25.01.2022 EDIT: all sold, thanks everyone We have a few spare Gold Laced Wyandotte young pullets. Photos show breeding stock, pullets are 8-10 weeks old, guaranteed female. Pick up Midland on Sunday morning. :)

25.01.2022 Its show season! Don't be afraid, have a go. A good option for beginners is your local agricultural show, which often has a kids section too. Have a quick google to learn the basics, such as making sure your chooks are free of bugs, conform to the standard, and how to prepare them for showing. Then scrounge around for the average entry fee of $2 and get your entry forms in on time. :) Any questions, give us a call or message us.

24.01.2022 Hi everyone, my name is Kobie and I have started making chicken saddles which protect your chicken's backs from roosters when they mate the hens. I will be selling them for $10 each, plus $2 postage. I make them in different sizes, depending on the size of the chook. All are double sided with different fun fabrics on each side to keep your chooks looking stylish. Would anyone be interested?

21.01.2022 We have fertile eggs available for express posting tomorrow, a dozen mixed coloured wyandotte eggs for $45 plus $25 for postage and packaging. Same postage cost for two dozen. Can also supply a straight dozen of any colour (if you get in quickly). Please message for more details. Kobie also has a few chicken saddles available if you have a hen with feather damage from a rooster, or you just want your chook to look stylish! $12 each posted anywhere in Australia.

20.01.2022 Hi Everyone, Again, thanks for liking and following our Facebook page. Over the past few days we have been inundated with requests for pullets. Unfortunately we have completely sold out at the moment, and our waiting list is now so long I think it best to stop taking any more orders. When we have met all current orders and have spare pullets available, we will put up a post letting you know. We won't be selling fertile eggs for a while, but we are always happy to sell day o...ld chicks so you are still very welcome to place orders for those. Thanks for your patience, Lisa and girls. Oh, if you have pullets for sale, please feel free to place a comment below asking people to message you directly. :) See more

The following colours will be available in fertile eggs: Silver Laced Wyandottes, Gold Laced Wyandottes, Blue Laced Red Wyandottes and Splash Laced Red Wyandottes.... Day old chicks will also be also be available in these colours. For those waiting on pullets, we are still working our way through our list. Please message for further details.

20.01.2022 We will be holding a market stall at the Bindoon Primary School Mango Festival, next Saturday 16th March. Come along for a fun day of kids activities and a feast of cheap mangoes, and pick up some beautiful pullets too! We will have a good range available; plenty of pullets ready to go straight into your chook yard, and we have timed a hatch for the day before so we will have adorable day old chicks too. Will copy a link with more info when I figure out how to :)

18.01.2022 With a cool change coming tomorrow and for a few days after, we can post fertile eggs this week. We have a few dozen available, will be a random mixture of our different colours of wyandotte. $45 per dozen, plus $25 for express postage for either 1 or 2 dozen. Please message for details. And just in case you were wondering, no, we won't be sending any of today's eggs.......think they may have been laid hard boiled!

17.01.2022 The next post in our series of answers to FAQ's: My chooks look terrible and have stopped laying, what's going on? Don't panic, its all perfectly normal for autumn. Most chickens evolved, or were bred, in the northern hemisphere areas with very cold winters. In order to survive the cold, instead of putting their energy in producing eggs, they put their energy into moulting (old feathers fall out and new feathers grow) and gaining a layer of body fat. So at this time of year..., please be patient with your chooks, in a few weeks they will look beautiful again, but expect to get fewer eggs over winter as they will need to expend energy keeping warm. Please bear in mind that feathers are your chickens most treasured possession. They only get one coat per year, so please check your chooks now for external parasites such as lice, mites, tick, fleas etc. You don't want their new feathers being damaged, and it will be harder for your chickens to gain weight if they are under attack from parasites. Bugs can be hard to spot, so it won't hurt to treat them even if you don't see any. While you are treating for external parasites, you may as well give them a drench for internal parasites at the same time. Again, they are not going to gain weight with a belly full of worms. There are heaps of products available a pet supply shops so I won't recommend any particular brands, but if you do find bugs on your chooks, you will also need to spray the coop and probably reapply in a week or two. Thanks for reading all the way to the end! :) Lisa, Jenna and Kobie. See more

16.01.2022 Our next market day is Saturday 11th May, the Mother's Day Mini Market, at Yerecoin. Come along for some lovely country shopping and pick up some pretty pullets at the same time. Our stock is limited at the moment, so if there is anything in particular you are looking for, please pre-order. We have timed a hatch for the day before, so should have plenty of day old chicks, but as always, please pre-order. In addition to our stall, you will be impressed with the fashion from Blubella and the flowers by Rustic Rural Life, plus heaps more! And the coffee and food at Yerecoin Traders is worth the trip any day.

