24.01.2022 We expect to be having our second book launch of "Moments in Time Vol 2" at the Historical Village on Friday December 18th. Free entry. Your chance to get the book without a trip to Maryborough which is where the initial launch will be on November 26th at Station Square. Please note that our Carols in the Village will not take place this year due to Covid restrictions etc. We do expect to be having our usual Australia Day Celebrations on January 26th. It will only be a $2.00 ...entry . There will be lots of family fun and things to see and do. You will be able to help make a 10metre long rope which will be auctioned off during the day.. 24.01.2022 Just completed 6 of the self winding tops which will be on sale at the Historical Village next week. The main top is made from spotted gum timber joists from the Great Hall flooring. The hall was demolished last year after serving the Community and school for 40 years. Price will be $15.00 each. If you want to pre order, contact Margie on 0407 695 822. or 41284804 on Tuesday or Thursday They will come with a set of instructions on how to spin them. When they spin, the string rewinds itself ready for the next spin.

23.01.2022 If you are looking for unique Christmas presents, look no further than our hand crafted local souvenirs. We have Great Hall biros and fountain pens, Urangan Pier pens and numerous blacksmith crafted items, not to mention our 3 major books. The 4th book, "Moments in Time" Volume 2 will be launched on 26th November in Maryborough. The latest addition to our unique souvenirs are hand crafted Australian animals. Prices are very reasonable with the large Wombat at $25.00. The kang...aroo at $20 and the Koalas at $7. 15.01.2022 10 More HISTORICAL FACTSHERVEY BAY. 11. The beach at Scarness/Torquay was used as a landing strip for aeroplanes and also for motorbike races! 12. Many of our early roads were made from gravel barged over from Woody Island. 13. Submarine mesh from Sydney Harbour was used to build the Scarness Swimming enclosure in the early 1950’s.... 14. The first European settler, Boyle Martin, arrived in 1863. Monument erected by our Museum near Beach Rd, Pialba. 15. Timber from Fraser Island was used to build the Suez Canal and also the London Docks! 16. The Australian Navy often held exercises in the waters of Hervey Bay. 17. The COMMANDOS trained secretly on Fraser Island during World War 2. 18. Fraser Island is the largest SAND ISLAND in the World, formed over millennium from the sandstone from the Sydney. Blue Mountains area of NSW! 19. Hervey Bay has often topped the list for population % increase in Australia. 20. 15.01.2022 1. Beating Mr. Whippi by decades! Haddows Café at Scarness was famous for its home made ice cream, with horse and cart traversing the Bay selling 1penny (I cent) and 3 penny (3 cent) ice cream cones!

13.01.2022 Saltwater Creek Hotel How times change! Maryborough.the birthplace of the Fraser Coast’s Colonial beginnings. For our pioneers to imagine that in 2020, it would be possible to travel to Brisbane and return back to Maryborough on sealed highways within 6 hours would have been unimaginable. For them, a trip to the developing Pialba area was a day’s journey over rough bush tracks. First stop would have been the Saltwater Creek Hotel, situated on the town side of Saltwater Cree...k. At least another two unofficial hotels were encountered before arriving at Pialba. The historic photograph of the Hotel gives a glimpse of life as it was, with a motor car gradually replacing the horses of earlier times. Like so many of Maryborough’s old hotels, the Saltwater Creek Hotel is but a memory but thanks to the magic of the camera, its history lives on. See more

This is due to the Covid restrictions and the lack of available volunteers. This is the first time in history that we have not opened during School Holidays. 11.01.2022 Reasons for Rationing. War conditions necessitated civilian rationing of clothing and certain foodstuffs in Australia. The main reasons for clothing rationing were the serious falling off in imports, increased Service demands, and reduced labour for local production of textiles and making up of garments. The supply to the United Kingdom and the Australian and Allied Services of maximum quantities of foodstuffs necessitated the rationing of sugar. butter and meat, while reduction in imports, consequent upon enemy occupation of Java, necessitated the rationing of tea. In addition to the controls exercised by the Rationing Commission, rationing of certain other commodities is directed by other departments, e.g., petrol, tobacco, liquor, etc.

10.01.2022 Post Office Story What stories this building could tell! The original Post Office, Pialba, corner of Main and Hillyard Streets was always a very busy place. As well as a general Post Office where you bought your stamps, posted letters sent telegrams, paid accounts for many Agencies and registered for pensions and unemployment benefits, it was the very hearthbeat of communications for the entire Bay. Within the relatively small building was housed the telephone exchange, mann...ed by a dedicated group of call girlstelephonists, who received all incoming and outgoing telephone calls on the manual exchange. Very few people had telephones connected to their homes up until the 1960’s. (Mobiles phone were for the long distant future!). The night shift was always manned by a male person. I personally had two sisters and a cousin who worked on the Pialba Exchange. My cousin, on nightshift from 10pm until 6am, would often not have ONE telephone for the whole of Hervey Bay during that period! Every telephone call that was made was answered by the telephonist and manually connected from your phone to your caller’s phone. She would then listen in occasionally to see when the call was ended so that the connection could be stopped. The call was then registered into the callers Account! Local calls were just thatlocal Hervey Bay only. If you called Maryborough or beyond, that was a trunk call and was timed into 3 minute segments! This really limited the time people spent talking on trunk calls! Almost unheard of today, telegrams were in some ways similar to today’s SMS’s. To send a telegram, you went to the Post Office, filled in the appropriate form with a short message and paid according to the number of words. The Post Master would then make a telephone call to the area where the telegram was to be delivered and dictate the message. The message was then usually hand written on a TELEGRAM form and delivered personally to the addressee by the telegram boy..usually by push bike! How times have changed! 10.01.2022 An addition to our wood turned souvenirs will be these bud vases. They are red cedar and huon pine laminated. They have a plastic test tube inserted so that the water cannot get to the timber. They will be $5.00 each. You may pre order them at our Office on 4128 4804 . Leave a message if we are not there.

02.01.2022 10 HISTORICAL FACTSHERVEY BAY. 1. Railway Line from Maryborough to Pialba arrived in 1896. 2. For many years through the 1960/70, Hervey Bay was promoted as then CARAVAN CAPITAL of AUSTRALIA with aprox 23 Caravan Parks! 3. The Urangan Pier was the largest exporter of coal on the east coast of Australia in 1929! 4. For many years, Hervey Bay had only 3 SchoolsPialba, Torquay and Urangan Point.... 5. In the early 1900’s, Pialba had its own Council.. the Pialba Shire Council. 6. The Hervey Bay Historical Museum was established in 1974 as a completely volunteer run Museum, 7. Sugar cane was a major primary industry for many years. 8. Other Primary Industries included dairying, pineapples, passionfruit and small crops. 9. At one stage the Hervey Bay to Maryborough Railway line was the most profitable in Queensland. 10. Hervey Bay was the first REGIONAL area in Australia to be serviced by 240 volt AC electricity!
