25.01.2022 Another way that we are committed to ZERO HOMELESSNESS is the introduction of the Tenancy Skills courses. These courses equip tenants to apply for rental properties with confidence that their applications will stand out from the rest. Narelle has been facilitating these courses since we first partnered with the Tenancy Skills Institute last year. I enjoy delivering this course and seeing the participants learning about resources and information that will help them become bet...ter tenants has really been a highlight for me, said Narelle. This course is a valuable resource for participants to gain awareness of their rights and responsibilities as tenants and is the difference between getting their applications approved or not. Tenants can now complete the course in a self-paced web learning environment. Read more: https://www.hbnc.com.au/skillsets-for-tenancies #Neighbourhoodfocus

18.01.2022 The third key focus area under our Strategic Plan is ZERO HOMELESSNESS. We are committed to ending homelessness in our community because: Relationship and family breakdowns are the leading triggers for the first instance of homelessness. 24% of young people on the Fraser Coast do not live with their parents and 14% do not feel safe at home. (Source: HBNC Youth Survey) There are more than 70,000 people on the public housing waiting list, putting more pressure on our alre...ady high rental vulnerability issues. #neighbourhoodfocus See more

05.01.2022 For over 17 years, Ros Connor has been a passionate advocate for ZERO HOMELESSNESS for Fraser Coast residents. Ros currently works in the Tenancy Advice Service at the Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre, providing assistance to tenants on rights, responsibilities, support to resolve issues, forms and preparation for QCAT hearings. I strongly believe no one has the right to discriminate or judge and everybody is entitled access to safe and affordable housing, Ros said.... A real highlight for me was seeing the tenancy advice service reintroduced in Qld in 2015, after the previous government had withdrawn funding. I really would like to see more rights for tenants and affordable housing options in our region. For free, independent advice and referral support for all Queenslander renters please phone 1300 744 263 or visit https://www.hbnc.com.au/qstars #neighbourhoodfocus

03.01.2022 Adam Hughes from Fraser Coast Regional Council and the Youth Alliance provided valuable insights on the topic of OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUTH at this week’s Social Plan update. The Youth Alliance is a collective of local youth services including the council, Queensland Police Service, PCYC Hervey Bay, Red Cross and Reconnect Youth Centre. Based on the 2016 census, 18.8% of our 15-24 year old residents are classed as disengaged, Adam said. Disengaged means not attending school,... not getting any education or not doing any work. That’s a pretty astonishing statistic considered the rest of Queensland is only at 11%. How do we get them interested in planning their future, being part of our community and making a life for themselves on the Fraser Coast? Hear Adam’s insights in the video and find out more about the Fraser Coast Social Plan at frasercoastsocialplan.com.au. #neighbourhoodfocus See more