16.01.2022 What's available at Hewlett's Happy Hens this weekend? We have some lovely young wyandotte pullets in the following colours: Blue laced red/gold Splash laced gold... Gold laced Blue laced silver. All are $35 each, guaranteed female, aged between 8 and 16 weeks. With great sadness we have decided to move on some older hens who have been superseded by new and improved young hens. The older girls are between 2 and 3 years old, and need to go to good homes. They are free and preference will be given to existing customers. Pick up is tomorrow at Bindoon at ,4 pm, no holds. There are 3 French wheaten marans, 3 blue laced golds and one gold laced wyandotte. Finally we have 2 strapping young Coronation Sussex roosters, just reaching maturity, free to good homes. They are not cuddly, but have never been aggressive either. Would be ideal for a country flock of hens for protection. $10 each. We will be in Bindoon at 4pm tomorrow (Saturday) or New Norcia on Sunday afternoon. Please message to arrange.

13.01.2022 Hooray! Today is the winter solstice. With daylight hours increasing, your chooks should start increasing their laying. Ours got their dates wrong and improved their production this week. No complaints here, well done girls.

13.01.2022 We have decided to do a few posts to answer frequently asked questions. The first question which seems to be a daily occurrence on Facebook poultry pages is: "Is my chicken a boy or girl?" So the answer depends on the age and breed of your chicken. With our Wyandotte's and Sussex we cannot tell the sex at day old. There are many different ideas for sexing day olds on the internet, but unless you have an autosexing or sex linked variety, in my opinion its not accurate. As they... grow, the process gets easier. For a three week old chick, you will generally find the boys will have larger, redder combs and wattles, longer sturdier legs, and fewer feathers than their sisters. But its all comparative, you need to compare males and females from the same breed and same batch. This will give you an idea, but I wouldn't recommend chopping any heads off at this stage...... As your chickens continue to grow, the male features described above will become more pronounced. By the time they reach about 2 months of age, you should also be able to identify saddle feathers. Saddle feathers are your absolute guarantee you have a boy, pullets (girls) do not get them. Saddle feathers are long thin pointy feathers, frequently with darker richer colours, growing from the upper back of your male chicken. To find them, catch the chicken in doubt, open up the feathers on its back and look for anything that is pointy in shape, deeper in colour (except in Sussex) and just generally looks different to the rest of the chickens feathers. The moment you find a saddle feather, you can be sure you have a boy. If you look at the photos below, you will see some examples of them, and how distinctive they are. They exception is in the Sussex as all feathers are pure white, and they have masses of feathers. It can be hard to spot them but look for pointy ends and different textures. See more

12.01.2022 Looking forward to feasting on mangoes next week!

12.01.2022 Edit: thanks for the heads up, when I checked the weather earlier the forecast said 30 degrees, its now up to 36, so may have to cancel again! If you message me to register your interest, we can work something out. With the cancellation of a market day last Saturday we have plenty of pullets available. We will be in Perth on Saturday, and can meet in the Midland area at 11am, please message for details. We also have plenty of fertile eggs. All pullets are $35 each, guaranteed female.

11.01.2022 Adorable little fluff balls. Just hatched. We will be in Perth on Sunday if you would like some. Coronation Sussex, Gold Laced Wyandottes, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Splash Laced Gold Wyandottes, maybe a few others. Please message for more info. :) Still love hatch day.

11.01.2022 So you've bought Christmas presents for every one, is it time to buy yourself a present now? Hewlett's Happy Hens will be in Joondalup on Thursday morning, or can meet locally by arrangement. Please message for details, these are the last of our pullets, the incubator is off for a while so there will not be any more after this lot have gone.

