02.01.2022 Great news for Hunter coast fishos with two new artificial reef towers deployed on the weekend! The steel reef structures were towed into place over the weekend... from Newcastle Harbour to their new home just over 3.5km from the entrance to Lake Macquarie. Carefully sunk remotely from a nearby tug, their final position lies on the sandy seafloor some 28m below the surface. The whole operation was undertaken over three days with the massive 90 tonne structures lifted into the water on Friday ready for their last voyage to their new home south of Newcastle. It's a great time of year to install new reefs with spring just around the corner. Think of these huge metal behemoths as the skeleton of a soon-to-be thriving fish community. The new reefs will be rapidly colonised by marine vegetation and a variety of other organisms which will in turn be followed by baitfish and then the larger predatory fish such as snapper, mulloway and kingfish which feed on them.
