20.01.2022 BLOOD SAMPLING: USING IV CANNULAS Using an IV cannula for blood sampling can be a great solution in hospitalised patients, reducing stress significantly. There are a couple of things to watch out for in your samples, however:... 1. The likelihood of getting haemolysis increases 2. Once a cannula has been flushed with saline, blood glucose and electrolyte measurements may be inaccurate. To avoid sampling errors, a pre-sample ("waste") should be drawn of approximately 3 - 6 times the cannula's priming volume. If you have to take serial samples in a small or already anaemic patient, minimize the sample volume as much as possible to prevent causing or exacerbating anaemia. In these cases, using an ear or paw prick may be more useful for serial measurements. #veterinarymedicine #veterinarian #veterinarynurse #venipuncture #bloodsample #bloodsampling #phlebotomy #haematology #biochemistry #heska #heskaau See more

15.01.2022 BLOOD SAMPLING: EQUIPMENT Before you take a sample, go through these steps first: Decide what tests you want to run... Choose the blood tubes based on the tests required Figure out the volume of blood needed Decide what size needle and syringe you need. You will need to use smaller gauge needles for small, peripheral veins but remember to try and use the largest size possible to reduce the likelihood of haemolysis. When using large syringes, take care not to apply too much pressure on the plunger, leading to collapse of the blood vessel. Some vets and nurses like using butterfly catheters to collect samples because the extension set allows for easy swapping of smaller syringes, making the experience more comfortable for the patient, as well as reducing the likelihood of vein collapse. #veterinarymedicine #veterinarian #veterinarynurse #venipuncture #bloodsample #bloodsampling #phlebotomy #haematology #biochemistry #heska #heskaau See more

10.01.2022 SAMPLING TIP Avoid injecting your blood samples through a needle into vacuum-extraction blood tubes. This second pass through the needle under pressure increases the likelihood of haemolysis of the sample, potentially affecting the lab results. #haematology #clinicalchemistry #haemolysis #bloodsampling #phlebotomy #clinicalpathology #veterinarymedicine #veterinarian #vetnurse #vettech #heska

01.01.2022 IDENTIFYING WHITE BLOOD CELLS It can be tricky identifying white blood cells on a blood smear. To tell them apart, check the following... 1. The size of the cell compared to a red blood cell 2. The shape and location of the nucleus 3. The amount of cytoplasm 4. The colour of the cytoplasm 5. The presence and colour of granules in the cytoplasm Check our the 5 types of white blood cell... #whitebloodcell #leukocyte #lymphocyte #neutrophil #monocyte #basophil #eosinophil #bloodsmear #differential #whitecelldifferential #heska #heskaau #haematology #veterinarymedicine #cytology #vetnurse #vettechstudent See more