11.01.2022 Have we missed anyone on the waiting list for day old chicks? And just a reminder, we are not selling fertile eggs, so if you live within a reasonable distance, day old chicks will be your only option this year. Will be in Perth on Saturday. For those still waiting for pullets, we thank you for your patience, hang in there.... they are coming :)

11.01.2022 We will be heading down to Harvey this Friday evening for the Wyandotte Show on Saturday. If any of our south west friends would like some pullets, fertile eggs or day old chicks, and are happy to meet us in Harvey on Friday night, send a message and we can organise something. :) Apologies for the hastily snapped pics...... We have some lovely pullets available at the moment, but my photo doesn't do them justice.

10.01.2022 Good morning everyone, Today's post has nothing to do with chooks. Yesterday morning I was in the supermarket buying groceries for my in-laws, and was surprised to see so many elderly and by all appearances, high risk people in the shop. The complete lack of social distancing in the supermarket was equally disturbing. I bumped into my GP a few minutes later and he was happy to help coordinate a buddy system where younger, healthy low risk people can call the surgery and give... their name, number and suburb/district, then the surgery can offer low risk peoples' contact details to high risk people who don't have family or friends to shop for them (and have a chat). Obviously many of you will have already offered to help someone you know, but if you don't know anyone, and would like to help, please call your local GP and ask if they would like to hand out your contact details to someone who may need help, or a friendly face to chat through the flyscreen with. Lets not forget that many elderly people don't have social media and are probably more stressed about this pandemic than we are. Thanks everyone, hang in there, Lisa and girls. See more

10.01.2022 Thanks again for the patience of all who are still waiting for pullets. We are working through the list, but have a long way to go. The fertility rate of eggs is still not high enough for us to commence selling fertile eggs. Further, Covid-19 has slowed Australia Post package delivery, so at this stage it doesn't look like we will be able to post interstate. I know this will disappoint many of our customers outside of WA, hopefully next season will be back to normal. Photos of our Gold Laced Wyandotte team, really happy with our latest generation of pullets. Hope you have had a lovely weekend. Lisa

10.01.2022 OK girls, the winter solstice has passed, day length is officially increasing, you have a good layer of fat and beautiful new feathers, there are simply no more excuses for this dismal egg count. The holiday is over, let's get back to work. :) :)

09.01.2022 Dear followers and friends of Hewlett's Happy Hens, Firstly, thank you so much for liking and following our page, and a special thank you to every one who has purchased pullets, chicks and eggs from us. We really appreciate your business and support. Many of you would know that Facebook no longer allows the selling of animals or animal products, and many poultry related groups have been shut down. Unfortunately many individual and business pages are also being shut down, so I... am posting this message in advance, just in case we are shut down too. I'm not sure what we will do when this happens, so I would like to suggest if you are contemplating purchasing from us, please make a note of my phone number, 0428 356 000 now, we could be hard to find in the future! Again, thanks everyone, and hopefully this is not goodbye. We will have to be a little more subtle with sales in the future, and perhaps alter the direction of the page. You are very welcome to add me onto your messenger contacts list or send me a personal friend request, in anticipation of this page being shut down. Happy to hear any suggestions. Love to all, Lisa and girls. See more

09.01.2022 How are your blue laced red wyandotte pullets from last year looking? We are getting a few photos from customers, and are quite impressed with the depth of colour. Would love to see a photo of yours :)

08.01.2022 Hi all, We are slowly working our way through our order list, and thank everyone who is waiting for their patience. It will be quite some time before we get to the end of the list. It's my turn to ask you for something now please! I need a new splash laced gold wyandotte rooster, or cockerel, standard sized. Obviously the best quality possible please, as he would be for the breeding programme. Happy to pay, and will be in Perth on Monday afternoon if that works for anyone. Thanks in advance if you can help. Photos below show the colour I am taking about. :)

08.01.2022 Hope you are holding up well. We are still getting so many enquiries every day for eggs, chicks and pullets. Please don't be offended by our refusal to sell anything, for starters we genuinely don't have anything available: egg laying slows at this time of year so we hatch everything ourselves, we have so many orders for pullets we will raise all that hatch, and it will still be many months before pullets are ready. This combined with our stay at home policy and travel restrictions means sales are just not going to happen. So on a more cheerful note, did you buy any gold laced Wyandotte's from us in the last year? If so, we would love to see a photo of them please, just post a pic in comments. We got some lovely new genetics last year (thanks Jon Kelly) and are really happy with them.

