03.01.2022 FRASER ISLAND SPECIAL SERIES PART I: Planning your trip Today is the first day of autumn, and to me that means one thing...beach fishing season is not far away ...in QLD. With Fraser Island amongst the meccas of beach fishing across Australia I thought I'd update my series of posts from 2017 on the fishing (for beginners to the advanced) as well as some basics for newbies who have never been to the island. Getting There You have three main options to get to Fraser: 1. Car ferry from Hervey Bay (River Heads) of about 45 minutes landing at Wangoolba Creek or Kingfisher Resort, on the western or calm side of the island. These run to a timetable. It is then about 1hr trip to the eastern beach 2. Car ferry from Inskip Point to Hook Point at the southern most point of Fraser (10 minute trip with no fixed timetable) 3. Flight from Hervey Bay and land on the beach near Happy Valley, but luggage is limited. NOTE: A 4WD is a must unless you are going on organised bus tours. Stay overnight before you go If you have time stay overnight at Rainbow beach or Hervey Bay before you go. This is a great way to have a few drinks/dinner with mates/family if you are coming from some distance and meeting. Then you can leave early morning and make the most of your time on the island. Some pre-trip overnight stays and food options include: * At Rainbow Beach you can visit the coloured sands, while at Hervey Bay you can do a while watching tour from August to October * Be sure to fill up on fuel before you hit the island as fuel is expensive on the island * Both Hervey Bay and Rainbow Beach also have 4WD hire and you can also hire one from Kingfisher Resort on the island * Hervey Bay has the major supermarkets if you want to leave your shopping to just before you go, while Rainbow Beach has a small IGA. * Otherwise there are restaurants for guests at Eurong and Kingfisher Resorts and Fraser Retreat (as well as some food supplies at their respective shops) as well as a bakery at Eurong. There are also some food supplies/hot takeaway food at Cathedral Beach Resort and Orchard Beach. Accommodation On the island, you have 3 main choices. * Camping, in which case you will need to purchase both a camping and 4WD permit before you leave. Be dingo aware - read up on the do's and dont's and stay very close to young children. * Rental houses - there are a heap of options on the eastern beach from Eurong to Orchard Beach * Resort style accommodation of varying styles for all tastes and budgets. On the ocean beach this includes Eurong Beach Resort, Fraser Island Retreat at Happy Valley, Fraser Island beachouses Yidney Rocks Beachfront Units (Fraser Island), Dilli Village for budget style or group accommodation, and Cathedral beach camping ground for full camping facilities and cabins. On the western side there is the beautiful Kingfisher Bay Resort and Fraser Villas. If dingos are a concern with young kids, stay at one of the resorts/camping grounds with fenced accommodation. If you do visit the island pop in to Fraser Retreat and ask to speak to Larry and tell him you follow this page. He will look after you and give you all the latest fishing reports and advice on the island you could ever need. From August to September be sure to also take your fish in to enter the draw for one of many great prizes in the Fraser Island Annual Tailor Season Weigh-in. All monies go to the great RACQ Lifeflight Service. And for a memory of your stay or as a gift, what better than a Mad Keen Fishing shirt with "Stress is caused by not fishing Fraser enough!" available from the shop at Eurong or Fraser Retreat (Happy Valley)! PLACES TO SEE For first timers I recommend at least 4 days, a week is better for sightseeing and more fishing. Places you shouldn't miss include: * Lake Mackenzie * Central station * Eli Creek * Maheno shipwreck and * the view from the top of Indian Head. If time also take in: * Lake Wabby * Champayne pools and * a visit to the western side e.g Woralie creek Grab a Hema MAP of Fraser before you go and check out all these places online before you go.
