24.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY #6: The Hervey Bay Australian Football Club first fielded junior grade teams in 1979, with the Hervey Bay Seahawks winning in the Under 13s in their debut season. The Seahawks Under 15s won their first flag, two years later, which was another great achievement, as all of our grades had to play Sunshine Coast and Gympie teams for the first three seasons of existence. The Seahawks/Bombers Under 14/15 age bracket featured in 15 out of 16 Grand Finals between 1...981 and 2000, with 4 seasons where this age bracket did not play a season. Amazingly our Hervey Bay Footy Club won ALL 15 Grand Finals when they featured. The Bombers even had to find new opposition in 2000, as the local sides had literally given up to that point. Here is a Summary: 1981: U15 - Seahawks 5.5 (35) d. Nambour 2.12 (24). 1982-1983 - No Under 14s or Under 15s. 1984: U15 - Seahawks 8.13 (61) d. Gympie 6.12 (48). 1985: U14 - Bombers 9.11 (65) d. Gympie 7.5 (47). 1986: U14 - Bombers 5.6 (36) d. Gympie 2.2 (14). 1987: No Under 14s or Under 15s. 1988: U15 - Bombers 14.8 (92) d. Gympie 7.7 (49). 1989: U15 - Bombers 6.11 (47) d. Norths 5.3 (33). 1990: No Under 14s or Under 15s. 1991: U15 - Bombers 10.14 (74) d. Souths 3.1 (19). 1992: U15 - Norths beat Wests (Bombers 3rd). 1993: U15 - Bombers 16.11 (107) d. Norths 2.2 (14). 1994: U15 - Bombers 16.10 (106) d. Souths 2.1 (13). 1995: U15 - Bombers 9.25 (79) d. Norths 10.7 (67). 1996: U14 - Bombers 9.14 (68) d. Bulldogs 2.6 (18). 1997: U14 - Bombers 15.19 (109) d. Bulldogs 2.0 (12). 1998: U14 - Bombers 8.5 (53) d. F/Coast 1.6 (12). 1999: U15 - Bombers 8.11 (59) d. F/Coast 1.3 (9). 2000: U14 - Bombers 11.7 (73) d. Noosa Blue 6.9 (45). Since then, the Bombers have played a further 15 Grand Finals in the Under 14s and Under 15s, winning 9 Flags, including back to back over Bay Power in 2019 and 2020. Great work by our young lads !! Go Bombers. Anthony Paterson (Patto).

17.01.2022 Good afternoon Players & Members, As last nights general committee meeting was postponed I would like to update what came out of last weeks Wide Bay meeting, as to get all on the same page. I was hoping the league minutes would have arrived at this time but alas they have not. So a quick break down, the only major item was the Womens competition - was voted by the presidents to commence in February and continue into the mens season where the Womens games will be played afte...r the mens as a twilight fixture This as a positive for our club as bigger crowds will mean bigger revenue for bar and canteen. The Womens season will continue right through with no break. Also the Womens competition will consist of the same teams as last years competition. So far to date no coaches have been selected as we are still waiting for final applications. I am currently in discussions for a senior coach from Victoria who has excellent credentials and would be an asset to our club. Also there are four new players 2 from Victoria one from Cairns and one from Port Douglas who want to play with the Bombers. They are a ruckman, tall forward and 2 midfielders. Fingers crossed! Good news is from discussions with various people we look as if we will have a much bigger committee to accommodate our club as it grows, as there has been fantastic interest in members wanting to come on board and be pro active, bring on the AGM and let our club be as strong as it can be! Regards, Phillip Short President HBBAFCC