07.01.2022 Anyone? Not aggressive, just surplus to needs.

07.01.2022 Chicken run on Wednesday :) If you have a clucky hen and would like to indulge her, we have plenty of fertile eggs and day old chicks to make her happy. Fertile eggs are $60 per dozen, day olds are $10 each unsexed. We will be in the Midland area at about 11am Wednesday, please message us to arrange collection. We also have wyandotte pullets available; splash laced red, blue laced red/gold, a couple of gold laced and a blue laced silver or two. All are $35 each, guaranteed female.

06.01.2022 This is an American page, but most of the info is still relevant. If your eyesight is like mine has become recently, the glasses are a handy tool. The best time to look for bugs is after dark, use a head torch so you can hold your chooks and part the feathers with both hands. If you do find bugs, have a good google to identify them and learn about their life cycle. This is important as many bugs have a portion of their life cycle off the chickens, so you might kill all the bugs on the chooks, but 2 weeks later, more could emerge from metamorphosing underground.

05.01.2022 What a stressful week everyone has had! To all of our facebook friends facing the demise of your businesses you have poured your hearts and souls into, my heart goes out to you. To all who are stressed by the prospect of unemployment and financial insecurity, we are thinking of you. To those who are looking for laying hens, we are still many months from being able to supply anything to you. My only suggestion this week to to try to find some ex commercial layers. They are us...ually very cheap, will lay well for quite some time, and you get a lovely warm feeling knowing you have rescued and provided a beautiful home to an otherwise destitute animal. If you know where people can find ex battery hens, please comment below. And again, if you have any pullets for sale, please comment asking people to contact you directly. We do have a batch hatching today, and will be in Perth tomorrow, if you need some fluff ball cuteness in your life. L xx See more

04.01.2022 Update, thanks everyone, think we have promised them all. Pending collection :) We have just had a cancellation of a large order of splash laced gold pullets, most are around 16 weeks old, larger than our usual rehoming age. We also have some splash laced red pullets available, similar age. All are $35 each, guaranteed female, and with our usual happiness guarantee. Pick up is New Norcia.....sorry not coming to Perth this weekend. And unfortunately we don't have any othe...r colours available at the moment to make up a pretty mix. Photos of breeding hens. Can take photos of pullets tomorrow. :) Thanks. See more

04.01.2022 Zoe is a 3 year old Isa Brown chicken that came to see us because she was losing weight despite eating large amounts and passing unshelled eggs. We performed an... ultrasound and took a xray expecting to see reproductive disease which often occurs in chickens. Instead we found 3 screws in her abdomen when we took the xray! As these screws break down in a chicken's gut, they can develop heavy metal poisoning (iron, lead and zinc) as the metals in the screws slowly gets absorbed by the body causing the break down of red blood cells. They also cause ulceration of the stomach and can eventually lead to a perforation. We first used a flexible endoscope to try to retrieve the screws from her stomach as it was a less invasive method allowing for faster recoveries and less postoperative complications. However her stomach was full of grass and rocks making finding the screws a near impossible task. An exploratory laparotomy surgery was then performed to finally retrieve the screws. She recovered really well from the surgery and was eating her favourite mealworms and peas and corn not long after. Chickens are notorious for picking at shiny objects. If you have your chickens out wandering the yard, try to keep it free of loose items such as screws and nails.

04.01.2022 Some call them cross-breds, we prefer "love child". If you have ever wondered what crossing a Gold Laced Wyandotte hen with a Silver Laced Wyandotte rooster looks like, please see photos below. We have four love children looking to be loved (not judged by their appearance).

