25.01.2022 ENGLISH // This term in Year 8 English, the class has been studying a unit on picture books. We have explored the powerful ways in which these texts combine both visual and written techniques to communicate stories and ideas to a variety of age groups and audiences. To better understand the thoughtful and detailed work that goes into picture books, and also improve their collaborative skills, the class were challenged to create their own picture book, based on Shaun Tan's awa...rd winning book The Red Tree, a book about feelings feelings that can not always be simply expressed in words. Year 8 completely re-wrote the text, carefully choosing their own wording and designing detailed illustrations full of symbolic meaning, all tied together by a puzzle-piece motif representing a person's quest for meaning and completeness. The resulting text is called The Missing Piece and a printed copy is available for students to read in the school library. See more

25.01.2022 GEOGRAPHY // A compulsory element of the Geography course, Year 10 students are to conduct fieldwork. We visited Cronulla to look at current coastal management issues in relation to our topic ‘Environmental Change and Management’. Students investigated coastal processes by measuring and studying elements of a natural/re- established sand dune, such as size & shape, vegetation type & cover and wind speed. Identification of landforms and examination of land use in the surrounding areas was undertaken using aerial photographs or cadastral maps. Historical photographs were used to examine the effects of human development and storm erosion processes on the sand dunes. Detailed investigation of past and present management strategies were undertaken.

It is a brilliant way to start the Year 11 course as this module is not ...limited to any prescribed texts. Instead students immerse themselves in a myriad of different text types. There will be intensive and close reading of quality texts from a variety of modes and media. Ultimately students will further develop the skills and knowledge necessary to appreciate, understand, analyse and evaluate how and why texts convey complex ideas, relationships, endeavours and scenarios. You dont have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says theyre not OK. By knowing what to say you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before theyre in crisis, which can make a really positive difference to their life. If you... feel like somethings not quite the same with someone you know theres something going on in their life or you notice a change in what theyre saying or doing - trust that gut instinct and take the time to ask them Are you OK? If someone says theyre not OK, make time to listen, encourage action and check in. That conversation could change, or even save, their life. For more information on how you can help and support someone - https://www.ruok.org.au/join-r-u-ok-day Year 9 students visited each class today to pass on information about how to support someone who needs help. SF Year 5 celebrated their retirement on Friday. We played games, talked about our retirement and ate food. To be retired you have to be over the age of about 65. Retiring is fun, you get access to your superannuation account. A superannuation account is an account that, when you are working, 9.5% of all the money you earn goes into your superannuation account. AM We had a retirement party and the reason for that is because we have been using a program called Banqer, it teaches us about superannuation, taxes, everyday savings, transport, property and insurance. There are jobs that we do to earn money. We had our party on Friday 13th and we had so much fun. We learnt about everything that we could do in our life in the future. CN Banqer

The teachers are very encouraging and supportive. I would love the opportunity to lead the school and help my fellow students wi...th advice and encouragement. Matt 7v12 I believe that this verse helps me to become the best leader. I would treat my fellow students with respect, listening and helping, so that we can all have the greatest school life. * I chose the verse, Phil 4:13 I can do all things through him who gives me strength. I would like to be part of the Leadership team because I believe that Heritage is a very welcoming and friendly school. The teachers are very helpful and supportive. I would like to be a good role model to the people in classes below me. * I would try to be a good leader, because I am responsible, kind, friendly and humble. Matt 20v26 Whoever wants to be a leader, must be a servant. If you are a servant, you have to respect the king, that is the same as being a leader, always respect and care for others. * I would like to be part of the 2020 Leadership team, because I would try to do the things that a leader does, like make sure everyone is doing the right thing.