16.01.2022 Bombers under the stars and smooth tunes of ShaunBeckett- can't ask for much better!

13.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY #7: The Hervey Bay Australian Football Club have played against 21 different A Grade Senior Clubs, and several other clubs at junior and youth level also. In 1977, the Hervey Bay Seahawks played against 4 teams from the Bundaberg and District region. Western Suburbs Bulldogs (now Brothers Bulldogs) were our first opponents, followed by Southern Suburbs Magpies (South Bundaberg), Burnett Heads Saints and North Bundaberg Kangaroos.... From 1978 until 1981, the Seahawks played 7 different Sunshine Coast clubs. They were Gympie Cats, Pomona-Cooroy Demons, Maryborough United (now Bears), Nambour Blues, Maroochydore Roos, Caloundra Panthers, and Noosa Tigers. In 1982, the Seahawks returned to the Bundy competition. A year later, in 1983, we played new clubs Bargara (short term club), and Biggenden Falcons, both in one off matches only at A Grade level. In 1984, Cooloola Coast Dolphins joined the main competition, becoming our 14th A Grade Senior opponent, in just 8 Seasons. In 1985, Hervey Bay Hawks (our Reserves) joined the A Grade Competition, along with Gympie Bulldogs, although temporarily, to make it 16 opponents. It wasn't until 1992 before our Hervey Bay Bombers club played another new club, and it was another Hervey Bay team called Fraser Coast Lions, who became the Magpies in 1997, the same year when we first played Across the Waves Eagles, our 18th opponent. In 2003, the Bombers played Bribie Island Bulldogs and Glasshouse Lions for the first time, which became opponents #19 and #20. Bay Power took the place of Fraser Coast Magpies in 2004, therefore becoming our 21st A Grade Senior opponents. In Reserve Grade, Youth and Junior Footy, our Hervey Bay Seahawks/Bombers have played against several of the clubs already mentioned, as well as teams from Tiaro, Bauple, Howard, Childers, Central Burnett, North Shore, and Hinterlanders (Sunny Coast). At Junior level, Maroochydore, Noosa, Fraser Coast, Bay Power and Gympie have at times played multiple junior sides in the same season. Hervey Bay Bombers Red, and Hervey Bay Bombers Black have also had other names and featured as Hervey Bay Junior Seahawks, and even as Pialba, Torquay and Urangan, and one season as Hervey Bay Tigers (1984). What great history our proud club has seen over the years. Go Bombers !!! Anthony Paterson (Patto).

08.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY #9: 20 YEARS AGO - SEASON 2000. After a very successful 15 season spell between 1982 and 1996, the Hervey Bay Bombers Seniors faced up to the new merged side, Across the Waves Bundaberg Eagles, who won three straight flags in 1997, 1998 and 1999, in their first three seasons.... The Bombers were Minor Premiers in all three seasons, but won only 1 final out of 6, during that time, with 5 matches being decided by a couple of goals or less. Season 2000 was to be the turning point, with the Bombers being awarded a 6th straight Minor Premiers Award, and more determined than ever to break the run of the new powerhouse side, ATW. There were 5 teams competing, and in an unprecedented situation, two A Grade Senior sides, Maryborough Bears and Fraser Coast Magpies, were to fold during the season. AFL Bundaberg Wide Bay 2000 - Rounds 1 to 5: R1: Eagles 13.7 (85) d. Bombers 10.7 (67). R2: Bombers 18.19 (127) d. Bears 1.1 (7). R3: Bombers 20.19 (139) d. Bulldogs 3.3 (21). R4: Bombers 28.9 (177) d. Magpies 7.2 (44). R5: Bombers - BYE. After Round 5, the Bears pulled out of the A Grade Seniors but continued in the place of the absent Fraser Coast Magpies Reserves slot, thus forming a Division 2 Seniors competition. Division 1 Seniors 2000 - Rounds 6 to 15: R6: Bombers 13.10 (88) d. Eagles 6.8 (44). R7: Bombers 23.16 (154) d. Magpies 3.5 (23). R8: Bulldogs 13.11 (89) d. Bombers 9.10 (64). R9: Bombers 8.12 (60) d. Eagles 7.9 (51). R10: Bombers 24.15 (159) d. Magpies 3.7 (25). R11: Bombers 12.10 (82) d. Brothers 6.8 (44). R12: Bombers 11.15 (81) d. Eagles 7.4 (46). R13: Bombers 26.24 (180) d. Magpies 2.3 (15). R14: Bombers 21.13 (139) d. Bulldogs 4.9 (33). R15: Bombers 17.8 (110) d. Eagles 5.9 (39). The Round 13 match on 15th July 2000, was to be the final Senior match ever between Hervey Bay Bombers and Fraser Coast Magpies. The Magpies forfeited 3 of their final 6 matches, which included the First Semi Final, and after their juniors played on Grand Final Day, never took to the field again as Fraser Coast Magpies. 2000 DIV 1 SENIOR FINALS - Bombers redemption ..... 1SF: Bulldogs defeated Magpies on forfeit. 2SF: Bombers 9.7 (61) d. Eagles 6.12 (48). PF: Eagles 16.4 (100) d. Bulldogs 3.2 (20). GF: BOMBERS 10.7 (67) d. Eagles 4.12 (36). The Bombers had redemption over the Eagles after going down to them in the 1999 Grand Final, and losing narrowly to them in both the 1997 and 1998 Finals Series. For the following 7 seasons, Hervey Bay Bombers were Minor Premiers EVERY season, winning 5 out of 7 Grand Finals, amazingly ALL of them against ATW Eagles. Looking forward to seeing history repeat in the coming years once again !!!! Go Bombers. Anthony Paterson (Patto).