04.01.2022 Unfortunately we have had to cancel Hewlett's Happy Hens' booking at this weekends Yerecoin Markets. To compensate, I will be doing local deliveries this week. Tuesday is Moora and Dandaragan. Wednesday is Bindoon and Gingin. Thursday is Calingiri, Wongan, Piawaning and Yerecoin. Can meet in New Norcia almost any day.... Will be in Perth on Saturday. We have a good range of our beautiful backyard pullets (young hens) available. Please message me or phone 0428 356 000 for pickup times and locations. You can either place a specific order, or just turn up and choose some on the day. Thanks :) See more

03.01.2022 I know I rant about this every summer, but I just want to remind everyone that clean water, shade and some cool damp soil to dust bath in are essentials for this hot weather. Please give your chooks 5 minutes of your time tomorrow morning to ensure they survive the day. If you don't have 5 mins tomorrow, take a torch out there tonight, scrub out the water container and refill, soak a patch of soil in the shade and just have a little think about what you can do to help your feathered friends. Thanks, :) I know, completely unrelated video, but the little bubs did enjoy their watermelon this arvo.

02.01.2022 Anyone looking for a Coronation Sussex young rooster? He is apparently a lovely guy, and very good looking.......(I mistook him for a young pullet a few months ago). He's located in the Roleystone area, will make a great protector of your hens, and you can cross him with many different breeds to get some great backyard layers. NOT for the pot. Thanks if you can help. :)

02.01.2022 Have decided to downsize slightly....... So we have plenty if breeding groups available. Please message for details, we are entirely flexible so can make up hens and roosters to order. Photos are suggestions, but we can swap depending on wants/needs. Coronation Sussex hens are 1-3 years old, roosters are about 10 months old. Happy to make up quads (3 hens and a rooster) and trios (2hens and a rooster) or what ever combination you might like. Blue laced red and splash laced re...ds - can do for example, 4 splash laced red hens and a black laced red rooster, so all progeny are blue laced red. Or a mix. Splash laced gold, don't have a spare rooster, so have 3 splash laced gold hens, 1-2 years old. Have a beautiful silver laced wyandotte rooster, just reaching maturity, will take a photo tomorrow, message if interested. Various other oddments. :) Oh, and plenty of pullets in most colours. Chicken run on Sunday, Midland at 11-12, Joondalup at 1pm. Or pick up from New Norcia anytime. See more

02.01.2022 Hi Everyone, just a quick update/clarification; whilst we at Hewlett's Happy Hens love our chooks, they are not as important as our health or yours. We consider the sale of chickens to be non-essential and will not be selling pullets, chicks or eggs during this crisis. We are staying home, please do the same.

02.01.2022 It's moulting season! Don't panic if your chooks look like Madame Splash here, its perfectly normal for this time of year. In order to get through the cold winter months, instead of putting energy into producing eggs, they grow a new batch of feathers and a layer of fat. Please remember a chickens' feathers are their most precious asset, and they only get one set per year, you don't want to let beautiful new feathers be ruined by lice, mites and other pests. Now is a good time to inspect and treat for both external and internal parasites.

01.01.2022 EGG POSTING SEASON HAS BEGUN Our new post packs for fertile eggs were trialled last week with great success. Two dozen went to the southwest and two dozen went to NSW, all arrived in good order, no breakages. We are happy to post eggs to those who live in remote areas who are unable to access chickens any other way, but would prefer those who live closer to purchase eggs or day old chicks in person. There is always a risk posted eggs will be exposed to heat or cold, or shake...n. To get eggs to customers as fast as possible, all posting will be done on Mondays, express post. All eggs will be $60 per dozen, plus $25 postage for either 1 or 2 dozen. We have the following available tomorrow: Blue laced red wyandotte Splash laced gold wyandotte Silver laced and blue laced silver wyandotte. We will continue posting until the weather gets too hot. :)

01.01.2022 Good morning. We have just had a cancellation on a Coronation Sussex breeding group. It consists of 2 Coronation Sussex hens and one Light Sussex Hen, and a beautiful big Coronation Sussex Rooster. They are already in boxes in the car ready to go, so if you would like them, and can meet us at Bunnings Midland at 11-12 or Bunnings Joondalup at 1pm, please message us ASAP. Thanks :) PS, they have had a wash since we took the photo and look so much nicer! $40 each or make an offer.

01.01.2022 We don't usually like to brag, but.......well done Kobie! :)
