. Please stop spraying your weeds. See more

12.01.2022 Woke up to new addition this morning ( Mia hoping for a little twin sister or brother (her words) for the new little chick. And planting of zuchini into our new no dig garden. Totally love working in the cool of the morning or late arvo. Our no dig beds have been filled with newspapers on the bottom, grass clippings straight from the mower, dynamic lifter, debris from cleaning out the hen house, leaves and rakings from around the house and prime hay. And watered in with seaweed concentrate and worm juice.

11.01.2022 A while ago I came across a asian grower of medicinal plants. This is a utube video on gold coin grass that I stock. Which I thought may be of interest. I usually add a couple of leaves into my green juices. And incorporate a blend of wheatgrass, cucumber, celery, dandelion and gold coin leaves. I usually start my day with one of these several mornings of the week. I found it very interesting the approach to cleaner unprocessed real food. To a better health outcome. Get your... food as free of chemicals/toxins as you can and let it function well. It was one of my main reasons to grow fresh. I believe in nurturing and feeding the soil. To put the goodness into the soil. That puts those micro nutrients into the food your eating. I believe that wholesome natural food translates to your healthy gut biome. And makes for a healthy you. I love growing and using herbs and vegetables. And I love that they are as clean as I can get them. See more

11.01.2022 After the two days back to back markets. Today's all about getting grounded again. Time in the garden. Ahhhh. The seaweed and worm juice went on the garden beds and seedlings and herbs. Time for us to potter around. Tend to the fruit trees and plant some more. And time to rest. Blueberries are going in today. Much to little miss 3's delight. I'm a big fan of growing. And it's amazing what you can produce on a small area. And you know how it's been grown. You know there's not...hing nasty ever sprayed. The biggest rule is "feed the soil". We have Columbian whyndottes and pekins for eggs. All the scraps go to them. Then we collect delicious free range eggs. We raise mealworms for them and worms from the worm farm. Make compost tea for the garden. All the straw and clippings go into building up the no dig gardens to and producing food and a few edible flowers. Our food shopping is really reduced cause a lot of it we grow ourselves. Little miss 3 loves the little critters she finds amongst the plants. And I love teaching her how everything has a place in the garden. Our two sleepy possums sleep in the shed high up in the rafters. A mother and baby much to my daughters delight. When the hot weather hit we laughted.... they were streched out tails and paws dangling trying to catch any breeze. More like a couple of lazy cats. Ahhh home time... The week will be spent propagating and seeding new baby plants. And working in the nursery. Checking the seed bank to decide on what to grow. And getting ready for next weekends markets. Pic of little miss 3 tending to her potatoe bed. Have a great day. See more
