24.01.2022 Happy New Year from Shipwreck Friday! The new year has started with the addition of three new historic shipwrecks: Ada, Lady Angus and Iris, all lost in 1946. This week #shipwreckfriday visits the remains of the fishing vessel Ada. Ada was originally the No. 1 lifeboat from HMCS Protector, South Australia’s first and only colonial warship, purchased by the SA government in 1884. In 1920, just four years before Protector was decommissioned, the No. 1 lifeboat was sold and conv...erted into a fishing cutter. It fished around American River for 20 years before transferring to Kingscote. Ada sank off Brownlow Beach, south of Kingscote, at the mouth of the Cygnet River in 1946. Today, only the low hull with keel, some frames and a section of the bow remain. (Please remember: the site is now protected under the Underwater Cultural Heritage Act 2018; it is an offence to damage, destroy, interfere with, or remove any part of the shipwreck or its associated artefacts.) #heritagesa #maritimesa #UnderwaterCulturalHeritage #shipwrecks #seeSouthAustralia #visitSouthAustralia #southaustralia See more

23.01.2022 Today’s #SAheritagegrantsprogram showcase project is SHP 13357 Holy Trinity Church Adelaide. A Church has existed on this site since 1838, it is therefore known as the oldest church in Adelaide. The Adelaide Holy Trinity Church was built in three stages 1838, 1845 and 1889. The staged development of the site demonstrates the establishment and expansion of the Anglican Church in SA and also reflects the settlement and consolidation of SA as a whole. The church received a gra...nt of $19,040 for masonry conservation of the west facade and transept. This top quality restoration work was undertaken by skilled stone masons using the correct mortar mixes and re-pointing techniques. This conservation project means we can all feel reassured that this historic Adelaide landmark will be standing for another 150 years. #heritagesa #holytrinity #adelaide

Following Government administration from 1916, Point McLeay was returned to the Ngarrindjeri people in 1974 and renamed Raukkan- ‘ancient meeting place’ in 1982. A number o...f structures remain at Raukkan including Taplin’s house, schoolmaster’s house, church, cottages, dairy, water tank stone walls and a jetty. 15.01.2022 This week’s #shipwreckfriday is the iron barque Iron Age, built at Stockton, Durham, in 1854. Registered in London, the vessel was owned by Bake and Co. On 15 February 1855, while on the barque’s first voyage from London bound for Portland, Victoria, Captain Brown took his noon position which indicated the vessel was 100 miles off shore. He later reported the position was verified by another ship he had contacted that day. The vessel held an easterly course according to the c...ompass, and saw lights either side of his course that were lights mistaken for passing ships before running aground on a reef near Cape Northumberland. The captain put the disaster down to the vessel’s iron construction causing a compass deviation. Today, the site comprises wooden hull material, with ceramic, bricks, glass and copper fastenings. The site measures approximately 20m long by 7-8 m wide. 12.01.2022 ‘A win for heritage and the community’. News from Keith Conlon, Chair of the South Australian Heritage Council: The former Sands & McDougall building façade on King William Street, Adelaide is an outstanding and early example of Art Deco architecture in South Australia.... The South Australian Heritage Council recognised this through provisional entry of the facade in the South Australian Heritage Register in August, following a nomination from the community. Despite the building already having protection as a Local Heritage Place, it was earmarked for demolition by the owner to make way for a large development of the precinct. Following the decision of the SA Heritage Council, the owner applied to the Minister for Environment and Water to consider removing the heritage entry in the public interest, a power the Minister has under the Heritage Places Act 1993. The SA Heritage Council was very pleased to learn that the Minister determined on 15 October that he would not intervene as he believes the Art Deco feature to be an important historical item and that the façade can be incorporated into the project to develop the precinct. This decision by the Minister is a win for heritage and the community. It demonstrates that built heritage fabric can be incorporated into new design to meet the development needs of the city. The façade is highly intact and demonstrates many of the key attributes of the style, including vertical form; concentration of ornamentation at the top of the building; and stylised decorations made from coloured-pressed Portland cement, copper panels, and metal grilles to the upper storey windows. The Art Deco remodelling of the façade in 1933 transformed the nineteenth century classical building, eschewing the past and expressing optimism for the future. The provisional entry of the former Sands & McDougall facade triggered a three month public consultation process and the SA Heritage Council welcomes anyone to make a submission regarding Confirmation of this Art Deco architectural feature in the SA Heritage Register. 11.01.2022 This week #shipwreckfriday visits the site the iron screw steamer Ellen, built by Smith Forrester & Co, in Brisbane, in 1883. Ellen had departed Glenelg on Monday 7 December 1908 bound for Kangaroo Island, chartered by a group of Scottish fishermen interested in establishing a fishing business in South Australia. On their return, Ellen encountered very rough conditions crossing Backstairs Passage on 12 December 1908. In the rough conditions, the wind suddenly swung from the... SW to the NW. As a result, the vessel drifted astern towards the shore until its stern ran aground on the rocky seabed at Morgans Beach, a little north of Cape Jervis. The bow was then swung around onto the rocks by the waves and Ellen became a total wreck. Today, the wreck covers an area of about 30 m by about 10 m. The most prominent features are a boiler and the vessel's keel. The former which sits on a piece of deck and is partially exposed above water level at most times, while the keel stands proud of the seaweed. Pieces of wreckage are also located on the rock platform that extends up to white sand at the high tidemark. (Please remember: the site is protected under the Historic Shipwrecks Act 1981; it is an offence to damage, destroy, interfere with, or remove any part of the shipwreck or its associated relics.) #heritagesa #maritimesa #UnderwaterCulturalHeritage #shipwrecks #seeSouthAustralia #visitSouthAustralia #southaustralia

