23.01.2022 THE SMOKE THAT HEALS BODY AND SOUL Yesterday, I talked about how Mugwort will smolder like incense, and how, at this time of year, I take the dead leaves from t...he bottom of the plant, roll them into a ball, and light it. I let the fragrant smoke rise as a sign of gratitude to the spirits of nature, much as Asian cultures use incense. Often when harvesting Autumn Olives, Crabapples or other medicinal foods, I will have my ball of Artemisia incense sitting in the tree, resting on a branch, or somewhere close by, to remind me of the spiritual importance of food gathering, so that I fully appreciate the gifts that nature brings us. Burning mugwort in the form of a smudge, much as the indigenous peoples have done for centuries, helps bring balance in both a spiritual and practical sense. The smoke from the plant is capable of killing many of the airborne bacteria that may bring sickness to our lives, whilst perfuming the air. It is an ideal way of purifying a sick room (driving out all the evil spirits). The Chinese have been aware of the medicinal uses of Mugwort (Ai Ya) for centuries, and even use it in acupuncture,in the form of moxibustion, where the glowing herb is held over special points on the body. By this means, midwives were (and are) able to help turn a breach baby during birth - a miraculous event in its own right. The effects of Mugwort smoke are quite remarkable in many ways. I once burned some at a party and had to send half my guests home with some of the dried herb. They had all experienced a sense of calm and relaxation from the experience. I make use of these properties at times when I am too wired to sleep at night. I will fill a small pipe with the dried herb and smoke it. Within a very short time, I am relaxed and ready to sleep. Then, with a bouquet of Mugwort beside my pillow, I have delightful and vivid dreams.

21.01.2022 The "good" ladybugs are the ones that stay in your garden devouring all the insects that invade your plants, seeking shelter outdoors when the weather is cold; ...the "bad" ladybugs have the same voracious appetite for aphids and other destructive bugs, but, unfortunately, they like to come indoors when it gets cold. When they do come inside, they emit a terrible odor and leave large yellow stains around your house before they die. See more

20.01.2022 What a wonderful world! This beautiful flower mantis was found in Nkutu Valley, KwaZulu Natal, South Africa on Sunday. Experts said she looked like a pregnant ...female as you could see her broadening frilled edged belly beginning to extend sideways. She loves to hunt bees that visit the flowers of herbs such as purple and rose pelargonium, she sits at the flowers and hunts using her camouflage. We have named her Miss Frilly Pantaloons but she is more formally known as Miss Pseudocreobotra Wahlbergi (Spiny flower mantis) Please note these photos have not been photoshopped, refer to Miss Frilly Pants film debut in the video section of our page. www.waterfallretreatcentre.com See more

07.01.2022 Violet has a rich tradition in Europe, where it has been used for centuries as a pulmonary remedy for dry hacking cough. . It is often recommended for bronchit...is and whooping cough, along with the roots of marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) and licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra). . 07.01.2022 Welcome to Day 3 of #gutweek on Instagram! Im posting daily about herbs that help digestion and often mental health, because mind and body are connected! . I...f we are what we eat, it makes sense that the gut and its processes would be central to our health. Science is increasingly understanding that what goes on in your gut is more than just a gut feeling. Theres actually a direct link from the belly to the brain. . In this video I talk about a common weed that is both food and gut medicine: burdock (Arctium lappa.) The root is great in stirfries or ferments, and also works well as tea, tincture or acetracta. . Medicinally, burdock supports optimal liver function. Thats important because the liver is one of the key organs helping us process wastes. Supporting the liver can help with acne, PMS, digestion and more. . Burdock root is high in inulin, a starch that feeds our gut microflora, which in turn helps keep our guts, immune system and mood strong and resilient. . Having robust and diverse gut flora (aka the microbiome) helps us get the most out of our food, delivering nutrients we cant extract on our own. A healthy microbiome also is can improve depression and anxiety. . Got questions? Give me a shout in the comments. . And if you know someone who could use some help with their digestion and mood, please share the video! . . P.S. Want more like this? Please check out my new(ish) YouTube channel. 04.01.2022 I am in south east Queensland, Australia. It is winter here. Where are you ? How is your weather ?

04.01.2022 I hope you are all keeping well and staying safe in these strange days. I am sharing tips from Google for supporting and boosting your immune systems as this is the best way to stay healthy at this time, besides of course, taking all the safety precautions of hand washing and no touching your face. Staying inside is helpful and reducing your time in public is also very helpful. We each have varying limitations on our movements at this time. I do hope you can still access your herbal garden or herbal supplies. Best wishes

03.01.2022 Broccoli sprouts are a concentrated source of sulforaphane, a phytochemical that boosts phase II liver detoxification, along with a whole host of other health b...enefits. Growing your own broccoli sprouts is really easy, just follow these simple steps: -Place broccoli seeds in a large wide mouth jar, or a special sprouting jar or tray. Add cool water and soak for 12 hours in a cool dry place -Rinse and drain the seeds. Store in the jar or sprouting tray in a dark place for 3 days, rinsing and draining 3 times per day -Place in indirect sunlight for 2-3 days, continuing to rinse and drain 2-3 times a day -Harvest when most of the sprouts have turned green You can eat your broccoli sprouts raw in salads or sandwiches, add them to smoothies, blend them into a dip or add to stir-fries at the last moment. If you start a new batch of broccoli sprouts every few days, you will have a continuous harvest available to enjoy!

03.01.2022 Gardens will be very important in the coming days, not just for herbs but to restock your supplies. Many seed companies are overbooked at the moment and are no longer taking orders. Remember to keep the seeds from any foods you would like to grow in your garden and begin to get ready for planting etc. Best wishes to you all at this time.

01.01.2022 Welcome to day 5 of gut week. Today Ive got an herbal preparation to share with you! . As those of you on my email list know, Im not a very make-y person. I s...ort of stall when it comes to anything that hits me as cooking. . (Yes, I do make food for myself. But its a struggle. Im writing a whole book about it.) . But some things are so simple and delicious, its just silly not to do them. And what Ive got for you today is one of those. . In this video I make a drinking vinegar, commonly known as a shrub or technically an acetracta (vinegar extraction.) These are a tasty way to get the medicinal benefits of herbs in a palatable package. . Here I grabbed some backyard blackberries and spearmint, smooshed them together and added a high-quality apple cider vinegar, covered and labeled the jar and called it good. . I didnt use a recipe. And I didnt wait very long to start adding dollops of the liquid to cold bubbly water a perfect way to beat the heat. . Drinking vinegars have gotten trendy, and thats not a terrible thing. . The vinegar alone helps jump-start digestion. It supports stomach acid which, counterintuitively, can reduce reflux. . Good apple-cider vinegar (ACV) is loaded with vitamins and antioxidants. The mother youll see in some brands contains probiotics to tend that internal garden! . ACV draws out and preserves plant medicines. Vinegar extracts are a great alternative to tinctures for folks avoiding alcohol. . Mint is a traditional tummy tea, its aromatic compounds helping gently stimulating digestion while taming gas and bloating. . The blackberries are here for flavor, color and a dose of antioxidant goodness. . Fizzy-water shrubs can help folks beat soda addictions. And make no mistake, sugary sodas are seriously addictive and terrible for your health! . When youre ready to make a shrub, remember that the best herbal medicines are the ones you HAVE and WILL USE. . Have you tried drinking vinegars before? What did you think? If you make them yourself, what ingredients do you love? . . #gutweek #gardenmedicine #drinkingvinegars #microbiome #acidreflux #ACV #herbalist #naturopathicdoctor #naturopathicrevolution #applecidervinegar See more
