23.01.2022 Today the Hero celebrates two significant things in her life......the first being her 146th Birthday and if that wasn't enough it is 20 years to the day and almost time (3pm) that her Hull was relaunched into the river at the Moama Slipway. All this, mainly because of one man's dream and vision of resurrecting a twisted burnt out sunken wreckage of a paddle steamer, his family, many friends and enthusiasts support along the way he (they) did it. The wreck was purchased in ...1986 by Gary, Irene and their family with the intention to raise her and salvage what little was left and bring her back to her former glory. The Steam engine and boiler were removed from the hull in 1991 for restoration however the rest of the salvage was put on hold for a couple of reasons one was waiting for the right height in the river and the other being the cost of salvage. But it was a case of now or never in 1997/98 and the decision was made to have her out and back at the Port of Echuca to begin restoration. The removal from the river took many hours, once all the mud and silt was removed, 20mm cables were fed underneath the hull for extra support. Huge tractors from one of the local potato farmers were borrowed to assist in moving the Hero from the mud, water was pumped out and an old fuel tanker was placed beside her to help her become afloat again. The Hero was able to float and tarps were placed underneath as a safety measure before her 5km trip up stream being towed by the Mosquito. The first attempt was made with 25t, 40t and 60t cranes these cranes combined did not have enough reach to safely lift the boat, so it was left for the day, until cranes from Mildura reached the site the next morning. The second attempt at lifting the Hero out, was aided with 40t, and two 60t cranes this combination proved successful although very hair raising. She was then transported back by road to Port of Echuca to begin her transformation. Gary set the goal of having her Hull back in the water by 16th September 2000, and that he did with the help along the way of many many knowledgeable and talented craftspeople. The relaunch was planned and a great occasion was enjoyed by many, it would then take some six years after this until her super structure was complete and her river trials could start again. Hip Hip Hooray, Happy Birthday Grand Old Lady....may you enjoy many more years afloat and helping create special memories for everyone. X