04.01.2022 Sometimes registered shipwrecks are small and relatively obscure; they’re not always the big exciting clipper ships of the 19th century. This week #shipwreckfriday takes a look at an example of a small private boat: Erie, built at Mayurra by Hec Thompson and launched onto Lake Bonney, in SA’s Riverland, in 1940. The boat was built with local timbers including blackwood and dryland tea-tree for the frames, and American hardwood for the cladding. It was 8.1 metres long and powe...red by a Model T Ford engine. Erie was damaged in a storm in the 1950s and hauled to its current site, about 60 metres from the lake shore, with the intention of repairing it. However, nothing was done and the boat was left to its fate to slowly breakdown over time. #heritagesa #maritimesa #UnderwaterCulturalHeritage #shipwrecks #seeSouthAustralia #visitSouthAustralia #southaustralia South Australia Keith Conlon David Hanna

02.01.2022 The answer to this week's Heritage Who Am I is a monument - a memorial to those that lost their lives when the Star of Greece ship was wrecked in 1888. The monument was registered as a State Heritage Place in 1990. It is located at 2 Old Coach Road, Aldinga. Before being wrecked, the Star of Greece spent most of her time engaged in the Calcutta jute trade, but did occasionally journey to Mauritius for sugar. It had made journeys to New Zealand and New York and then came all ...the way to Australia. On the fateful day of the accident the wind was blowing a gale, the rain was thick and the barometer is said to have fallen to an unprecedented low. The south west wind was pounding the coast so strongly that it pushed the Star of Greece around 25 miles off course. At 2am the ship hit what was soon realized to be the shore. Shortly after the incident the ship broke in two amidship. 17 of the 28 people on board died. The ship was carrying thousands of bags of wheat to London when tragedy struck. Help did not arrive on site until 14 hours after the accident - after 4:30pm the next day. This slow response produced a collective outcry in the community and in the end led to some changes in regards to safety standards. The first photo is of the Rudder. The second, a close up of the memorial. The figurehead and other relics are held on display at the South Australian Maritime Museum. There is also interpretive signage near the Star of Greece cafe.
